Very good video. I especially liked your demonstration of the tensioner tool. I used a kayak strap to lock the flywheel to the engine stand so that I could loosen the crankshaft bolt. That worked a treat.

I better speed up video creation! Glad you are enjoying it, it’s a long journey…. I would always recommend to buy the best you can. I purposely bought the cheapest/worst for a reason (I want to go through this process) but be aware it’s an expensive route.

Hi Todd! This is Taiwan. The C washers are supposed to be stacked according to certain patterns. At least for my car. You can fibd the stacking pattern online. By the way... my engine is still in the car. this is a very big project to us. We can't losen the upper bell housing bolts. Have a nice weekend and thanks for documenting your work.

Hi Todd. Nice demonstrations! On the early 16v cars the RHS cam gear will always adopt that slightly "off" position at rest. My understanding is that the stretching caused by the crank when running under load pulls the that gear into the exactly correct positioning. German engineering at its most precise!

Hi Paul! Good to know, it seemed impossible to get it spot on. Did you notice if I have it the correct way 'off'? or will mine go further out of tune with engine load ?

Mine is identical. The direction of the loaded belt would tighten it to the exact mark I would think. I guess it might be possible to check it with a strobe light, though that might take a bit of thought.

Hey Todd, be really careful cleaning that fuel distributor. Don't get any dirt and debris in it. Yes I would send it away for a rebuild. They are notoriously complicated...In saying that, if you rebuild it, please do a detailed vid on it and good luck with it. You look like you're having a great deal of fun on the build...kudos to you ! Marc

@@MrToddgibbs Fail...I doubt that mate. There's a couple KZbin vids on rebuilds. My Ferrari has the K-Jet, fortunately I haven't had any issues with it. Um...I shouldn't have said that, I'm going to grab a big piece of wood now.

Wonder if anyone tested at which frequency the cambelt vibrates when tensioned correctly. (That's the method I've used to tension correctly on earlier Lotus'es. It's easy and it doesn't take more 'special tools' than a mobile phone 🙂)

Getting there, the tensioner should really be called a de-tensioner as the washers go flat with heat and it stops the belt overtightening when the engine expands. It’s interesting that even by the last cars in the early 90’s they never moved to a more modern system.

Hey Gary, Ah, it slackens rather than tightens the belt? my bad and thanks for correcting :) Im holding off putting the cam covers back on in case I've forgotten something! got a few bits waiting to go on like that... But its the fuel meter for a while first....

You should have shown how to properly set the TDC since you always have to do that while replacing the belt.
