Personally, the definition of Popular Culture that appeals to me the most is John Storey's definition from his book, Cultural Theory and Popular Culture - "Pop culture is the culture that is left over after what we have decided what is high culture." This really caught my attention because I remember that one of my professors from Senior High School was also able to mention this back then. He/She told us something within the lines of, "Popular culture or mainstream culture is considered as part of the lower class of society." I also remembered everyone reacting in a confused tone.

Personally I acknowledge one of John Storey's definitions of popular culture in which he states "Popular culture is whatever is left after you've identified what high culture is" as popular culture in this case is depicted as a tool and marker of status and class, it is seen as inferior and functions within a particular society's traditions and material culture. John Storey's definitions are still prevalent, although due to mass media the deliverables of pop culture are always in constant change, varying through many new social medias and forms. In return to this, popular culture goes back to its simplest meaning "it is what a lot of people like".

John Storey’s definition of popular culture states that it is the culture that originates from the people. It is an authentic culture of the people, for the people to consume. Living in the age of mass consumerism, pop culture serves an inclusionary role in society as it unites the masses on ideals based around different forms and behaviors. It is something that we consume and as mentioned in the video, it is a product that reflects the people or is projected by the people. Just like literature, both are mediums of expression of the culture and perspectives of different societies since literature has always been a fundamental discussion in popular culture as long as the people continues to produce stories to tell.

For me, the most appealing definition of 'Popular-culture' is the first definition from Ray Browne. What he said is really the concept I see towards society. knowing that we live in a society filled with popular culture which we see mostly from social media, public television, and the fashion trends that are happening right now. People tend to believe in what other's believe because it's popular and trending.

The definition of pop culture that struck me most is John Storey's "Popular culture is a site of struggle between the resistance of subordinate groups and the forces of incorporation" which was further explained as an "exchange or negotiation." Nowadays, popular culture penetrates every social class, and although prejudice still exists in pop culture, it is no longer as much of divisive system between the rich, the poor, etc. as it was throughout history. People of all backgrounds, for example, recognize and can appreciate Taylor Swift without questioning why they do. Rather, pop culture has become more of an interaction between everyone about the actual subject and not the subject in relation to social implications.

The definition that I resonate with is the first definition stated by John Storey “Popular culture is simply culture that is widely favored or well-liked by many people.” Popular culture gives a certain feeling of belonginess to a certain group of people wherein they relate their experiences or memories from a tv show, movie, etc.

John Storey's first definition of pop culture is the one that I agree with the most. In my opinion, the concept of trends is closely related to this definition because trends are essentially things that have become popular, so we can assume that a large crowd likes it. But trends are not exactly popular culture; we can tell the difference if someone is just enjoying a piece of media since it is popular or they just genuinely like it and it happened to boom in popularity. Hence, we can only relate the two terms together, not interchange it. Growing up in a vastly technological and progressive world, I like to believe that pop culture is long lasting and not just a trend, because trends are very easily replaced and just come and go. What was once a trend could possibly become pop culture, but pop culture cannot be a trend.

The definition of pop culture that I highly resonated with is "popular culture is no longer to be distinguished from high culture." As a creative and aspiring artist, I see other people like me that try to break that boundary of going against all things that pop culture are for by trying new things out that allow us to distinguish ourselves from others. An artist is all about sending messages in a contemporary way through different mediums that will touch certain people that relate to the message being relayed. So many people are into different things as well so it's hard to distinguish what's "popular" nowadays too.

I think, one of the best definition of pop culture for me is the “the productive ways in which audiences engage with the pervasive cultural currency to make it their own.” because in my own opinion pop culture is everywhere and it has a wide of varieties depending on the media, I believe that we adapt what we consume and make it our own personality or even a behavior. The only downside with this is that we tend to consume things because it is popular but we forgot to synthesize if it is good for us and the society.

The definition of Popular Culture that I appealed with the most is Tim Delaney’s definition of how it is generally recognized as the vernacular of people’s culture that predominates in a society at a point of time. I believe that popular culture is ‘where we are’ at the moment and not ‘where are going’. I agree with how Delaney said that it predominates in a society at a certain point of time, because pop culture relies on what trend has evolved during a certain point of time. In pop culture we can see what most people are into and how much these trends are influencing their daily lives and I do believe that people’s practices, beliefs, etc. will be influenced once again once a new set of trends will evolve to be a popular culture

For me, Popular Culture is defined as the "leftovers once people decided what is high culture." There are reasons that there are art critics now, from music, paintings, movies, games, installations, and books, and it is them who decides that it is high culture. But technically, it is more of the taste of the people rather than critics, as shown numerous times that people consuming the media and critics have different views. There are reasons why fandoms exists, and why there are lores and fan fictions and opinions about arts. All definitions apply though, but to be honest, it is really people who decide what is pop culture and what's not.

Dustin Kidd’s definition stated that pop culture is a set of practices, beliefs, etc. In my understanding, pop culture is in some way a standardized set of works that is tailored to the people or society in a certain period of time. In simpler explanation, pop culture can be derived from the mixture of old/classic literature that is revised to interest the current society.

The definition that strikes me the most is one of the six definitions of pop culture by John Storey, "Popular culture is the culture that originates from the people." Popular culture is continuously changing as we speak since it is produced by us and influences our lifestyles. Thus, popular culture constantly changes due to the public's changing preferences that are a product of their fickle-mindedness and herd mentality. In this way, popular culture is defined as the culture of the people since it is a product of people having a collective preference on a certain subject - which leads to a collective identity for a certain time.

I personally believe in the definition of pop culture originating from the people. Pop culture is filled to the brim with "iconic" scenes, words and all sorts of media from all over the world, but this doesn't mean that just about anything that was " from the higher culture " can be considered pop culture. Pop culture can originate no matter what your standing is. In the end, what truly fuels pop culture is the people, because it was made by the people, for the people. Without the people supporting and enjoying it, pop culture won't function, because no one is there to help propagate and extend its popularity for it to become *popular* culture

The definition I agree with the most is pop culture being a culture that originated from the people. It is the people who define what is relevant, and they are also the ones who bring these relevant things into daily life. In the end, after all, they are the ones who consume these things and decide what to reference, discuss, and create.

The Oxford reference definition, "the everyday life of arts and artefacts of 'the people' within the society", resonated with me the most. I like to think that popular culture is more of what we all can remember, even if vaguely, rather than something that is merely trending for the time being. Because of this, we can see how literature could play a part in popular culture. So long as it is well known or clicks in someone's head, it could be popular-- especially when it brings immense joy to a person even if they haven't talked or thought about it in a while.

The definition that appealed to me the most is the one that says pop culture is the culture that originates from 'the people', because I feel like it's easier to know if a thing or a culture is included in pop culture. Maybe, we can't really impose what is not pop culture, since there are other factors that may be used, but we cannot deny that the things that the general public or 'the people' consume are popular culture. Whether you are fond or not fond of a specific trend, it is still a popular culture that 'the people' consume.

To answer the question, my most favored definition would be Tim Delaney's definition of popular culture. Every now and then, a new trend takes the world by storm and instantly becomes the main topic that everyone constantly talks about (e.g. Korean pop culture, TikTok). That, in turn, hugely shapes the direction of society, such as in business and economics. Eventually, a new trend arises and everyone then shifts to that said trend, thus shaping a new society. This cycle then proceeds to indefinitely repeat.

Delaney’s definition of pop culture is most appealing to me because while it delivers more or less the same idea as those of Kidd and Browne, but the addition of the phrase “at a point in time” makes it clear that the so-called ‘vernacular’ shifts with the times. In comparison to Kidd and Browne’s definitions, as well, it feels a lot more simplified and delivers its idea in a more concise manner.

The definition from John Storey is the one I believe is the most straightforward yet agreeable definition of pop culture for me. Pop culture is essentially, shaped by the people. Every iconic movie character, scene, quote or music is thanks to individuals collectively deciding that those aforementioned pieces of media form popular trends and fads. Without people, popular culture will be nothing more than an evocation of a once blissful society. Though these opinions may be forgotten over the course of a few years, time and time again society will eventually create new ways to define favored media. Pop culture is ever-changing, but it will and always be based off of people's thoughts. One thing that bothers me in today's society is how pop culture is treated like a product instead of an art form that represents various media the people favor in a period of time. Not much heart is put in some productions, making a quick cash grab of what is famous. Just because it is for mass-consumption, it does not make it any less great than that of "high culture".

i think i agree with john storey's definition of popular culture in which he says that it is simply culture that is widely favoured or well-liked by many people. like you said the definition of pop culture varies from person to person but at the end of the day it really is just what's popular or what's mainstream. but also taylor swift 👍

The definition that appealed to me the most is Tim Delaney’s. I agree that pop culture is vernacular and people’s culture because it is made for the people, and it exists because of its effective appeal towards people who consumes it. Moreover, given that it is for the masses, its relation to the vernacular somehow determines its success in serving its purpose through its portrayal of the different realities.

In my opinion, the definition of popular culture that appealed to me the most is "Popular culture is 'mass culture'", because it kind of defines how our media is right now. We would try to appeal to the masses' liking to what is trending or what is popular. A prime example of this would be the Marvel franchise, usually these movies would follow a certain formula that makes it appear like each and every film similar to each other, but people would still eat it up because a lot of people like superheroes and because they are relatable.

Although these definitions are similar with one another and they're all valid and equal to me, I often see popular culture as art- hence, one of the Oxford references stating that it's "the everyday life or arts & artefacts of 'the people' within a society". I also can resonate with "popular culture is no longer to be distinguished from high culture". I've been consuming a lot of art and pop culture as an artist and these days in the 21st century, many artists too, are becoming diverse and expanding their tastes and aesthetics that allow the mass media to produce and consume so much different kinds of other media on different mediums. Similar to trends, they are often incorporated into pop culture as well.

For me, popular culture is a culture of people wherein people can unify as a group when it comes to entertainment and needs in which they can relate, benefit, and use. It is stated that popular culture benefits the masses, considering that humanity can use it as a tool to create a society as a whole. However, in today's generation, there are a lot of things being produced and released, and people have their distinctive tastes when it comes to their favored taste. Furthermore, popular culture is not static due to the reason that the world changes and grows, and there are a lot of circumstances that may happen that may affect how society perceives pop culture.

I could not agree more with Tim Delaney's definition of pop culture because for me, pop culture serves an inclusionary role to all of us as it allows the masses to interact in a way that we critically consider the society we live in. It lets us recognizes ourselves in each other. That being said, I believe pop culture could influence a society.

“Popular culture is no longer to be distinguished with high culture.” is the definition that appealed to me the most because I like the freedom it gives to the term. The imposition of high culture and its separation from popular culture doesn’t sit right with me because it seems to be too black and white. This definition opens the boundaries and limitations of what popular culture is and how the masses can manipulate it which is why it appealed to me the most.

What do you mean by the dominant classes want to impose what pop culture is ?
@khristinadoctor9693 жыл бұрын
I agree with John Storey’s definition that explains how pop culture originates from the people. As individuals, we all have the capacity to create new forms of media and we all have the ability to make our own contributions in this. Pop culture is not something that originates from a higher culture but can come from any of us. I also agree that pop culture can be considered as everyday artefacts of the people in a society because in relation to John Storey’s definition this is something we produce and is made popular by us too. Pop culture reflects our morals, values, and beliefs as individual members of society.
@mikaelaashleyvaldenarro26073 жыл бұрын
"Popular culture is no longer to be distinguished from high culture." What mostly resonated with me are the realities posed in the last two definitions. Being in an art-related program, we are part of the production process whether about content or visuals. The implications that it is rather the interaction of two different forces that breeds popular culture rather than the dominance of one party is a reality we are exposed to. Since 21st century is all about embracing change, and valuing individual's worth and uniqueness, it is really hard to have a permanent basis as to what determines a popular culture. The preferences of the masses are no longer caged into limited options thus, many varieties arise. The range produced then somehow blurs the imposed distinction between authentic and commercial. What stays constant is the importance of conveying a message properly and effectively to the audience who consume the material.
