Regarding Geoff turning SGF into E3 if he were to acquire it, Greg makes the easiest point: if Kinda Funny could acquire IGN, they wouldn't then become IGN just because of the brand recognition. Geoff is a determined individual. If he could/were to acquire E3, I guarantee you he would have the same principle, and just double down on SGF, now with no direct competition.

Every time I hear someone in the industry say something like, "does E3 really matter? Do you really care?" I scream in my head, Yes! E3, for a normal person like me, is always the one event I look forward to in the summer. It usually falls close to my birthday, but aside from that its always, in my head, the place where the Big 3 compete to show who has the best upcoming year or so. I care about E3, and seeing the industry care less about it makes me really sad.

Follow-up: waiting two hours to play a 10-minute demo...Yes. It may sound like a waste of time for someone who gets early access to games, most games free, knows developers, etc. But, again for someone like me, I would love to wait in line to get access to something that nobody outside of E3 is going to access. I would love to see a backstage demo of Zelda, or play 10 minutes of Halo:Infinite (before it came out, I mean), etc. That aura and exclusivity is what most people think about and dream about with E3. I think the industry itself takes that for granted.

SGF killed the hype for E3 without adding any of its own. Instead of all the reveals happening during one exciting week, there's 3-4 months of mediocre showcases.

E3 will basically become a smaller event, kinda like a Pax. Will be interesting to see if Ubisoft stay quiet after all their issues. Maybe a small AC event closer to winter

They are putting a ton of faith in Geoff fest this year. Last year was essentially Sonic, Street Fighter 6 and a bunch of smaller titles I don't remember any of the big 3 actively participating in it? And as far as announcements from Geoffs showcase it's a ton of small indies and random revivals from THQ

Due to how many games have been delayed from the pandemic interrupting development I'm no longer expecting a lot of game announcements for a long period of time. They'll trickle out new game announcements to satisfy investors but all their focus will be on the games that are coming out in the immediate future not years ahead.

I miss E3 so much. These digital only directs are so lame. The fan fair of E3 can actually get me hyped for a game that I otherwise wouldn’t be. Nowadays I just skip the presentations and read the headlines afterwards

I think the games should speak for themselves. The fanfare and pageantry is unnecessary. The individual presentations are usually well made and get to the point faster. At least the ones that I have seen.

@@R17759 at the end of the day it’s the games that matter, yeah. But there’s just something about E3 that these small directs can’t recapture. I use to think of E3 as a holiday. Especially as a kid when all the major press conferences happened on the same day. I’d call out of school and spend the entire day watching the conferences and coverage. It felt like an event. Like the whole gaming world was tuned in. E3 felt important. These events now don’t. Yeah a lot of it is unnecessary pageantry. But damnit I love it haha Sony’s 2016 E3 presentation was an All-Timer and I’ve never seen anything from a direct style presentation that has gotten me even half as excited as that conference.

E3 seems to be on it's last legs, has been for a while. But nothing will replicate or ever live up to the sheer hype that E3-Past provided. No individual Playstation, Xbox or Nintendo showcase, even if they're better viewing. Certainly not TGA or SGF, which are fine enough events, but ultimately a somewhat shallow "replacement". That E3 week was just special, especially when everyone was involved. A lot of the conferences were crap, let's face it, but it was a whole week to get excited, have a massive focus on the industry and the hobby we love.

I wonder if Nintendos game production has slowed or if it just feels that way. Pointing to rereleasing most/all of the Wii U games on switch and thinking about the releases make me think it has slowed. However, I also have a bad habit of ignoring games that don't drive my own interest, as well as not having a great understanding of Nintendo's past productivity. I say this attempting to ignore the role Covid has played. Obviously all video game production was impacted by covid. I just wonder if this era's Nintendo makes less games than the past era's.

It's not the show I stopped caring about, it's the games the show was showing that I stopped caring about. After having the industry turn more servicey, populated by huge budget titles that release broken and unfinished and all the other BS that comes with it, now I'm like fuck it, what's going on with the lower budget games that are awesome and come out complete. I just saw Armored Core 6 announced...not at E3. That's rad.

Sony has lost a lot of its personality since Jim Ryan took over. It's hard to picture an in person showcase without the likes of Tretton, Shu or Adam Boyes and company. Ryan just doesn't seem like a gamer. Granted, he's there to run a business, but it was better when the company leads had a more personal connection to the gaming audience.

I think this will probably be the last E3 worth discussing and it doesn't come back next year. While Summer Games Fest is still no the big big thing, it's clear a lot of people are looking at it and considering going there especially indies or smaller games. With the big 3, they can all just do their own showcases at this point and still grab enough eyes and ears. Also Keighly will never get E3 because I'd argue its brand name is slowly losing relevance because of the last few years. I think he'd rather try to make SGF his own thing, people were able to go to SGF and play a lot of the games that were shown at the event so I think it's inevitable.

Game awards are nowhere near as big as summer announcements. The announcements we get at the awards are generally 'meh', so there's no comparison unless you actually care more about award winners than announcements (and I'd wager the majority of gamers are more into the announcements)

Disappointed this wasn't actual predictions episode, she we've been hearing this same conversation since the pandemic started and I'm tired of it. 99.99% of perigee don't go to e3 or care about it, imo. It's just the conferences and directs that coincide with e3 that people care about.
