Pop Up Bench Dogs

Pop up bench dog
I wanted to make some bench dogs to my work table. Why not make them pop-up bench dogs?
I used IKEA push latches (for kitchen cabinets, called UTRUSTA) and pallet oak wood for the bench dogs. The work table that I have is just made of some construction plywood.
I made a simple housing/casing for the push latch and bench dog, so I can reuse it when I come around to build a new workbench in the future. The case is made of some scrap pieces of plywood, wood glue and a few nails.
The construction of this is simple and pretty straight forward.
Regarding the push latch. It's actually a bit too long. That is why I made a cut out in the bench dog, so I can turn it, to lower it a bit. If I would make this again, I would have look for some shorter push latches. But - I have to admit - the height the bench dog springs out in the air is awesome. I played far too long with this, and I'm happy every time I use it. It works, and its fun. Makes me smile when it just fly out like that. I guess this may qualify as a weird IKEA hack.
I would like to have all my chisels loaded with these types of push latches. It would be super cool and a bit dangerous...

Haha. Thanks. Do you mean the bench dogs or the push latches? :-) Bench dogs for holding/fixing the workpiece on the table. And the push latches are mostly used for kitchen cupboards or drawers. Sorry if I answered too much here my friend - but when you wrote the question I knew I kind of messed up with not explaining why this is used or so handy to have. :-) All the best to you! Excellent idea...let us know how it works. My biggest concern would be getting sawdust in there...but a shopvac would solve that problem.

Thanks a bunch Rob! I was thinking about that too, and time will tell. There is a lot of space for the sawdust to pass, and any build up will be moved every time push up/down the dog. But - I hear you. I had the same concern. :-) Thanks again!

You make a good point. Because it fits in there so perfectly, it should push out the sawdust. I like how convenient it is. No looking for that dog gone bench dog, it's just waiting for you.
