Thats a GREAT point! "Buy the lower costing item first, then if you use it a whole lot, THEN REPLACE it with the higher priced model." Perfect way to put it, and can be used in many factors of shopping! Someone on youtube said, "If you buy cheap, you buy twice," which is true, just make sure it is something worth buying, twice. ;) Thanks for your help, here, dear!

I appreciate your videos because you do a good job of addressing one topic in a few minutes, clearly and concisely. I also appreciate your sense of humor. Those black streaks happen to me, too, and now I understand what is causing them... I have a question about how you chose Premo over Fimo. I've used both and cannot choose between them. I'd appreciate your guidance. Thanks!
@PolymerClayTutor10 жыл бұрын
Hi Marianne Vakiener Thank you so much for your comment! I really appreciate hearing that from you! As far as why I chose Premo over Fimo, is basically because of the colors. Premo is based on the artist pigment palette, which makes color mixing predictable and easy for me, since I have experience mixing paints and it translates quite nicely. I also love the strength and consistency of Premo which can be used for any technique that you could possibly want to do in polymer, which is another reason why I have chosen it. Fimo is a great brand though, so if it is more available to you, it is an excellent choice!

I use the Makins Ultimate Clay Machine. I have never seen it anywhere except at Hobby Lobby (and online at various places). It is a bit more expensive than most of the others, ~$50, but with HL's near-constant 40% off coupon, I didn't pay full price for it. I LOVE that thing. The Teflon(?) rollers are fantastic and it is very wide. I never have the streaking problem with that one.

I just read that if you use a paper towel and a little ammonia to clean the rollers it gets rid of those pesky black streaks completely. My pasta machine did it right out of the box too so it's just been sitting on a shelf because it was worthless to me but I'm going to take it down and try the ammonia to see if that works.

I've even wondered about applying a coating of varnish that is compatible with polymer clay on the rollers, since the streaks seem to happen where the scratches are in the rollers.
@PolymerClayTutor10 жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth Drake I did too and like I said to MegaPraiseHim .... I have tried PYMII, Renaissance Wax and oils to try and seal the rollers but each time I had to remove them because the clay would stick to the finish I used on the rollers.

Thanks for all your videos, it really helps! My pasta machine left black streaks from the beginning. I wasn't using it anymore. After seeing your video, I took the sides off. Dry polymer clay of all colors were stuck there. I'm not putting the sides back. I'll try cleaning the rolls with translucide polymer clay, but I can feel slight scratches. If I it doesn't work, in a last attempt, I'll try to sand it with a 3000 grits abrasive paper for automotive or so and let you know if it helped or destroyed my pasta machine!

@polymerclaytutor I have a new pasta machine & it's been leaving these marks on the outer edges, consistently, since the first use, despite cleaning my machine before & after each use with my scrap white clay.... I can't stop it happening... 😔 I am also having issues after using red clay where, despite cleaning the machine thoroughly, including turning it over & cleaning the clay residue that gets left underneath the rollers... Like I said above I clean it with scrap clay but I'm now using white & it's still leaving bits or the red clay.... Any tips for using the machine for light & dark colours other than having 2 machines.... {I could clean up my old machine & use it for dark colours... But I'd rather not have that faff...} Does running the white through inside laminating sheets work...? Anyway thank you as always for yours amazing, informative & helpful videos 😘

hello Cindy, i only have ceap pasta machine, my problem is not about black streaks or wrinkle, but it keep ripping my clay starting thickness no.1 and half of clay stick on the scrapper,, already check the scrappers all are tight (no space or hole between scraper and roller) what should i do? :'(
@ThisOLmaan4 жыл бұрын
i just bought an Amaco one but I'm not too convinced about the thickness on #9 some are vise versa means #1 is the thickest, least from one KZbinr mention, well i don't know if it supposed to be hard to turn, or it was a Returned item which I'm thinking it was, but $28 but plus tax you expect to be sold a new one not a retuned one from an unsatisfied customer, seems as if someone tried to drop or did prop oil to make it turn with ease there's a drop of something running down on the side, and it was some residue on the side so it wasn't new i will return it, i even opened it in store but did not want to prob too long to give the workers an idea i was steeling, but that happens regardless but since ur familiar with a lot of the brand's whats ur opinion? hope you can help TY

@Wingedshadowwolf10 жыл бұрын
I'm only here browsing, but a thought occurred to me. Could you sandwich the clay between two sheets of waxed or parchment paper? If they don't wrinkle up it might also work to protect the clay.
@PolymerClayTutor10 жыл бұрын
Hi Wingedshadowwolf although your suggestion does work, like you also mentioned, it tends to wrinkle which leaves marks in the clay and it is a pain to use. It is best if you can clean off the black with translucent clay before using instead or get a better machine.
@karenlal92428 жыл бұрын
that sounds like a neat idea for color mixing and conditioning where you don't need a perfectly flat smooth sheet, I'd pick wax paper because parchment can leech so you could do that if you really want to leech the clay, but its an extra step maybe I'll try it!

Mine is new and leaves marks all the time. Even as I'm working, I need to continuously run the 'spare' clay to clean it. And even when it's clean and I pass the slab I'm currently working on, sometimes the streaks come at the edges! Is there anything else I can do? I'm just starting and my budget is tight after getting initial materials :(

Thanks for another great video, Cindy! I'm having a problem where the clay doesn't come out flat when I roll it at a higher setting (5 or 6). It gets distorted and stretched out in the center of the clay. Have you had this problem? I work with Premo and have a brand new Makins pasta machine.
@cathyrezba31324 жыл бұрын
I have that same problem! Very frustrating.
@ginnyschmidt25245 жыл бұрын
I replaced one pasta machine because the space between the rollers was wider at one end than the other and, when I put it on thin setting, the clay just got torn and distorted. I've had my new pasta machine about a month now, and the same thing is happening. Is this because I bought inexpensive pasta machines, and does paying more mean that won't happen?
@PolymerClayTutor5 жыл бұрын
You Do get what you pay for, when it comes to pasta machines. Are you pushing hard clay into the rollers on just one of the sides? That can push the rollers out of alignment. But yes, that is a thing that happens more with the cheaper machines. You still need to be careful with the more expensive machines though. You should never force hard clay through any machine... it can cause damage to the rollers, the scrapers and the gears.

Hmmmm...I'll have to take and let a slab of clay from the cleaned machine and let it sit and see how it works. I have found that it works better with a well saturated paper town when I roll through, then hold it wadded up and run across the roller back and forth while I am turning the handle. Since I'm a hobbyist (for right now), the absence of black streaks lasted a long time. Since I've started working with clay more often, I have found that I need to do the treatment more often, sometimes each day. LOL Thanks for the feedback!

well my new pasta machine has been leaving black streaks, I had 2 test scraps of translucent and a very light yellow brown to test for the first time, and the black streaks aren't that annoying just use some rubbing alcohol to remove it, and it doesn't affect the color in my opinion it seems to evaporate or disappear even if you squash the clay, but I'd rather to be on the safe side, is just to do a full clean and use rubbing alcohol and qtip to remove it off the clay sheet. I love my little amaco for my beginner set up :) I'm on an extremely tight budget and have already spent 300 to start off with clay, but I've got lots and lots of items and tools, so maybe in the future I'll invest in the atlas, when I become more professional :)
