Apparently, he wrote the song about someone being rude to him and then changed it to a song about romance. Which would explain why the song is mainly focused on his annoyance towards the father and the girl just sounds like an afterthought.

My friends and I were talking about this, and we noticed that there's no indication that the girl actually likes this guy back. He never says anything about how he loves her or she loves him or how he can make her happy. He spends the whole time complaining about the rejection. Sounds a bit to me like the dad wasn't saying "you can't marry my daughter, you bum" and more "stay away from my daughter, she doesn't like you, you creepy asshole".

What has always frustrated me with this song was their decision to go for "rude" instead of "cruel". From the song writer's perspective, the father's refusal of his gesture is cruel, it's denying two people's happiness.

Okay, so the narrative in this song confused me too until I came to the revelation that we're all mishearing the lyric 'cause I need to know.' You see, the father isn't old fashion the way you're thinking. He's REALLY old fashion, as in there is a dowry involved which, I mean really, that's the only reason anyone would be that caught up in the father's opinion in the first place. No one ever actually needed that, it's just a tradition that stems from needing the father's approval in order to get the dowry which was often livestock. "Can I have your daughter, for the rest of my life? Say yes. Say yes. 'cause I need the goat." And that's why he keeps arguing the point with him. It's not like, 'well, I'm going to marry her anyway so that's that'. He's saying, 'Look, we're just going to get married anyway but we're really going to have a hard time of it if you don't lay down the damn goat.'

A word about UB40. Their first two albums are widely regarded as legit AF, and they are multi racial (Jamaican Rasta members). They were broke and unemployed in the deprived and depressed industrial Birmingham in Thatcher's broken Britain. Despite being radical and political, they had had a couple of hits and tasted the blood of commercial success. They lost their edge and embraced the mainstream. Red Red Wine was the garbage that heralded the horrible radio friendly pop reggae phase of their career which lasted til they split, but before they were rich, they were political and wrote genuine reggae protest songs about the evils of colonialism and racial injustice. Their first album, Signing Off, is frankly excellent.

I kept trying to think why this song bothered me so much and at first I thought it was because of the line "I'm gonna marry her anyway" because there was just something I didn't like about it, but I think you've helped me figure it out. It's like you said, they don't focus on the daughter hardly at all. Honestly, I want to know how her feelings are about this whole thing. Sure, the music video shows her part, but I don't want to rely on the music video, I want to rely on the song alone cause that's kind of the point of a song if you're going to tell a narrative with it.

You know, I think there is a good story here f we go with what Todd said at first and make it a Gay Reggie song instead of the whiny stuff it turned out to be. The song could be about how the girl's father and the singer want to be together, but the girl, despite being good friends with the singer, dislikes the idea due to prejudices taught to her by her grandparents. Went to a good university. My GF's parents refuse to meet me because 1) they want someome from their nationality and 2) they want to decide who their daughter should date. Are we dating and moved in together anyway? Yeah. But would it also be common sense for her parents to get to know me and be happy for their daughter? Yeah. Which is the only reason I care for her parents coming around because would make my GF at ease. Otherwise yeah, we are going to live our lives regardless.

I see the song's point aswell. I was in the guy's shoes (and yours) too. I worked in the same field as them, graduated high school, had my own place, raised very respectful.....but I was black (dun dun DUUUUUUUUN). His parents were super traditional and really wanted a pure bred hmong baby. Lo and behold, I was already pregnant with their first grandbaby. Here is the difference...I made a compromise with his parents. We had a traditional marriage and decided to do the American wedding later. So I do see the fault with this song. You have to compromise with the parents. It's not fair to have your partner choose between you and family if you can help it.

My brother loved this song due to the fact that he hates authority figures and people telling him stuff he doesn't want to hear so he would play it as many times as possible cause it connected with him. I on the other hand thought it was an obnoxious song about an emotional guy who won't take no for an answer, so yea why ask if you don't want to hear no. When he asked me and I told him what I thought about the song he was pretty pissy about it and all I had to say was thanks for proving my point.

I have the feeling that the first interpretation that Todd gave of the song was the mindset of Nasri Atweh (or however you spell his name) when he wrote the song. I get the feeling that a lot of listeners don't see it that way.

Todd would probably still hate this, but I do listen to a girl cover which makes it gay, and therefore better.

in some cultures, when signing a marriage contract, its the girls dads signature that goes on there. like ive heard of people marrying off their daughters without the daughter even knowing. so, if this was the kind of culture these people belonged to, yeah the dads okay is pretty important. since, he's the ultiamte decider of this girls fate. (which is messed up and awful, but it still happens.)

I'm slightly upset that Todd doesn't like Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc, I think it's fun. I agree that UB40 sucks though, and this song is all I've heard from Magic! ,and they appear to suck too.

I always thought he was saying Cruel... and I'm sure the line I heard was "why do you have to be so cruel, im going to marry ya anyway" which is disturbing on many many levels... I guess in was wrong or we got a different version in the UK

I worked retail when this song was huge and i wasn't able to decipher the lyrics well. I thought he was singing something along the lines of "why do you have to be so cruel.. i'm going to marry you anyway" and I thought like oh this song is so dumb why are you trying to marry someone you think is cruel? And then I watched this review for the first time and realized the song was actually dumber than I thought.

Asking someone for something is giving them permission to say no. Also, some girls (like me) expect a guy to pass muster with their dad, and if he doesn't make the cut, we drop 'em.

This song sounds to me very much like Mean by Taylor Swift only with Rude instead of Mean in the Chorus and Taylor Swift’s angelic voice replaced by nasally Cod Reggae whining. Yes, I confess she’s a guilty pleasure, at least a few songs.
