Years ago my uncle had a mustang turn on blue lights to pull him over. He thought that was a bit strange and kept driving while he called 911. Come to find out it was an unmarked car and legit, he pulled over when dispatch told him it was real. The officer came up to the window and was super cool about the scenario (clearly dispatch told him why the truck wasn't pulling over.).

I'm glad you clarified that its legal to call 999 on a mobile Ben. About three months after it became illegal to use a mobile at the wheel, I was being chased down the A30 in Cornwall by a man as close as he could get. It didn't matter which lane I was in, he was like glue so being a girl on my own I called the police. The male operator just kept saying are you driving right now, & when I said yes, he shouted, that's illegal, pull over then ring & hung up on me.

My brother actually got pulled over by a big Audi with lights in Manchester, the blokes in the car were by the looks of it trying to nick people's cars, and he called up the Manchester police afterwards, and they had obviously not pulled his car and they noted that someone was impersonating the police, so it would be interesting to see whether anything came of that...

I remember being on remand about 30 years ago. I got to know 2 asian lads. I asked them what they were in for and they said car theft and impersonating a police officer. Turns out, they dragged an old couple out their car and said they were police and that it was an emergency and they needed the car 🤦‍♀ No idea how long they got sentenced to, but I hope it was a long time.

To answer your question as to why people would impersonate an officer, from things I have heard in the past, it is, in some cases, to harm unsuspecting women. Particularly younger women, teenagers who just got their license, who wouldn’t think the man saying he’s a traffic cop is dressed or acting weird, or to call dispatch themselves to make sure this guy is who he says he is when a red flag is raised. I will say that I’m unsure how common an occurrence it is, but I have heard stories of women becoming victims of these fake cops. In cases like Dewitt, however, it appears to be a power trip.

I believe that the bike was equipped with purple lights. But i mean, here in the Netherlands, funeral processions have a certain status on the road in the sense that you cannot cross or interrupt one except if they have a red light or you are driving on a priority road or roundabout out of respect for the deceased. But we arent going to escort them with blue lights. The person is dead anyway. Although, last year, one of our motorcycle officers was killed in the line of duty. And his procession was escorted with blue lights. Very impressive to see.

DeWit is in prison now. As well as being a sex offender and convicted felon and a police impersonator, he is also a fake SEAL and stolen valour offender. He owned a Funeral escort company, how he managed to buy so many look alike police cars for that is a mystery. Funeral escorts can't use sirens or red/blue lights, can't speed, or otherwise ignore traffic regs. This is the law that regulates them in Florida. (a) All non-law enforcement funeral escort vehicles and funeral lead vehicles shall be equipped with at least one lighted circulation lamp exhibiting an amber or purple light or lens visible under normal atmospheric conditions for a distance of 500 feet from the front of the vehicle. Flashing amber or purple lights may be used only when such vehicles are used in a funeral procession.

I used to see a man, on a cräppy old, low cc motorbike which he’d attempted to make look like a police motorbike. He’d then dressed up (very badly) as a police officer. This was just after the on the spot fines had been introduced and you could pay the officer with cash. Thankfully that was soon changed to where you had to go to a local magistrate’s court and pay by cheque or card. I’d seen him a couple of times stopping drivers and people actually handing over money! I reported him to my local police station and the next time I saw him was in the local newspaper, where he’d appeared in the Crown Court for impersonating a police officer, obtaining money by deception, and the usual road traffic offences - no tax, no insurance, no MoT. If I remember correctly, he got something like three years, a very large fine and his (💩) motorbike was seized and crushed.

😂right off the bat it’s the king of police impersonators. No matter how many times Dewitt was told not to do what he was doing, no matter how many times he was charged, and no matter how many times he went to jail, he KEPT IMPERSONATING IMMEDIATELY AFTER. There seriously is some sort of learning disability with that guy. And in addition to all the police gear he’s wearing, one video shows his duty belt has a fake hand gun in a holster. Clearly a visual clue to citizens that he’s supposed to have some sort of authority when all he is supposed to do is guide a funeral procession to the cemetery. Also, no where in the US are funeral processions, escorted or not, allowed to run red lights (EXCEPT for an actual police or firefighters funeral procession but they are authorized to direct and stop traffic)

I think the biggest reason people impersonate police officers is so they can go on a power trip against women and people unable or unwilling to defend themselves like bad police officers, without the effort of actually going to a police academy. They hear bad police officers getting away with horrible disgraceful things and they want to be able to do that too. Then a less dangerous minority just want to abuse certain authority like as you said, getting past traffic. Still for a selfish reason, but not an outright malicious one. And a much smaller minority would be people that want to help but could not become a police officer for real who want to live out the fantasy sometimes and delusional people that can't tell fantasy from reality who think they actually are police. Which can be relatively harmless if they stick to talking to lonely old ladies and helping get cats out of trees but becomes very risky if they try to pull people over or stop robberies or the like. I could see some people doing to just to feel like they can help people, but therapy and volunteering would probably be a better and safer option.

To any potential police impersonators - it's dangerous enough on Britain's roads pulling someone over - but if you're over there in the US it's even more so; real police officers don't take traffic stops lightly because many have been seriously hurt doing so and they have the ability to call for assistance. You don't, so don't be an idiot - a Darwin Award has no monetary value. Excellent video as always Mr Pearson, Sir 🙂and I hope you don't mind if I share the heck out of it 😀

As a former LEO, I never understood why anyone would want to impersonate a police officer. That first guy, he was just a jerk, no department would ever want someone with that attitude on their department. You can't just go and yell at drivers, especially when their vehicle is in motion. Not only did he endanger his own life by confronting people who may or may not be armed, he also was endangering the lives of other motorists on the road that day. Maybe these bimbos just think that the badge gives them a right to bully others, but they couldn't be more wrong. The badge is a symbol of an oath that all officers must take, it's something that must never be abused. Sure there are some bad cops out there, I knew a few, but generally they don't last very long at their departments. There's a common misconception that officers give "professional courtesy" to other officers when they break that law, in my experience using a badge to get out of taking responsibility for an offense is strongly frowned upon. Sure it happens sometimes for minor traffic offenses, but it usually comes with a very stern lecture from the officer who is handling the situation and even a stronger lecture from the offending officer's supervisor. Either way, impersonating a police officer is one of the dumbest things a person can do, not only do they look stupid, but they are interacting with someone who they know nothing about. At least when a real officer conducts a traffic stop, they have the ability to check the information on the driver before they even go up to the window of the vehicle; I would hate to interact blindly with someone who has active warrants and a history of violent crime, that could be a death sentence.

The US is so large, that laws have to vary by state. It was intended that each state operates almost entirely independently, and that one can live in a state which shares their values. By design, it would have kept the federal government small, and tremendously aided our economy, as a system of checks and balances isn't exactly financially efficient. But, we've drifted away from that. Every generation has sold out the next for short-term benefits. 99% or more of what the US Federal Government is involved in, is not power appointed to it by the constitution, and thus, are all states issues. Essentially, we're trying to fix a Ford f150 by using a Toyota camry owners manual.

I mean, the second amendment goes completely against that notion, but ok. Did you not know that before 1903 you had to consent to being drafted before you were legally allowed to be a militia member? It only changed when these "freedom fighters" deserted and refused to show up that they changed it.
@lagon7830
@lagon7830 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanthompson3737 Actually, the second amendment is an individual right. Infact, Madison responded to a letter, stating a guy could own the most advanced weaponry at the time, a cannon, field artillery. While the federal government did rely on a militia force early on, by 1789 the US congress passed an act to create a standing military, rendering the federal government's power to call forth a militia, virtually obsolete. We are truly seeing how weak good times have made us, it's made us submissive, eager to do whatever the federal government tells us, at any time, whether they've the power to do it or not.

@@lagon7830 So you DIDNT read what I wrote? You just IMAGINED me saying "guns bad" and went with it, right? I said that the pre-requisite to owning guns was submitting yourself to military service at ANY time as demanded by the state or federal government... it had NOTHING to do with the kind of guns allowed. Beyond that, the militias act of 1903 officially created the states national guard as a trained military force... are you saying the national guard doesn't get called on by the federal government? This doesn't even mention that the ENTIRE PURPOSE of the "first second amendment" was to ensure extensive protection during times of peace since its IMPOSSIBLE to expect the federal government to be able to afford to upkeep a standing army.... this is why YOU pay 1/6th of your budget on the military, and why war is a VITAL part of your economy... the standing army you have now ISNT economical, as the founding fathers predicted all those years ago. Then, the OFFICIAL second amendment was just a rebalancing of the one in the articles of confederation. It was meant to shift the absolute power from the federal government to the shared power with states. This allowed them to not only have a massive amount of national protection, but to also have the ability to direct these forces to protect the state from domestic threats from their own federal government. As the anti-federalistis and founding fathers said, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for the federal government to build and upkeep any worthy army against the national guardsmen. Point is, that BEFORE 1903, "militia' meant you were part of a states national guard, with the OBLIGATION to serve in battle when called upon.. now you guys just want all the benefits without ANY of the obligations.
