The name of the doctor and university killed me loooooooool for people who didn't get it: the doctor's name 'Μιαουγδαληνή Παπαδοπούλου' comes from two common Greek names. 'Μιαουγδαληνή' (Miaougdalini) comes from 'Μαγδαληνή' (Magdalini), which is a common female name is Greek. 'Παπαδοπούλου' is the female version of 'Παπαδόπουλος' ,which is the most common Greek surname (according to Wikipedia) means 'son/daughter of a priest'. the name of the university 'Αιλουροφιλία' transcribes to 'Ailourophilia', which is an alternative spell for 'Ailurophilia', describing a person who LOVE cats. 'Μιαουκεδονία' (Miaoukedonia) comes from 'Μακεδονία' (Macedonia).

@@PlethonGemistos hey, what does that "-πουλο" at the end of Greek names mean?
@PlethonGemistos3 жыл бұрын
@@PauloVictor-vu2bt it means "son of". It's not Greek, it's Latin. Like the French poulet. Bird. It's like the English (or Swedish) son, as in Johnson. The female version of a surname ends in poulou because it's in genitive. Papadopoulos (m) - Papadopoulou (f). But why Latin? Because these endings were used in the Eastern Roman Empire first (people call it Byzantium, but that's wrong, there's never been a Byzantine empire, only Roman). So you got, e.g. Argyropoulos (who was a teacher of Leonardo da Vinci) and Theotokopoulos (the famous El Greco), and Konstantopoulos (the not famous me, an all Latin name, Konstant coming from Constantine the infamous guy from Eboracum/York).... I almost got angry before I realised its aprils fools day and its supposed to be ridiculous :D Btw, like half of the words for cat in languages around the world is actually derived from the sound cat makes: in egyptian it was something like "miaw", in current chinese it is "mao" and in old chinese that would be something like "mrew", the Japanese "neko" is probably derived from "nya" (the cat sound) and "koma" (old word meaning "foal" or a tetrapod in general), okinawan "mayaa" and "myanka" is of a similar origin. Slovak "mačka" is also one of these meow words. There is probably much more of this but this is what I remember from the top of my head.
@polyMATHY_Luke3 жыл бұрын
That's a great point! I totally see nya > nyako (meow-child) > neko
@TheoEvian3 жыл бұрын
@@polyMATHY_Luke sadly not, I checked classical japanese dictionary and it had "nekoma->neko" in it. Korean tho belongs to the other big group of cat names and that is the "k" names, since it is koyangi 고양이. This probably also has a nice explanation but I don't remember it anymore :D
@TheoEvian3 жыл бұрын
@@cerberaodollam nope, it is the other way around. You know, Hungarian is a strongly slavicised language, the same with the rumanian so if you see a hungarian/slavic lookalike it was borrowed from a slavic language (for example almost all agricultural vocabulary which is understandable considering the nomadic history of early Maygars) (same goes with rumanian where the slavic vocabulary is much more dispersed). To provide more arguments: the -ka ending is a slavic feminine diminutive ending, very distinctive. The masculine version of both words would be "mač" and "kot" (kot>kočka, mač>mačka, kot is used in some slavic dialects, i myself would call a male cat a "kocour", mač is the onomatopoeic part describing the sound that cat is supposed to make). Thus clearly not of hungarian origin because hungarian, if I am not mistaken, has nothing like this, it doesn't even have gramatical gender, if I am not mistaken.
@TheoEvian3 жыл бұрын
@@cerberaodollam I did some more research and it turns out all southern slavic languages have "mačka", some other languages have it too, the northern limit of the word is in Slovak (west slavic) and the eastern is Rusyn (east slavic), which kinda shows you the wavelike development of many slavic features - originally you had a "kočka" or "kot" and then in the south before the arrival of Hungarians an onomatopoeic word for the cat developed (a very similar thing has happened fairly recently in Czech where you also can call a cat "číča" which is the sound you make when you CALL a cat to you, like pussy (from pspsps) in English, but this word is considered substandard) and spread untill it hit the limit of the wave influence where the spread stop. Or maybe it was the other way around I dont know. Here is the wiktionary reference: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/maca Anyway, Hungarian has it from slavs, sorry to burst your bubble.
@MarkRosa3 жыл бұрын
@polýMATHY and @Marcel Koniček - I had never heard of that word "nekoma" before, but the -ma suffix *could* be related to the same one on Taketomi island (of Okinawa) which means "cute little ~" (so a girl named Kuya would be called Kuyama; on mainland Japan she would be Kuya-chan). And Japanese people still have the slangy word "nyanko" for a cat today; in that word the "ko" is certainly the one that means "child" or "little ~". Incidentally, on Yonaguni island a cat is a "mayu", which is firmly in the "meow" family. I think the Okinawan word "mayaa" is this word plus the common suffix "-aa" which is attached to persons or living things, but that could be a coincidence.

@@polyMATHY_Luke I don't speak a ton of latin, but I am a theology major (at the small Catholic College where Dr. Llewellyn teaches Latin, although she is actually my Italian teacher) and my thesis is on human suffering and the problem of evil. And every time I see the words "Felix culpa" (which is a theodicy-- an explanation for the existence of evil in a world with an all-powerful and all-benevolent God) I know what it REALLY means, but my first thought is always, "it's the cat's fault" 😂 to be fair, in my house, most things are the fault of at least one of the cats.
