All we have to do is a simple posi rear end and gear upgrade in the 1968 Pontiac LeMans, that's it! Easy! We already have all the parts we could need sitting here and ready to go. After another expensive trip to our friends at Jegs we've got our posi-trac carrier, our install kit, and ring and pinion set. Unfortunately, as with absolutely everything with this car, that's not exactly the situation we're finding!
This Pontiac Project has been fighting us from moment one, from the first questionable purchase of the car until now essentially nothing has gone to plan. Initially there was some hope we could get it ready for the 2024 Pontiac Nationals, well that idea has gone completely out the window now it's just a question of can we get the car done without going COMPLETELY upside down on spending?

On a serious note- If it were me: I’ve learned that you’re often further ahead by spending more money up front and replacing everything with new rather than cobbling it back together. The repairs rarely last I’ve found. I obviously have no clue what the price points are and you’re so far upside down in this car 🤷‍♂️ I forget where Pole Barn Garage gets his rear ends from but he speaks highly of them and the prices he says are fair.

Wy are you laughing at that rear end ? If it never made it this far...you would be working on something not so good

If you learn how to build rear differentials completely you can save a ton of money and I have been doing this for years and years and just did a 70 Chevrolet Elcamino that this guy I know is going to 5.3 LS it with a turbo so he bought all new Yukon parts for it . The GM ones are pretty easy but I like the Ford 9 inch and the Chrysler 8&3/4 because they have the side adjusters to adjust the ring gear back & fourth to get the tooth pattern needed once the pinion depth is achieved. The Dana 60 needs a case spreader to get them apart and to assemble the ring gear .

I bought a SD-455 new in 74. It came with a 308 gear because of the air conditioning. I was told that it was necessary because a higher numerical gear would throw the belt. After the warranty was expired, I had the gear changed to a 3.73. I also added hooker headers and a B&M transpak and a Holeshot converter. When it was stock from the factory I ran 13.8 at National Trails on street nights. With the headers, converter and new gears, it would run 12.20's all night. So my experience is that for 1/4 mile racing, give it some gear.

I’m not surprised that Austin’s rear end is nasty looking and all wallered out. I bet it’s seen a lot of action back in its day. Definitely been abused in the past on Saturday nights trying to impress the ladies. But he’s in good hands 🙌

I agree with the previous comment. Find a good used 12 bolt posi with some decent gears and go have fun. They are easy to upgrade and the parts are relatively inexpensive.
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 24 күн бұрын
That's definitely an option the problem being a "good used 12 bolt posi" these days around here is about 60% the cost of a brand new entire assembly that we won't have any worries about at all. Decisions Decisions!

I'd think in grand scheme a 9" from whoever would be called upon. Gearset for track an hour later different gears set for road. Plus plenty of aftermarket support if things go sideways. Yes lots of dollars but in long run

Rule #1 never go on vacation when your in the middle of a project an your friend is still working on the project ...
@RustyZipper
@RustyZipper 26 күн бұрын
That rule is completely negated because a true car nut always has multiple projects going on at once. Furthermore, Typical vacations for car nuts are to attend car shows, road trip / sightsee (travel in a car), or a planned trip to buy car parts or another project. Rarely (never) would a vacation not include something car related.

Putting a Moser rear in this poor old Poncho would be akin to dropping a strawberry in a basket of turds. Never heard of a 350 HO. It would be one thing if you were doing all the labor on this, but buying parts and paying installation costs, you'll never break even.

Austin --- I got TWO Open BOP 8.2 rears here I can give you one rebuildable case for free. There is two problems. One, I am in SOUTH FL. and # 2 these BOTH are out of 1966 Cutlass Oldsmobile so the top, & bottom spring perch is a different pinion angle on 64 to 67 BOP so you got to use a pinion angle gauge & cut move & reweld the top & bottom perch for the different angle of the 68 to72 rear case to fit your 68 Lemans. I will call yall later.

If you’re going to really get into drag racing I would replace it. 8.2s are weak and won’t last behind a strong 455. You will be replacing it sooner than later if you continue the drag racing scene .. which is fun but does get expensive. If you’re going to occasionally race the car it will last for awhile as long as you don’t pound on it., The MT slicks you put on it will really accelerate the destruction of the 8.2 it would last a long time with street tires. As far as gear ratio 4.11 is way to much for your engines power-band. You will run out of rpm’s in the 1/4 mile., Your engine is all done at 5300 rpm. If you were making power at 6000-6500 rpm like a LS Chevy then a 4.11 is perfect . But you’re not. Pontiacs make there torque down low so a lower numerically ratio works better in the 1/4 mile. I would go any higher than a 3.55 with your engine. With 3.73s I think you would be turning more rpm at the end of the 1/4 mile and not making anymore power. There are calculators that can give you that information. I run a 1981 TA pace car with Pontiac 461 with stock 6X8 heads , turbo 350 auto (3000 stall) and 3.08 gears . She runs consistent 13.2 @ 102 mph The track I ran at was Atlanta Dragway at 1028 ft elevation . At Norwalk which is almost sea level I would be high 12s . I could go to a 3.23 or 3.42 and probably pick a few tenths maybe , but 3.08 are perfect for cruising around. Plus with the all that 461 Torque and 3000 stall she gets in the torque band very quick. I give up very little in a 0-60 even with 3.08s Got a buddy who ran 12.50s @106 mph with a 1970 GTO stock 455 with 64 heads ( headers) , turbo 400 trans and 3.08 gears with DRs . Really depends on what your future speed goals with the Lemans are to what your next steps are .
