Like your channel very much. As a builder with a wasted economics degree, I disagree somewhat that if private housebuilders and developers build more homes, that will lead to better affordability. It just won't. Good quality new 'council' housing, including repurposing existing commercial spaces for this use, is the only way to address the problems we have. It's the nature of the housing, not the numbers that are the fundamental issue imo

Not a single new school, shop, drs. It's mad. Nothing wrong with building new homes, but who is planning this stuff!? This spouting of the Hippocratic oath really gets my goat. Has anyone actually read it? If so, they’d know that it includes the promise not to charge for medical education, yet new doctors graduate with £100k in student debt! It also includes the commitment to adopt one’s lecturer as a father figure, the promise not to provide abortions, and prayers to ancient gods . Most medical schools in the UK haven’t required graduates to take this oath for years. It doesn’t contain the words “first, do no harm”; the only reference to harm is the promise not to actively harm a patient, linking to the next sentence about not poisoning them. Not does this oath contain a promise that we must continue to work for crap pay in a failing health service! It is utterly irrelevant in this industrial dispute. “I swear by Apollo the physician, and Asclepius, and Hygieia and Panacea and all the gods and goddesses as my witnesses, that, according to my ability and judgement, I will keep this Oath and this contract: To hold him who taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents, to be a partner in life with him, and to fulfill his needs when required; to look upon his offspring as equals to my own siblings, and to teach them this art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or contract; and that by the set rules, lectures, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to students bound by this contract and having sworn this Oath to the law of medicine, but to no others. I will use those dietary regimens which will benefit my patients according to my greatest ability and judgement, and I will do no harm or injustice to them. I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion. In purity and according to divine law will I carry out my life and my art. I will not use the knife, even upon those suffering from stones, but I will leave this to those who are trained in this craft. Into whatever homes I go, I will enter them for the benefit of the sick, avoiding any voluntary act of impropriety or corruption, including the seduction of women or men, whether they are free men or slaves. Whatever I see or hear in the lives of my patients, whether in connection with my professional practice or not, which ought not to be spoken of outside, I will keep secret, as considering all such things to be private. So long as I maintain this Oath faithfully and without corruption, may it be granted to me to partake of life fully and the practice of my art, gaining the respect of all men for all time. However, should I transgress this Oath and violate it, may the opposite be my fate.” www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/greek/greek_oath.html

The ones putting in all the planning applications are large companies of house builders who have the knowledge and the resources to finance their building plots. However, they are building three or more bedroom houses that make them the most profit. Not flats and one-bedroomed homes that are so badly needed. Leasehold laws are a joke, there is less demand to own flats. We need to give the councils money, just as was done in the 1950s, to build cheap affordable housing to rent or buy

Love these kind of videos, it's always interesting to hear your guys thoughts about the goings-on in politics. However, I think NIMBYISM is often used as a very sweeping statement, but not necessarily understood from the perspective of people living in these areas. I've found that it's often born out of frustrations with poor planning, the stupidity of local councils and greedy councils/developers. The village I'm from was battling against planning permission for 60-100 houses to be built. Of those 60-100 houses only 4-5 were pegged as being 'affordable housing' the rest were £300,000+. It's currently a village of about 300 people, a fair few of which are actually 2nd home owning Londoners, so it would almost double in size if such a site went ahead. It's not in an area with many jobs, resources, or much infrastructure. Public transport is non-existent, schools and doctors are stretched pretty thin, local supermarket is a 15 minute drive away and is a Co-Op slightly bigger than a sainsbury's local. It just fundamentally makes no sense to build there when the local eco-system can barely cope with the number of people living there already. Add to that, the fact that the local market towns have already doubled in size with the amount houses being built, a large number of which are just sat empty. I believe the parish council also went back to the developers and said that there was a case to be made for in-fill along the boundary of the site and existing houses (about 10 houses with 3-4 being 'affordable') and suddenly the developers were no longer very interested. Locally at least it also tends to be a cross-party issue, though these areas do tend to be pretty blue in the overall political spectrum.

The biggest damage to the SNP imo was the leadership election. The fact that Kate Forbes almost got in with some of her views which are stuck in the 1800s makes me question the party at large. The recent 600k scandal is bad but honestly it's pocket change in the political world to put into context that's equivalent to a few years expenses for a lot of individual Westminster MPs (not just Tories btw) which comes straight from the taxpayer. Let's not forget to mention the billions wasted on dodgy PPE contracts too. That being said at the next GE while I'm more more indifferent to SNP after the leadership election I'll still be voting SNP mainly because Stephen is my local constituency MP and I think he does a good job.

I mean staffing issues may not be the junior doctors problem but the BMA does hold some responsibility here. In 2008 they voted to cap student numbers and stop new medical schools. Whilst I agree we do need to pay doctors more, and it is good that since COVID they have argued against a cap, it would also help to have trained more of them over the last 15 years especially as it takes so long to get people through the system.

As someone who's been fighting local developers (for 8 years now) who keep insisting they build on a field that floods, without the support of the local water company who say they can't guarantee anything, it's not NIMBYism to demand that planning actual consider DECENT building sites for local housing rather than the local farmer who's willing to sell the developer land on the cheap because it's trash. There were like 10 other sites in the area that were more suitable but because this farmer had "friends" in the right places etc this was the only plot they wanted basically, over all the objections. Thankfully the committe did note the concerns we raised about the field being unsuitable for housing (it floods and we documented this over several years and I have a background in Earth Science so took apart their "experts" report on how the land was "fine"), and the developer refuses to put any flood mitigation plans into writing on their plans (due to costs I imagine) so the planning commitee keeps throwing it out because they aren't doing it. This was also backed up by the local Flooding agency with the county council who were concerned about the area. Remember if they don't put anything in writing the developer can do whatever they want still, they can lie through their teeth in the planning meeting, as long as it's not in writing they have no commitment to keep to their word, which is what the planning pinned them on. I'm sure they'll try again in a few years, and we'll be there to remind planning of the reasons the field is still not suitable for housing. Many will say we're just being NIMBY's but we want houses in the village, just the selected site is unsuitable for development, it's barely able to produce any crops (which is why the farmer had it fallow for many years but since our complaints has begun cropping it to prove its a working field - we applied for a village green grant). They are now building on one of the other more suitable sites in the village at least. Still it's ridiculous that local planning doesn't have a better review process for sites other than just "trusting" the land owner in many cases. There's no planned development any more, which is what is needed here, we need citiies supported by planned Satellite villages, with public transport links being available, shops, schools, and other facilities being built. We need someone who actually has ideas for these kinds of plans. How to create new hubs for communities. Not just expect them to magically appear.

I have observed a few things, we live in a three bed semi and the cheapest of the new builds cost about twice what our house is worth so no help to people at the bottom of the "ladder". There have been no new schools, shops or medical facilities (our doctors practice is being knocked down to build new houses, we are promised relocation) and probably not connected is the bus service is less frequent or perhaps it is connected I would guess people who can afford expensive houses aren't the target users for buses. I suspect the net result is that the builders get richer and few homeless people will get a nice new house.

We should be building shards everywhere! 22nd century, environmentally conscious, affordable housing matching the needs of the towns and cities that need them. We're decades upon decades behind due to capitalism.

The construction materials prices have shot up since brexit, then again covid etc, we get most of our wood and materials from abroad and extra time stuck in customs at ferry terminals, import tax, fuel prices have all pushed up prices. It's OK building houses but no one can afford them especially young first time buyers.

Easy way to build new homes and please the NIMBYers. There are nearly 3000 golf courses in the UK. In a study recently carried out in 2021 it stated that there was 5.2 million people who play golf. That out of a 67.1 million population (as of 2022 so might be higher now). A simple solution is take half of those golf course and use the land that they occupy to build houses, on shore wind turbine/solar farms, whatever is left over leave to be rewilded.

I normally enjoy your channel and the reactions from your team, but in this case, I’d like to encourage you to do better next time… There are plenty of people (some of them in the comments here) who will rely on the short clips of PMQ you chose to show, rather than watch the full thing themselves. They will have missed Starmer’s come back to Rishi Sunak, where starmer completely obliterated Sunak by highlighting Teresa May’s own positive assessment of his performance as dpp. You know about this, because you show the exchange in another video! Keir Starmer spent his questions hammering the government on the deterioration of living conditions in Britain under the Tories (they broke the nhs, broke education, broke social care, broke the justice system), notably highlighting the very issues (lower prosecution rate under the Tories and increased insecurity) that Oli himself was characterising as abhorrent a couple of videos ago. Yet Oli describes him as one of two toddlers fighting over a pacifier? Dude, it’s ok that Starmer isn’t your ideal candidate (he isn’t mine either), but you’re doing everybody a disservice by putting him in the same bag as Sunak. Have some perspective.

No PMQs It’s more like watching two parents arguing what’s best for their child, oblivious to the fact that the child walked into the road and is about to be hit by on coming traffic

Seems like there's a perfect spot in between the tubelights to put the video overlay while you react to it. Would stop Ollie being covered up during the reaction, and would balance the shot better.

Firstly we need to bring back the conversation to why is there a housing crisis? I'm 56 years old never own a home grew up in Southampton in a council house my parents brought in 1981 for 9k they sold it for 164k 6 years later after their divorce My question is two fold what was the population of the UK in 1981 & now? Because I'm confused I seen more housing built in this time then I can easily count in my area but at a pure estimate I say we are looking at 200k extra housing within an 8 mile radius. Today I rate a 1 bed flat for 600 pcm. To afford this I work two jobs working 60 hours a week. I say what the .... is happening? Bare in mind my parents had excess to a council at age 23 mother & 26 father

It's always been the case but right back to Cameron's "Call me Dave" and hugging hoodies you could tell we were in for a special type of screwing.

Your point about - how do the country gain more housing, if it is not in nimby out of town areas : Thatcher sold off the Council stock. Since then population has increased massively. The Councils` are weaker due to Central Government. The housebuilders` prefer to build on greener sites - it is cheaper hence more profit. The easy answer is many building underused now such as offices need to be converted into housing. Secondly, the population has to reduce.

I don't trust MPs, probably never will, but how can anyone expect the country to grow and be governed effectively when they insist on insulting each other most of the time? On the housing point, if I was to pledge a commitment at work and didn't fulfil it, I doubt I would a have a job to return to. Yet, time and time again, MPs across both major parties consistently let the public down. There has to be a better way

I know it's a serious issue and I feel bad for laughing, but "your mum can't convict rapes" might be the best line I've heard so far this year.

You don't solve the manufactured housing crisis building more houses, you solve it by reintroducing rent control and regulating holiday let's. We may need some more houses in certain areas, of course, but most of this is due to buy to let is so lucrative.

They do the insults because that’s what’s expected of them. Sound bites which show a point scored. Complaining about it won’t change it. We have to demand change of this partisan nonsense.

PMQs - lie as much as you want. The only rule - don't call each other liars. There are no proper rules of exchange so it's a completely undisciplined charade.

On the rape conviction manipulation, why on earth is Starmer not absolutely nailing that? He just constantly fails to put the ball in the back of the net.

How can you 'react' to a zoo with the Tory backbenches braying like animals simply to drown Starmer out, whilst Rishi delivered a new nickname for Starmer without answering a single question. If you conducted yourself like this in any other job - let alone a profession - you'd be out of a job. What an embarrassing spectacle. British politics, like every other aspect of this country, is a basket case.
