August Is only their second cousin, so they shared great grandparents. Usually the royal family aren’t financially responsible for extended family members. Since Augusts’ father is dead he is the owner of the Årnäs estate and head of his family and although he has lands, art, and other valuables, he does not have liquid funds aka cash or cash equivalents. Also liquidating his assets and selling them off would be kind of embarrassing for him. Clearly image means a lot to August

Thank you for explaining this to me! It was annoying me throughout episodes 3 and 4 that I didn’t know😂 I wasn’t really sure how closely Wille and August were related so this clears a lot up for me!

@@TheCornerverse based on what I’ve read I’m pretty sure Augusts’ grandmother was a Royal Princess and the sister of the former King, the current Queen’s (in the show) father.

I really like that you appreciate the implications related to Wilhelm being a prince to his relationships. I feel like a lot of people don’t really think about how that impacts his upbringing, expectations, and options for his future. And now with what happens at the end of this ep, it’s an even bigger deal.
@TheCornerverse2 жыл бұрын
It’s funny because in my day-to-day life I think quite frequently how much I would hate to be a member of the royal family because of the lack of freedom in life (especially after the whole Harry/Meghan controversy came out) so I think that’s why I focused on that aspect of Wilhelm a lot in my reactions. I feel so awful for him because it’s absolutely not fair that he can’t be with the person he loves simply because of his title. I felt the show did an awesome job portraying the turmoil he went through with this hanging over his head. I think it plagued him more than the thought of being with a boy😅
@firegaze212 жыл бұрын
@@TheCornerverse I so agree. I never got the impression that he wasn’t sure of his own feelings or sexuality. He just has to deal with it through the lens of his title, position, expectations. I get the impression that if he wasn’t in the royal family, he’d be out and proud with Simon in a heartbeat.

Ivar Forsling (Erik) stated in an interview that Erik had a sense of Wilhelm might be attracted to guys not girls (or both?). Although it was not a topic before between he and Wilhelm, Erik used "someone" on purpose. This is such a well-thought, detailed show. Kudos to everyone involved. Cannot wait to watch S2.

Thank you for another great reaction! I think this show does such a beautiful job showing Wilhelm’s perspective. I feel as though, internally, he isn’t actually that confused by his feelings for Simon, he’s accepted he’s been interested. It really is just coming from external pressure that makes him doubt if it’s worth pursuing. Even when he says “I’m not like that,” I didn’t really take it as a “I’m not gay/bi” but more so “I’m not someone who can just casually start something new [especially with another man]” because for him, it unfortunately can’t be that simple. That’s just how I took it in though
@TheCornerverse2 жыл бұрын
I agree! I think the majority of his struggle is due to him knowing that he can’t simply be with a boy without causing so many issues, the fact he sought Simon out so many times I think he was quite aware of his feelings. However he was also aware of what would happen if they got together which is what stopped him for so long😓

They never say why August’s family is broke but I’ve watched the show a billion times and I think his relation to the royal family is through his father. And from parent day, we know the mom remarried after his father’s death and that they went bankrupt. So I think the mom and stepdad spent everything they could. And the only thing they have left is the estate that August inherited from his father. And that’s only there because August is the only that can sell it.
@nicoled822 жыл бұрын
In addition to what the others said about August’s money, when the parents arrived and his mom & step-dad pull up, Felice’s mom says something like, isn’t he the one who went bankrupt? So I’m assuming his step-dad went bankrupt and his mom’s funds are all tied up in that mess, which is why she can’t pay for his school either.
@kbsongy2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they're not broke at all. Like August's mom said, he could pay his tuition fees several times over by simply just selling some of the land or art he owns. He's rich af, he just doesn't want to let go of anything. I think it's mostly because the material stuff is all he has left of his dad, though status itself is important to him, too, so having to sell things probably embarrasses him as well.

Btw I know I'm in the minority with this but I really like August as a character xD Though I hate arrogance like that in real life

This show is truly something special. They chose specifically not to label Wille’s sexuality. So he is unlabeled, or fluid according to Edvin and Lisa Ambjörn. What is interesting about YR is that it’s not actually about internalized homophobia on the part of Wille liking a boy. It’s about the institution he lives in at no choice of his own and just knowing it’s not something that would be allowed.
@TheCornerverse2 жыл бұрын
That’s why I love it so much! It’s not a simple story of someone struggling with their sexuality (although don’t get me wrong, I love that plot line but we’ve seen it before) but about how his privilege punished him on a daily basis!

And he is now the crown prince. This is so much pressure on his life. "Love or duty" as they have written on the synopsis. I wonder if the writers will take the route of Wilhelm challenges the monarchy bringing love and duty together. Being an openly queer prince/king. What will royal court do about it? What will public say about it? Or will he chose his duty over his love, or other way around? That is such an interesting story. I think it deserves at least 3 seasons and I am up for it. And plus, Wilhelm is only 16 here! Thinking about how he is crushed under such big decisions coming onwards. Gosh! Poor boy. I strongly believe that he will fight for his love for Simon. And also, he will fight for his chance to change the monarchy, since he strongly dislikes some of monarchy's traditional roots.
@jciarra2 жыл бұрын
Also, I’m not sure on this so maybe someone knows better, but I think all of August’s family money is tied into assets, not cash. So things like investments, art, real estate. And he’s being too proud to let go of any of it or explain the situation to anyone, but that’s why he’s “broke.” From what we’ve seen, he hasn’t emotionally/mentally dealt with his dad’s suicide and the title/money/connections were from his dad‘s side, so I’m guessing he isn’t ready to let go of that.

From what Lisa Ambjorn has said, August's connection to the royal family is on his mother's side. She and Queen Kristina are first cousins. So August's maternal grandfather is the Queen's uncle. That makes August and the Queen first cousins once removed and August and Wilhelm second cousins. She didn't specify if August's grandfather was the Queen's uncle by blood or marriage. My guess is marriage considering the financial situation of his mother in conjunction with poor management by his father.
@jenniferbrinks65522 жыл бұрын
Oh, I must have missed that interview. I thought the connection was through his father because he talked about Årnas being in his father’s family since the 1700’s. Thanks for clarifying.

@@jenniferbrinks6552 yeah, when August said that at the parents luncheon it made sense as the nobility has always preferred to marry within it's class. August's mom's family has royal lineage and his father's family has a lineage of lessor nobility.

Dealing drugs is wrong from Simon part anyway. The gym proposition of spending the weekend together is cute right. It portrays so well of when you fall for someone you miss them where you are away from them. Yeah, we are tired to excuse August. Have you noticed Wille smiles are exclusively for Simon/about Simon? Except that, he never smiles. I wonder if he is unhappy in life in general? Ok his brother is nice with Wille, and the only one who seems to care about him. I love that Wille is enough comfortable to tell him he has met someone. But I don’t like that in each conversation they have, the Erik advice is to pretend to be someone else. Everybody seems to forget that part. He is all for the royal image. Why? I am not sure at all he would have supported any coming out. I know we are desperate to see Wille be supported, but... I think Wille character is so genuine, with him trying to comfort Felice. It is interesting how in August world, making Simon enjoy rich kid privilege is a way to pay him back. They begin to be physical with each other now, I am not comfortable with violence. I think you confuse “having a noble name” and “being rich”. It exists nobles with no money. However, August refuses to sell stuff for his school tuition, so neither for Simon. We don’t know why his is broke. Interesting your parallel between his power at school / him capable to afford school. But as with Simon, maybe he thinks what he does for school compensates money? I think Simon is like you, not trusting Sara with his secret love. But deciding to hide his life from her is not part of their “honesty pact”. It is not good for them. Good one, you saw the August staying the weekend issue right away, I didn’t. Wille back up plan proposition was cute right. Yeah, Wille lost the only close family member, sad. It won’t help his unhappiness and anxiety. I understand your hesitation to see the next episode. Seeing Wille grieving is painful. Well, gay king?! I loved “August doesn’t deserve to get what he wants” for Felice-August hook up. I feel ok about it. They just had both a very bad day, and decided to comfort each other. No harm done.
@TheCornerverse2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Wilhelm seems so miserable in any other setting besides when Simon is mentioned/he is with him. So adorable! I feel like Erik truly loved his brother so he probably would've supported him no matter what, because no-one else would. I guess we'll never know but he gave off the vibe that he would support Wille. It's as if August thinks status is everything - bringing the elitist viewpoint into play. Not everyone is like that and wants to be at a higher level, Simon just wanted what he was owed. I kinda just assumed that all members of royalty were automatically rich, but I'm not really interested in the royal family/history/politics so I don't know anything about it really haha.
