Hooray for porn! What would we be without it? Bored, repressed, frustrated. Porn nails the lie that sex is something we should be ashamed of. Porn tells us that that sex doesn't just come in vanilla flavour. Porn lights up the lives of the depressed, the lonely, the sexually unadventurous. It spices dull marriages; it brings excitement to relationships; it tells us where to look and where to touch. Porn allows the timid to indulge fantasies they'd never live out in real life and the adventurous to experiment with new forms of pleasure. Now that it has stepped down from the top shelf and waltzed across the internet we can all enjoy it without the stigma of being cast as dirty old men... and women. Secretly we all know it's one of the great pleasures out there: all that remains is that we stop pretending it's something dirty and come straight out and salute it.
Or maybe not. Is pornland really such a nice place to be? Far from nailing a lie isn't porn selling a lie: that women are always eager and willing to engage in extreme practices, that bodies are always tanned and buffed, breasts always pert, orgasms always explosive? Isn't this a recipe for frustration and disappointment? And to attract the restless voyeur, porn is always having to up the ante -- cyber-sex is getting ever harsher, more degrading, more extreme. Salute it? Why? When all intimacy is reduced to heave and thrust what scope is left for sensitivity and tolerance and love? And what kind of a warped, desensitised view of the world of human intimacy does this offer up to our children? Men finding it harder to be satisfied with their real world partners; women feeling inadequate and pressured to live up to the cyber-competition -- this is the reality of pornland.
So which is it -- the great liberator of the libido or a blight on human intimacy?

In response to the libertarian who advocates keeping drugs illegal as a way to bring enough pain into the lives of addicts to encourage rehabilitation: I had a friend who became fiendishly addicted to crack cocaine (which may be inevitable with that particular drug). Eventually he was arrested for possession and sentenced to several years in prison. My friend was of slightly below average height and weight. He served a year in prison and because he was not enough of a warrior to defend himself easily, was repeatedly raped in prison. When he was released he was on probation and had to report to a parole office and take regular drug tests. Any failure of a drug test, it was made explicitly clear to him, would result in a parole violation and would consequently be re-sentenced to a prison term. I let this friend stay with me in my apartment for some time after his release. He found a job and was a good roommate who never caused any problems for me while staying at my place. He was a funny, enjoyable to be around person. Unfortunately my friend was hopelessly addicted, and enjoyed his liberty for only a few months before failing a drug test. He was sentenced to 5 years in the state penitentiary. He was again subject to violence including constantly being raped in prison, and within the prison was forced to serve long stretches of solitary confinement. He was released after serving three and a half years. Within a few days of being released from this second term, he jumped off a bridge into the Ohio river. His body was found several days later. Prison didn't help my friend to overcome his addiction to crack. It just caused him unimaginable suffering which led directly to his suicide. This is just one example, but I cannot help thinking that it is not atypical. I think the notion that punishment, taking away a person's freedoms and subjecting them to the brutality of prison life is in anyway 'good' for anyone is entirely incorrect. Torturing people, (which forcing them to live in a cage and to live within a population of extremely violent individuals most certainly is), does not improve their ability to control their lives or make them well adapted citizens. It simply tears them apart psychologically in a slow, dehumanizing way, more often than not turning them into more dedicated criminals and depriving them of all self respect and ability to have happiness.

I'm coming up with a blank.(no pun) What I can find is lots of meta analysts and such which fail to draw a connection between pornography and social ills. ***** WTF are you talking about? What world? Where did you find this information? STI fact #1 in the west, doctors suspect that at least 20% maybe up to 25% have herpes simplex 2. Have you had sex with 5 people? If so, one had herpes. (Statistically) Now lets discuss exporn star anti-porn crusaders. Let me run down a quick profile of the typical anti-porn exporn star crusader: Raised in a moderately to very religious house hold. Usually abusive, but no more or less likely, statistically, to have included sexual abuse. In their teens they start using drugs, having sex, might get knocked up etc. Start hooking and or stripping. End up doing porn, get sober in a fucking 12 step (change one life impeding addiction for another) program. They "Find Jesus" blah fucking blah. And now it was the porn that ruined their lives and so on. I about believe their sincerity as much as I do Traci Lords' Your abortion claim: Quantify that statement with statistical data. I somehow doubt that if there is a greater number of abortions, it terribly significant in percentage points. But I will say this about abortion, In the U.S. those area's most known for being conservative and having the most god fearing citizens also have the highest rates of abortion in our country. So I don't know what your point in mentioning abortion is. Drugs, Rock singers have a high incidence of drug use, so... should we just say rock is bad for society and get rid of it? Same is true with conservative radio talk show hosts. Life expectancy: Prove that statistically porn start live half as long as non-porn start in the same brackets. The woman crying. People do stupid things that the instantly regret all the time. If her job was taking tech support calls and she did the same thing, you wouldn't cite it as some proof of something blah blah. But because this woman's job was sex, it's somehow magically no longer 1 isolated incident, but it is indicative of an entire "industry." So if this person even exists, well I'd feel bad for her. But In the end, you are citing the worst case scenario horror stories, I'll bet were sourced from anti-porn crusaders, and suggesting that they are the norm. If porn enjoyed the same legal protections and rights as every other kind of job, well we wouldn't be having this discussion.

***** I didn't say they aren't more susceptible. But I don't actually know the statistical data as to how much more, and I'm guessing you don't either. is it 100% more at risk or 2%? How about I help ya out: www.aidshealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Adult-film-poster-STD-Prevention-2014.pdf I realize this information would be deeply hidden from someone that wouldn't spend 5 minutes on google and then be willing to click 3 links to get to the actual study. This only relates to the clap and chlamydia, HIV, Herpes and syphilis were not addressed in this study. Neither was HPV. So there's your supporting documentation. Sadly it's not comparative but here's some STI info for the general population here: www.cdc.gov/std/stats/ it ain't light reading. Here's some interesting information though I hesitate to cite it, but if it's remotely accurate, it suggests that in the general population about 1 in 3 people has something: www.livescience.com/48100-sexually-transmitted-infections-50-states-map.html So... I'm not sure your increased rate hypothesis holds enough water to argue from. Perhaps a debate on the importance of proper barrier method contraceptives is in order? "What kind of sad life do you live that you have to write something that long winded just to justify sleaze?" That tells me more about you than I think you'd like. You don't have a real problem with porn, you have "moral" (probably religious or sex negative feminist I can't tell the difference) objection to it. Your problem is philosophical NOT fact based. I was not "justifying sleaze" as much as telling someone who was spreading miss information on a subject, or making assertions with no evidence to back them up, I was hip to her bullshit. If you have to misrepresent the facts or lie to support your position, you have no position...

***** "watch "Ex Porn Star Presents The Truth About Pornography to Students at Christian High School" or look up Shelly Lubben (remove spaces) https:/ /www.shelleylubben. com/porn-industry" That is the result of something called information laundering. In fact I think you cut and pasted your data from the very top of a google search. "The Truth About Pornography to Students at Christian High School" Yeah that is about as self discrediting as a thing can be. Sooooo an "Exporn star anti-porn crusader" who went and "found god" goes to a christian high school to talk about how evil porn is... If you cannot see the credibility problem there, I don't know what to tell you. Also you answered my curiosity, you're religiously motivated. This means you are accustomed to the philosophy that it's okay to lie if the result you get is favorable to you. Sort of how there's lots of lies about pot floating around, and that's okay if it keep kids from smoking pot... (No I don't fucking smoke pot but I support legalization. have to be 21 etc..) The porn industry, or more accurately the just off mainstream porn industry is pretty ugly. It's a dirty business with no legal protections for workers. But it is not porn which is evil, it is the underground nature of porn that, like illegal prostitution, makes it dangerous. Any time you drive something underground it falls in to the hands of criminals or otherwise very unethical people. However, in the modern world a huge amount of the porn produced is being made by the guy down the street and his wife or girlfriend then uploaded so a site somewhere. So the problem is not that porn is evil. What is evil is that sex work is either unregulated, under regulated or out right illegal. Sex workers have no rights, they have no way to get in front of a judge to settle a dispute, etc. That's fucking evil. What's evil is people like you passing moral judgements like this which drive things like prostitution and pornography underground and cause it to be dangerous. Because invariably people like you are not willing to stand up for the rights of sex workers to work safely, only to "lead them from their sinful lives" Or are you still under the delusion that it's the sex work that's inherently bad? I want to address you equivocation of adult porn (Porn made with consenting adults) and child porn. Child porn is to legal pornography, what being a heroine dealer is to a doctor. "They ain't the same thing. It ain't the same ball park, hell it ain't even the same sport" to paraphrase pulp fiction.

***** As a matter of fact, links 2 and 3 are entirely relevant to this discussion. And once more, you are suggesting my position is that adult entertainers are not at higher risk, something which could not be further from the truth and frankly I think any rational person knows that's not my position. All I've said is that you need to answer the question of how much more at risk. Are they 10 times more likely? 100 times? 2 times? 5 times? How much more likely? How about this little tidbit. They get tested around 1 time a month or so. And depending on where you are and what the laws are, if you test positive for certain things, you can't work anymore. Most americans don't get tested nearly enough... And most people who know they have something lie about it. Especially about herpes. I believe the stat I read was that about 80% of people with herpes s2 don't know they have it and about 50% who do know don't tell their partner(s) Link 1: Had you read, and comprehended my post, I offered link 1 to you as a gimme for your position. You failed to provide corroborating evidence in your assertions so I thought I'd help you out. I know exactly what I posted and what it says because I READ it.
@whitetransgirlwithdreads
@whitetransgirlwithdreads 9 жыл бұрын
***** The science is not supporting your assertion. In reality, sex crimes against women have declined even though access to porn has increased. This isn't peer reviewed but it's a little info for ya to chew on: www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/18/AR2006061800610.html So I'm not suggesting that porn is responsible for the decline is sex crimes against women, what I'm saying is that there's no factual basis for asserting: " If thats happens to the readers of mens magazines, I can only imagine what porn does to men." The statistics would suggest, it does nothing, or POSSIBLY it's a factor that contributes to lower rates of sex crimes, along with a lot of other things like teaching young men what the word No means. I could delve deeply in to this topic and provide statistical data that would probably piss you off, but I'll refrain. Now, let me ask you something, I know my answer. What exactly, evidence wise, scientific data wise, would I have to show you to get you to reconsider your position? I'm not saying make you "Like" porn or even find it morally acceptable, but what evidence will you accept that would cause you to realize that a) everything you've said and based your opinions on , is not remotely scientifically valid b) it's virtually all appeals to emotion (mostly the emotion of fear) c) Not the rule and not necessarily the exception but not the norm to say the least. If you find pornography, prostitution etc morally objectionable, that fine. You are entitled to choose the moral convictions you espouse. I won't argue that right, or even that your basis is philosophical in nature so you shouldn't have it. I only have a problem if you use appeals to emotion, or lies, or misinformation or misrepresentation of the facts to support your position. Because as I said before, if you have to do that to support your position, you have no position. My answer though is I have no emotional connection to my position on this. If research leans toward pornography being harmful, I'll believe it's harmful. But that's not the path the evidence is currently taking. As for horror stories. For every girl who's life was "ruined" by porn I can offer one that was either indifferent to the experience or loved it. What difference exactly would that make? Coal miners in W.V. have a shorter life expectancy than the average. Do we condemn their choice to work the mines? Or do we more rigorously defend their rights and try to regulate the industry better? This goes for any high risk profession.

Negative parent/child interaction, or the lack of positive interaction, programs us to go through life with a huge emotional hole that we are on an endless and fruitless search to fill, making us highly susceptible to addiction. This won't end until we as a society get serious about really helping parents and children. And that must go well beyond education, which is necessary but not nearly sufficient. Building healthy communities that support and value their members would have a much greater impact.

People with ________ addiction have other problems that are not related to _______. The fundamental issue is the personality of the person, not the "drug" of choice. I can tell you first hand that it isn't just the obvious ones like sex, drugs/alcohol, etc. It is ANY behavior that becomes rote, repetitive, and pleasurable. The depression and anti-social behavior come from that singularly limited outlet which over time becomes unsatisfying. Human brains constantly need new and different stimulation to thrive. For whatever reason people with this issue have a hard time pursuing that variety on our own motives, or with healthy balance. General Practitioners should NOT be dealing with or opining on addiction because they are NOT trained to deal with it as the speaker openly admits. His OPINION though earnest and well intended is poorly informed. Unfortunately his credentials make him a symbol of authority on the subject and whether this is a proper view or not, it makes it valid in the eyes of many people in the world including legislative bodies, or political action groups which tend to act on these emotional urges. Dealing with addiction will not be successful if we continue to deal with the objects: prohibition was a failure. The war on drugs has its own woes. None of use were alive in the late 1800's to early 1900's when the anti-masturbation mania was rife, but you can lookup some of the torture devices and abusive "treatments" for this that parents enacted on their children. Emotionally motivated crusades - no matter how well intended - always seem to end in a calamity. We must act to refute hysterical fear at all turns and resist its effects on society. Hysterical fear after-all, becomes a repressive and addictive behavior in and of itself...

What about some young people in the debate? The Con speakers are simply old, and out of touch with the topic. PD: The worst part of a debate is when the specialist says "What X say is simply not right, because .... This is a common missunderstanding of the topic" And the opposing part JUST DON'T LISTEN and just come again with their bullshit, despite being told by an expert that their bullshit IS bullshit. It's like listening to a debate between a a expert and a voice recorder in playback.

it's interesting that I can agree with all four panellists who are supposedly arguing against one another. It seems they are simply making non-contradictory claims and in the process avoid an argument all together. The argument should be whether porn addiction is problematic and negative for individuals and societies, and is using porn moderately and informatively beneficial and positive for individuals and societies.

It wasn't and when it did start (around the time of written history) it was for reasons other than love,, it was about safety and wealth. And to your point about it being a 'blight on society', studies by the University of Montreal, researchers in Denmark, and several American schools have shown that consumption of pornography has no negative affect on how a person views the opposite sex and it also has shown to decrease sexual crimes in the studied populations. The abuse of children and animals being filmed isn't pornography. It's abuse being filmed of persons and other animals being taken advantaged of in really severe and devastating ways because they are not able to give permission to activities they don't understand the implications of; and the criminals who abuse should be punished. I don't understand why it is referred to as porn, when clearly it is not. In fact I would go further and think that if anyone is filmed without their permission, they are being taken advantage of or if they are forced to partake in activities they don't really want to be a part of but are held hostage in some way, and this may not be apparent to those watching, is also abuse.

In this day and time with easy access to the internet, since a large portion of the internet consists of porn or porn related material, and finally as a consequence of a multiple number of social and cultural changes that have been ongoing for the last few decades, it is very difficult for most people to not use or have used porn in some way, shape, or form. In my opinion, porn is not only a symptom of massive social, cultural, and moral collapse, but is also itself inherently damaging to healthy human sexual relationships. Particularly troubling to me, is the fact that porn depersonalizes human sexuality, and objectifying sex and sexual related activity to the point where it can no longer be described as being sex, or related to sex. Sexuality, according to its truest biological and natural definition, necessitates a genuine relationship between a male and a female. Sex is simply the copulative relationship between the male and female sexes of which the human species is composed. Obvious;ly, what porn does is divorce the natural relationship, the real and genuine meaning and purpose of sex, and replace it with a twisted and unhealthy substitute that does little more than crudely titillate ever more questionable fantasies of a perverted order. I believe in strong families, strong relationships, strong communities, and strong governments. Porn is a social ill that poisons the world of human relationships with its inherent toxicity.

In my opinion one issue wasn't addressed in sufficient detail it's the fact that the abundabce of porn on the web leads to new form of addiction. Porn in general is a nice fix and it can be seen as a way of keeping your body healthy. However reliable, everpresent, cheap dopamine can lead to issues. It's been said that there is nothing we can do in terms of restricting porn or getting rid of it. That's absolutely true but the issue is still there. Dear readers of this comment, I welcome you to develop this thought.

LOL - Greer, who I have ALWAYS thought is a fool, once again earns that title. She cannot resist turning any real argumentation/point into a full on theatrical joke. For example: “you never see the man’s head..” - not the case in gay porn, but you wouldn’t know that. “Wanking is boring..” yes, for you perhaps - for 95% of men, it is not boring at all - otherwise they wouldn’t do it…, then… making it sound like convenience food is ‘bad’ is ridiculous. Convenience food is great in many situations and doesn’t always need to be ‘poor quality’ - the same can be said of porn. One can make ANYTHING sound bad if you say it in the tone Greer does. Her arguments are completely outdated (from the 1980s) and completely ignores HUGE pockets of society that are NOT fetishizing/defacing women.

@@megauser8512 We have thousands of years of evidence that 'Just say no' doesn't work, for anything humans find potentially addicting. Trying to block people from accessing porn or demonize them for doing so in today's ubiquitous digital world is as likely to be successful as Prohibition was for alcohol. The case of alcohol is interesting. It is the oldest and by far the most damaging addiction ever known. Yet where is the hysteria about it? We seem almost resigned, as a society, because we can't block it, so we just ignore it and focus on lesser but previously more easily policed threats like porn. We are zeroing in on the way our brains are wired for addiction, and for stimulus-reward in general. We see some of the same patterns in, for instance, alcoholism that we see in OCD, a condition where a person is literally forced to repeat patterns. Treatments such as psychedelic therapy, neurofeedback, brainwave entrainment and various forms of neuromodulation (altering brain patterns through the application of noninvasive precision magnetism, electricity, light and sound to selected brain circuits) have been shown to have profound effects in people. I have had magnets put over my brain to treat OCD and it really helped. I have also had neurofeeback and own a brainwave entrainment device that uses an algorithm of sequenced light and sound to help me wean myself off of pain medication, relax and fall asleep.

I watched with an open mind. It was interesting enough but the highlights were more highbites---they weren't thorough enough. ..like the addictions MD. I would like to listen to his experience and knowledge on the subject of all addictions for an hour or so. And, of course, good old Germaine Greer is always good for a 50 minute lecture or two (...she's interesing enough to listen to on anything including what she thought of before breakfast.) On another note, I was struck by the comment (I forget who) that there is a large range of pornographic styles, just like any other genre of entertainment or art, but everything erotic seems to get classified into one rather overarching category; albeit with many subclasses. One could argue that there is vast difference between "Rambo: First Blood" and "Full Metal Jacket" or even "Saving Private Ryan". Thus, I have found that erotic expression can be informative, enlightening, uplifting, even exciting but also, equally, it can be degrading, depersonalizing and violent. When erotic content is truncated, commodified etc., it sells...what earns profits is usually a commodity...and I guess there's a place for that too. But my biggest beef with porno isn't the erotic elelments but the detouring of the personal and intimate. And even there, I think it's OK for an older person (but even so, there may be the risk of isolation). But a 14 y/o boy bursting with unfamiliar rushes of testosterone, may reach for it and delay or evade learning about the intimacy and the "relations" part of relationship. Males seem to be already biologically endowed with a "fornication & flight" mating paradigm. So an easy way to scratch a pubescent itch, could conceivably evolve into patterns of isolation in later adult life when seeking a mate..

To date, there been no objectivity on the debate of what constitutes healthy sexual development within the human species. Morality seems to be about preserving some abstract model of society rather than taking care of people. Morality talks about good and bad, and centers some Platonic universe and If one does not adhere to this universe, then one is violating "What is", thereby centering Being over humans. For so many, morality presents itself as about getting people to be "good". It's as if the good is the goal for self, other, and society. Moralists exhibit a degree of privilege, because they already are taken care of by the power structures. This privilege makes them unaware of the Real and gets them to enforce the ideal.

OK, I'm pro-porn, in general, but Greer and Dr Livfevre were far more insightful, eloquent and clear-minded than the pro side. Further, I think you can be pro-porn and agree that porn is damaging, and to an extreme degree for some people. Perhaps all porn consumers are damaged to some degree, even if in limited ways. Porn cannot be better than an authentic loving relationship, but perhaps we should consider this premise: that porn hasn't ruined the prospect of relationships so much as the difficulties of forming relationships have pushed many people towards pornography. There is the blight of alienation in so many people's lives. Part of the attraction of pornography is very much the fact that it is forbidden, taboo, unacceptable to polite society, it is easy to consume, it is exciting, a heightening of real life but also for many a replacement for real encounters that they find difficult to generate. In some ways, porn must remain taboo. The more mainstream porn becomes, the less attractive it becomes and the more extreme that porn has to be in response. In conclusion, porn can damage relationships, but a lack of relations can push us towards porn. Porn is becoming mainstream, but perhaps we pro-porn advocates ought not to wish that it becomes more mainstream lest it lose its vital powers.

Hearing the guy talk about addiction, it sounds like he is in the wrong debate. Masturbation and pornography is not addictive to everybody as such as cigarettes and alchohol. Unfortunately to some people pornography is the closest that some will get to sex and love.
@RagingBlast2Fan
@RagingBlast2Fan 10 жыл бұрын
You can't compare cigarettes and alcohol to pornography, that is logically incoherent. Furthermore it is insulting to even suggest that people watch pornography because they can't engage in sexual relationships. Porn is just another source of entertainment.

***** Agreed, now there are people that abuse porn, but people also abuse medication that is good for you. Like anything, as long as something is not harmful to you it can't be labeled,"bad for you." Unless it is done too much. Working can be harmful if you work 24 hrs and don't eat. Porn exercises the libido and creative side of our sexual nature. And not proven, but there is the possibility that porn prevents rape. Because instead of trying to extract sexual pleasure from unwilling partners they can flip on porn and release that negative energy.

actually cigs and alcohol are not as addictive to all people either! Ther eis no universally addicting activity or substance. Many partake, some enjoy, some abstain..... some fall totally into it. I know people who smoke one cigarette a day. No more. Truth is: any amount of these substances - and porn - is unhealthy. Not wrong or evil. Just nasty sick shit.

szililolabu porn decreases the sex drive to go out and meet real women. It also is Pavlovian: jerking it with your death grip on your parts, furiously to pixellated images makes you a weak lover/ partner. You become unable to respond to women, to give or even to become aroused by real women. The stimulation and novelty factor are amazing in porn. Real life will not offer the same. Many teenagers now cannot get hard to a naked woman in their own bed when they get lucky enough to have the chance.... because since puberty they have been jerking off to porn! Look into "your brain on porn".

From the word go, did he mean "addictive purposes" or "addictive reasons"? Considering that you speak your mind, to me it's a token of misconception of the matter. Is pornography a kind of addiction? Like alcohol, tobacco, drugs TV, etc. Why are there addictions and how are they managed within the society? Is it good for the user? Why has it become business?

I grew up in a very conservative home. I was for pornography, but my parents were firmly against. they insisted pornography always leads to addiction. I still believe if you hope and wish for the worst, you will fulfill your own prophecy. That point aside, I've always thought that the addiction line of thinking is insincere at best. everyone has addictions. the world is made up of people who can't see their own hypocrisy and spend their lives denying others and justifying their own lives. for instance, the addiction to money/careers is never questioned. many cultures have been and still are being destroyed in the pursuit of profits. this is considered natural and inevitable and worst of all, good. the reason for most divorces in families isn't pornography, it is money. has been for ages. it just goes to show that if we as a people really cared about people and families, we would do more to stop the real causes of suicide, divorce, war, ect. It has been and always will be, money. not pornography or any other "bad" addiction.

Even though I don't disagree with some of the stuff Greer said, she has a very simple understanding of porn. Women are objectified and treated as cum-dumpsters in a lot of mainstream porn, but there is an extremely, extremely wide variety of different mediums that fall into the category of "porn".

There's a lot of porn, and more all the time increasingly produced by women, that just shows two attractive people having well-lit, mutually pleasurable sex. If you perceive *that* as a problem, you have the problem.

There are a lot of studies showing that what Porn people watch escalates in tabooness and extremeness over time. Shock surprise and fear all can boost dopamine once the old genres don't do it anymore. What you are seeing is not long repressed patriachal tendencies rearing their ugly head but men being led to more shocking content because they have been become desensitized to vanilla depictions of sex.
