The lyrics to me are easy to understand what it's about, it's about a person who has meaningless relationships, but wants them when they actually lose the relationship. The Mona Lisa was hardly famous until it went missing, being stolen. The album is about Porter and his connection with his fans, but in this song love and this parasocial connection is blurred so I can understand if it's the most confusing song. But it's a certified banger for sure.

I feel it's more about when you like someone but they literally don't care. It could be a celebrity or just a one-sided relationship. It personifies the mona lisa, where she shees thousands of people come through every day and, to her, the character of the song means nothing to her. He mistakenly thinks she's thinking about him, and when he realizes that's not the case, he has a meltdown

the way i understood it is it's a song about the dynamic between creator/influencer/celebrity and fan, using the mona lisa painting as a framing device. porter plays around with a lot of love song tropes on this album but twisting them to fit around this fan/creator dynamic first verse can be seen from the perspective of this "mona lisa": "i love the way you're not insulted/when everyone stares" referencing how thousands will gather around to see this painting in person. to her she's meant to be shared and appreciated amongst all these people and not just admired by one most of the song is probably from the perspective of a parasocial fan who misguidedly believes that the "mona lisa" invests as much interest and emotional energy into them as they do her ("i like the way you do your makeup/it's just so sweet/*i know you do it for me*") when it clearly can't be the case since she has millions of fans around the world the bridge of the song is the fan coming to this realisation and not taking it well lol ("am i just/one more face through the door?/what's it all for?"), wanting the mona lisa all to themselves and attempting to "take them home", likely also a reference to the real theft of the mona lisa that occurred in 1911

He's just one more face through the door (just one of many people coming to see the painting) but so is she, if he manages to take her.

I find this song so perferct. Not only is it a super catchy song with an amazing climax, storytelling-wise it's fantastic. The premise of seeing Mona Lisa and being unsatisfied, since many have said that seeing the Mona Lisa in person is an underwhelming experience due to so many tourists crowding the area. It makes your feel like you're just another passing face. Taking that idea and turning it into a song about someone being obsessed with the painting and hating that they're just "one more face through the door" to the point where they take action to steal her, even if it means being violent, is a really cool idea for a song even if it's not meant to be literal. :DD
