// What is the Porsche Taycan?
The Porsche Taycan is an all-electric car made by German automobile manufacturer Porsche. The concept version of the Taycan, named the Porsche Mission E, debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.[4] The Taycan was revealed fully production-ready at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.[3] As Porsche's first series production electric car,[4] it is sold in several variants at different performance levels, and may spawn further derivatives in future models.[5] More than 20,000 Taycans were delivered in 2020, its debut sale year, representing 7.4% of the total Porsche volume.[6]
Nomenclature
The name "Taycan" roughly translates from Turkish as "lively young horse", in reference to the steed of the Stuttgart coat of arms on the Porsche crest.[7][8]
Porsche named the high performance models Turbo and Turbo S despite the absence of a turbocharger, following the tradition set by high performance Porsche derivatives with internal combustion engines.[9]
Design
The Taycan's interior features Porsche's first fully digital instrumentation, with up to four digital displays, including a curved, free-standing 16.8-inch configurable driver's display. A 280 mm (10.9 in) screen to the right of the instrument cluster is the car's infotainment center. An optional screen to the right of the infotainment screen allows the front passenger to customise the infotainment system. On the centre console, an 210 mm (8.4 in) portrait-oriented, touchpad-controlled screen shows the powertrain's status and advises the driver on using the car's power efficiently. In contrast with the all-digital layout, the dashboard features the classic Porsche clock at its top.
The exterior styling, by former Porsche Exterior Designer Mitja Borkert, is strongly influenced by the Mission E concept car, retaining most of its design elements except the "suicide doors" and B pillars. Design features of the Taycan include a retractable rear spoiler, retractable door handles, and an advanced regenerative braking system. Taking full advantage of its drivetrain layout, the Taycan combines the fundamental short-nosed front proportions of traditional Porsches with the stretched proportions of modern front-engine models towards the rear, providing clear design links to existing models. The front features four-point LED daytime running headlamps. At the rear, the car has a short notchback-style boot lid, housing a full-width light band serving as taillights and turn signals and providing access to one of two luggage compartments. The other compartment is under the bonnet, with a claimed capacity of nearly 100 litres. The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models include carbon-fibre trim and 20-inch wheels.

Great video. Getting to drive a car like this on a track under "race" conditions is the ultimate bucket list thing to do. It sounds like from your review that every EV has its shortcomings. Maybe an idea for a video would be to create, at least hypothetically, the perfect EV taking what is in your opinion the best features you have seen from the vehicles you have experienced.

@@ruaraidhmcdonald-walker9524 LOL. Light adjustable panoramic roof, and HUD aren't tech that Porsche own. My take after a month in a 4s: Love the driving experience compared to anything; Hate the haptic controls (I want knobs); hate the preheat/cool ability (an hour is a long time to be planning ahead); love the charge time when it’s 150kw or more (I’ve gotten 20per to 85per in 10 minutes with no pre heat/cool); hate the charge time when it’s 50kw or less (might as well forget about doing anything that day). Overall, Tesla folk remind me of the drag strip whuttabouters of the mid 90s: “but muh 62 Chevelle with a b&m blower will roast your 911” The model s is amazing going straight or for commuting; the taycan is amazing thru the twisters. Let’s leave it at that. Apples and Oranges.

Put carboceramics on the Plaid and some proper tires like the Taycan that set the 7:42 time and you'll get a sub 7:20. easy.

Interesting comments. Particularly re ADAS, I don't call random phantom braking decent.... Downright bloody dangerous. 2018.50 was probably the best release and it's been downhill ever since for me to the point where I only use it on my own as my partner hates what AP has become. Uncomfortable, downright scary on occasion and many miles away from what it was when we first got our S. Pricewise, I can drop a load of options into a GTS (£20k worth in fact) and it's still cheaper than a Plaid over here when with paint wheels and EAP it's $175k... Not a cheap car and still very much a Tesla (which is both good and bad). Anyway, as of now we can't order a Plaid anyway as all S and X orders have been stopped in the UK. Great review. looking forward to more in depth comments on how easy a Taycan is to live with eg trip planning etc.

@@BenSullinsOfficial thank you for the reply - I guess the regen (when hitting the brakes) helps compared to an ICE car on the track, but probably offset by the additional work that the brakes need to do due to the additional weight of the battery... interesting that you say there is no auto-regen / one-pedal-driving - that suggests they are aiming it more at ICE drivers, which makes commercial sense - but I would find it odd too! An overpriced Bolt that's warranty expressly states that you have to maintain the car's charge between 20% and 50%. Guess the "whistle blower's report" is being ignored. Sporty in deed.

But it weighs 786 pounds more than Model S Plaid🤔 And Turbo S weighs 340 pounds more🤔 They both accelerate way slower too🤔

@@4literv6 Wait no. I accidentally looked up turbo s. This gts actually weighs 786 pounds more than the Plaid. I will edit my comment. This car also only does 0 to 60 in 3.5 secs compared to Plaid's 1.99. I don't know what Ben's thinking🤦‍♂️

What is so new about this GTS and what makes it so performance specific other than missing HP parts to make it lighter? Torque, power and brakes are the same as the higher end iterations-nothing special. I do not buy just a general statement of the different suspension tweaking. 50% of the presentation is about tech, niche positioning, and even other models. OK, not a technical presentation to support sportiness, but no specifics on performance difference either: not a professional driver to say what that is.

I wouldn't call it sportiest, while it's way worse on Nurburgring than a Model S Plaid. And I am not even talking about the fact, all of these cars have a bad battery, which is causing damages to the cells and may cause a fire or significant degradation... Just buy a Model S...

the entire taycan interior layout is unnessesarely messy, complex, trying to be exactly opposite of tesla, like useless buttons for lighting on the most prominent location, and therefore worse just by not wanting to follow. I for example havent manually switched on my lights for years since they invented sensors.

@@Patrick-bu5vy Why Tesla fangirls? 250 miles range is a joke from pretty much every EV perspective nowadays. Lucid, Rivian, the Chineese automakers. The only thing that Tycan has is good looks. From technology perspecive is it a mid quality EV with price of a premium product.

@@thatchwhistle Yeah, I did not drive it, but drove bunch of other EV, including all Teslas. To make such a review and ignore the huge issues with Tycan is just ... disngenious. In what world 250 mile range with 120k car is ok. And if you drive it like a sportscar you will end up with more like 150-170 miles range. That is not ok. I get it, dont hate on technology just becasue 'it is not tesla'. Sure I am all for it. Mustang Mach-E looks like a great car. Kia Niro is a very good tradeoff for price. But Tycan is Gucci of EVs: poor quality, and price tag of top tier product.

From dieselgate to batterygate: Six out of ten Porsche Taycan ever delivered have a problem with battery management that affects and damages battery cells, requires replacement of cells and batteries, and is causing vehicle fires, according to a source working at Porsche’s headquarters in Zuffenhausen, Germany. Porsche is reportedly hiding the problem from customers and authorities and quietly replacing damaged battery cell modules without informing customers to cover up the problem. Tesla offered to help Porsche with battery management through Audi contacts years ago, but Porsche management at the time rejected any external help, saying it could handle everything internally, the source noted. “The problem affects six of ten delivered vehicles,” the source, who could be described as a whistleblower, said. source: Teslarati
