@@peterdean5300 Don’t take my word for it google, lye burns from either stucco or concrete as both use Portland cement as a binder. 👨🔬

It’s called a “burn” but it doesn’t actually burn as in, feeling very hot or stinging. Depending on the amount of exposure what it does is, dries the skin out, which will then start itching and then the skin will start flacking and peeling. Sort of like a sunburn only without the heat sensation.

@ It’s all about the pH level. What is skin's pH? The optimal pH value of skin on most of our face and body lies between 4.7 and 5.75. Now what’s the pH level of stucco? Things that make you go hmmm.👨⚕️

Very helpful safety tips! I knew mixing stucco you need to wear a respirator but didn’t know that it can mess with your lings while applying. Very good to know stucco can stay in the air for a week. Probably why when I was applying stucco to an adobe wall my asthma started acting up.

@@JimmyCapricorn77 Howdy Jimmy, the lye and silica can remain around the perimeter of your home and your neighbors home forever, then while walking can be airborne again, I’ve read where it’s almost as bad as asbestos, as it enters the lungs and does not come out. Instead it coats the lungs making it difficult to breathe. This ugly truth is just the tip of the iceberg in toxic effects. 👨🔬

Kirk ever open a hot radiator on a car back in the old day before they came out with the pressure release valve? My uncle did that and got burned on his face and hands with hot coolant ? A lot of the concrete finishers I’ve worked with, always put a plastic grocery bag over their sock, then slip on their rubber boots. You try to get the most out of the clothes and tools you use for work but no one wants to be buying new boots every week, just because you got a little pin hole in one.

@@psidvicious I worked behind as Tommy gun as the first Darby man for years back in the 80s we had knee high rubber boots that we taped our pants into, hats with bandanas that protected our faces, shirts that had to have the collars up, gloves, and glasses, that every hour we had to take off and clean them so we could see for the next hour. I did this for years even in 100 degree weather, I speak from experience, funny thing was we had a good time while at it.🦸♂️

If you're doing this as a homeowner once or twice a lifetime or a few times a year. Don't worry too much about the PPE. Just put on some latex gloves and you should be fine. If this is your job then yeah, you should be worried about breathing this stuff in daily.

It wasn't till acrylics came out that I used gloves more often. My pigmentation on my hands are bleached from lime burn. I use a lot of Vaseline before and after work, and it seems to help. Getting burns from materials can be a problem, but after years of abuse, they'll toughen up. Mostly? Lol

@StuccoPlastering hey Kirk, been watching you a long time. Lots of negative Nancy's on here. It's quite obvious your a master of your craft. When I was young I didn't want to wear safety helmets or vests. Then I saw a testing device fall right as I was about to climb a ladder 40 (was a power plant and came from 150ft up). There is a reason a true professional takes safety precautions. Let those fools saw cut concrete and breath in Siloca dust and develop COPD and pulmonary fibrosis and not be able to breath or have a limb amputated and not be able to work. Keep up the great videos. BTW the hospital told me to apply vinegar and cold water flush. I keep vinegar on me now. Never apply creams or petroleum jelly it makes the burn worse.
