The reason you lose retention at the examples is because you say “thank you for watching”, as if it’s already over. My brain wanted to react by moving on to something else even though I knew the video wasn’t over, because that’s a key phrase that tells the listener/viewer that things are coming to a close. I’d reccomend just stating “here are some more in game examples” and saving “thank you for watching” until afterwards. It’s a small thing, but giving your closing remarks too early sends the message that what follows isn’t worth watching. People will have to already understand the importance of the examples and really be invested in seeing them to stick around when their brain is kind of pointing them in another direction already. That said, you make some of the most helpful and informative videos on smash ultimate. You save me hours of sifting through pro games by analyzing their habits and breaking them down into their simplest forms. Anyone who really wants to improve should do that regardless, but very few people take the time out of their day to share their findings publicly. Thanks for doing what you do, and doing it well.

Awesome video. Super informative and really good examples that demonstrate what you're saying nicely. I think people don't stay till the end (ngl I didn't) is because trying to read and watch the clips at the same time is kinda hard to do. I suggest narrating the example section at the end. Or use freeze frames and text that's a bit easier to read. I find trying to read them and watch at the same time is a bit stressful because I either miss a bit of the gameplay I'm trying to analyze, or I miss the subtitle.

I so thoroughly enjoy these videos. I have 3 kids, and very little time to go to tournaments (I sort of run tournaments and funnel resources to the scene from behind the scenes where I’m from). It’s so hard to stay in shape and continue to improve, since I don’t get much practice in person, but these videos help me a LOT by talking and walking through these concepts! I have learned so much about maintaining advantage, playing aggressive and smart (Mango is my favorite melee player, so I especially enjoyed that video), and now I get to go online and practice landing! I don’t suck in this area, but I definitely don’t put myself in the best positions. The idea, that we should be returning to NEUTRAL as soon as possible, and not trying to get back into advantage is what I really needed to realize! I often fall for the bait of “I just got hit…I’m going to go towards them and hit them as quick as I can” instead of thinking “How do I get back to neutral, so that I can play my game and put myself in a good position.” An amazing Melee player to consider when thinking about positioning (even out of disad) is PPMD. He was one of the most position minded top players in the game for a long time.

Here’s a quick tip that I didn’t know for a while and some people might not be aware of. If you get hit into the air and are in hit stun, you can’t fast fall until you use an aerial or a jump. So if your character has a fast aerial you can use right after hit stun ends to have all your options when landing. This can get punished if you use it a lot and your opponent is near you, but if you are a safe distance away from your opponent it is a good option. Zachray does this a few times in the video, 3:26 - as wolf he uses fair while he is a safe distance from wario 5:37 - When hit stun ends he immediately uses fair at the top of the blast zone 12:03 - He uses aerials to have faster landing options Hope this helps someone!
@shieldlesscap61245 жыл бұрын
To be fair, in your example at 2:10, the Corrin can’t react to the Roy if he decides to go for DJ Up Air, and if he does nothing, Corrin falls fast enough that a DJ Up Air will connect. Since the Corrin does not want to burn their airdodge out of fear that Roy will just catch them with a Smash Attack, a jump is the safest option there since it’s the only option without risk of an immediate threat that will kill. At 2:28, the Corrin is actually in a better position than before, since now the Roy is on the ground and the Corrin has more time to react to a possible jump up air. He fails and gets hit, but this is a shorthop up Air rather than a fullhop/DJ up Air so it doesn’t kill, and either way he was significantly more capable of airdodging this time.

I joked about Void in the comments in a recent video too, but for real a few weeks ago some pros were talking on twitter about one of Void's strengths being how well he switches between defensive and offensive play. And how his timing always works out well but also throws off his opponent in the moment. Another player too who's been commended on their unpredictable options is Marss, how he'll pick the most seemingly random option and yet it's always the right one.

Hey I just wanted to say, I love how analytic you are! I like this series a lot. Some of my two cents as someone who doesn't always watch the end is that it's nice to have you talking and explaining things as it happens. In your example segments at the end however, you just have text and force us to read while also trying to watch what's going on. I'm personally not a big fan of that, but I love everything else you do. Just wanted to give some feedback that maybe can help out tho :)

Watching this is very helpful but I always doubt that I’ll ever be able to properly implement this as it’s a lot to take in. I personally didn't want to watch the examples because the video went from hearing you talking about the interactions to me having to read descriptions while also trying to watch what's happening. I think you'd get more retention for the examples if you talked over them instead of using text, and also if you scattered them throughout your video, maybe leaving a couple good ones at the end. This was a fantastic video though, and helped me out a lot. Great stuff!

People leaving at the end of a video is extremely common, especially with commentated videos. Usually I can tell a video is getting close to the end because of the tone of the person talking as well as context before the person talking even references that the video is almost over, and I'm sure other viewers do this too. Its almost second nature for me to just move on to the next video the moment the person talking starts saying that its the end of the video.

Coming from other fighting games has definitely made me hold shield any time I hit the ground out of disadvantage, and it has gotten me punished plenty of times, but I think the biggest reason has been that I do always JUST land. No amount of drifting helps me when my opponents can just push nothing and grab my landing (my biggest issue is definitely disadvantage vs Mario, Bowser, and sometimes Joker). The whole fast fall + nair thing sounds a lot like what I personally need to mix in

One bit of advice: 4:36, when we just see a raw count of double jumps used we don't actually have a proper comparison to those numbers without knowing how many juggle situations there were. It is best to have the proportions displayed either instead or alongside the count. Because, you know, if the top level game only had 10 juggle situations total, and the mid level one had 32, then we'd actually find the top level players double jumped more, or if the top level game had 100 juggle situations then we could get a better gist of the shockingly low amount of double jumps, etc

4:35 I get your point and I agree with it, but thought it should be pointed out that the dabuz match was on battlefield while the other match was on smashville. With the tri-plats id imagine that Heavily reduces the need for double jumps to get out of being juggled. Haven't watched the sets but I feel like this single comparison shouldnt prove that point
