A lot of the critics in the Comments offering (correct) advice are forgetting the difference between 'drive it like you stole it', 'drive it like you own it', and 'drive it like you can hit the RESET button when you screw things up'. This guy loves cars. He owns a very precious dream car. He'll have seen everything that you've seen about performance driving over the years. He probably knows everything that you know and maybe even a little bit more. He's probably got more real driving experience than you. Do you honestly think that he doesn't know what he could/should be doing to get the best out of this car? Of course he bloody does. But he's also the car's owner, and that makes things entirely different. ENTIRELY. Think about it: in the real world, in a car like this, one hard lap could easily land you with a £50,000 bill (special track-day insurance cover + 4 trashed tyres, brakes, clutch/transmission, a MAJOR service, and the expense of cleaning those nasty 💩stains off the driver's seat). And that modest £50,000 donation to the nearest paper shredder in exchange for a few poxy KZbin Views from bored teenagers is assuming that things have gone relatively well. Push really hard and you could destroy the car's gearbox [price unknown], blow a £160,000 engine, or smack your £1,000,000+ machine into a barrier. Yeah. Smash that clutch pedal. Blip that throttle. Snick those gears in. But be ready to sell your house, wife and kids to pay for looking cool on another one of those KZbin 'fail' videos.

His upshifts are scary (considering the cars clutch reputation). He drops like 3K to low and lets the clutch slip to compensate. You can literally see how much it unsettles the car by how much the camera shakes. Edit: you would think after 5 years of ownership, one would have learned that one of the fastest reacting engines in the world with a super light flywheel needs a bit of gas blipping to match the revs... Edit 2: since there are many commenters calling out other commenters for backseat criticizing: 1. you can be criticized by anyone, if you decide to show you actions publicly 2. you don't need to be Walter Röhrl himself to be able to criticize someones driving ability. I don't understant where this notion come from, that you need to be able to perform something yourself to be allowed to point out someone elses mistakes. By that logic, only Michael Schumacher would be allowed to commentate F1 races where Hammiltons is taking part.

Driving was totally fine and total respect for a guy willing to track his Carrera GT. But shifting indeed was a bit painful to watch, completely understandable that the owner is probably doing it slow to avoid mis-shifting, knowingly reducing the risk of mechanical damage at the cost of accelerated clutch wear(and the ultra light flywheel definitely doesn't help in that regard minus its reduced tendency for wheel lockup), most likely all he needs is a couple more track days to build up confidence and shift as it was intended. Reminds me of my 1st time in an S2000, I shifted it "normally" at first in hope to feel the clutch out and the car obviously did not like it, locked up the rear tires for a split sec going from 1st to 2nd, but as I drove on I started to understand, the short pedal travel and shifter throw were perfectly in sync only when you shifted fast. Afterwards it was a blast to drive, actually required far less attention to precisely rev match since it felt like the car was doing it for me

@@MrGrazzhoppa clearly you do if you own a careers GT lmfao
@xyphur2 жыл бұрын
@@MrGrazzhoppa I don't think you or the owner realizes that his lackadaisical shifting was actually causing more wear to the clutch than if he'd been shifting it faster and not allowing the revs to drop between shifts. The thing that wears/destroys clutches is a difference in speed that the friction material and flywheel have to generate heat to equalize, and allowing that slip to occur over a long duration. Every time the revs dropped, the engine was at a lower speed than the transmission, then he lets the clutch back out and wear occurs as the transmission brings the engine back up to the same speed. Every. Single. Shift. And even worse on downshifts because the difference in speed between engine and transmission input shaft is that much greater. In a car like this, one needs to preload the shifter and execute the shift by swift clutch motion. Obviously it is a much more delicate operation than it would be in most other manual vehicles, but the principal is the same; minimize the difference in speed by executing the shift quickly so the engine doesn't have a chance to drop below the speed of the transmission's input shaft in the next gear, and don't allow the clutch to slip (which is far easier given this engine's relative lack of inertia). If done correctly and at the right speed for the vehicle in question, by the time the clutch is let back out following a shift, the engine will have dropped to the exact same speed as the transmission in the next gear, and there will be zero rotational speed difference, and thus no wear. Unfortunately for him, driving it the way he was is going to cost him more, sooner, which is sad because it is (relatively) easily avoided with proper technique.

Scary slow shifts
@racecrashrepeat2 жыл бұрын
I'm just going to make a slight negative comment here..If your reving to 8000rpm and then pushing the clutch in.. change gear and the revs drop to 2800rpm ..you re-engage the clutch and it goes back up to 6000rpm that's alot of difference in rpm speed that needs to match itself bqck. Sorry but this is a perfect example of where a car is designed to be driven more aggressively. As long as your working the clutch and gear shifter correctly being twice as fast on the gearshifts would mean much smoother acceleration, less wear and shock on the drivetrain, less clutch wear and a much more fun experience. You need be in the next gear much faster and catching those revs before they drop 3000rpm past the next gear.

Is there a reason why he is changing the gears so slow? Wouldnt it be better to shift fast, in order to match the revs?

It’s an drivers error, you are right. At no point in the lap he tries to match revs when shifting, his downshifts are even more scarier. You can see how much his shifts unsettle the car by the camera shakes.

@@Kipsell but on the upshifts, he tries to rev-match, so he must also be aware of the problem at the downshifts, since he seems to know how to shift in theory - but why is he not doing it then?

Thanks to this owner for showing off his prized possession like this. Tracking that car is such a huge risk, he put a million dollars on the line and spent atleast 50 grand on that one day! I know he wasnt pushing that thing to its limit but would you really want to? That car has killed most of its owners so far. Its awesome to see somebody track one, and drive it like the untameable beast that it is! Be scared, dont drive it like you stole it! Im not afraid of speed, the first time i felt 300km/hr i was in the back seat of my dad's jaguar XFR on the transcanada highway going through saskatchewan. My dad hated Saskatchewan so he did 260-310km/hr the entire way. It was fun, and with all the weight from 4 people plus a trunk full of luggage/ garbage bags full of clothes, that car felt like it was stuck to the road. I would be terrified to attempt that same trip in a CGT. Thats the only car on earth that i would drive carefully. The jag felt smooth at those speeds, but the CGT looks insane at 260!!

Does this guy have something against rev matching?

They're notoriously difficult cars to rev match, the flywheel is so light that the revs immediately drop making it almost impossible to rev match in time. It is possible though, just more difficult that most.

@@Uathankicks Rev matching requires two things. 1. Pedals that allow it (not too close or too far apart). 2. Little experience with the car, so you know how much light tap on gas will raise the revs. He fails at number 2.
