IT'S BEGUN!! MY BOI!! MY SON!! Honestly, I think in reality, it's probably far more accurate to have Core's be around basketball size. It just feels right. Also, that LED looks SICK! That otta make doing expressions a lot easier as it will allow you to let his eye contract like it does when he's really angry or scared. I don't know if you'll be able to animate the LED but the thought of seeing his brilliant blue pupil dart about is really cool! Wheatley is one of my favorite characters of all time (finding out about him and his story in Portal 2 was what led me to get into the Portal franchise and play Portal 2) and I'm really excited that you'll be tackling him! Core's are complex (like a horse there's a lot of moving parts) and I can't wait to see what you'll do! Honestly their complexity is what makes them one of my favorite robots in media. Despite basically just being a giant eyeball, they're very expressive and I cannot wait to see how you'll bring that to life!
@MrVolt3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yup, I've already made the graphics for him to have a digital iris mechanism over the light. Haha, definitely. Having now spent many dozens of hours going over his design, I really appreciate how animated cores are. I struggle to thing of a robot character that has so many points of articulation in their "face" that doesn't use a screen for the expression.

Ooh this is gonna be awesome, I love watching folks tackle building the bots IRL 🥺 Also, I've been in the portal fandom for a looong time, and there have been *many* conversations and debates about the core's true sizes - comparing the in-game models to Chell's model is actually a bit tricky because a lot of the models in the game had to be scaled so they would look correct from a first-person view. This means a lot of models are actually bigger than their true size. I can't remember exactly, but I think folks pretty consistently come to the agreement that cores are a little bigger than a basketball. So by building him a bit bigger than half scale, you may actually be closer to his accurate size than you would be if you went 1:1 with the game model!
@MrVolt3 жыл бұрын
True! There's definitely inconsistencies depending on when you interact with him. I think he'll feel right at this size IRL too.
@pillowmoment3 жыл бұрын
Idk how true this is but according to the wiki, Wheatley is around 2 feet in height. (1’11) comes up to around Chell’s knee (a little higher) He’s very cool and short

"The Wheatley model was designed as a mechanical version of the original Portal 1 personality sphere...we came up with the onion skin design where a number of spherical plates could slide around inside each other all supported on a small motion platform mounted on a gyroscope...We were careful to make the mechanics look plausible, but we had to cheat the eyelids, since they ended up being a physical impossibility. There was no way all that geometry could fit into the space around his eye without clipping out the other side, but they were such an essential feature of the model that we resorted to crushing them up inside the eye where the player can't see them."
