I’d say at this point he’s HALF of a good storyteller because the first halves of his later seasons of AHS are great, but the second half is bad. The first 5 episodes of 1984 and also the first half of Double Feature (Red Tide) were awesome, but the last halves were terrible. Also his show Ratched started out great, but fell apart down the stretch.

The thing I liked best about Red Tide was the setting. It was refreshing to have the show filmed somewhere besides sunny L.A., and I enjoyed the grey, gloomy mood of the PTown setting. And the ensemble cast had some fun characters to play. I loved Evan Peters, Francis Conroy and especially Sarah Paulson, who was unrecognizable in her role. Macauley Culkin was a nice addition and he was good. Lily Rabe was disappointing only because she had a crappy character to play. I hated the daughter because she went full psychopath right from the start. Essentially, the whole story of Red Tide felt super rushed, which is too bad because I felt the story had potential and I would have liked to see it fleshed out to an entire season. Death Valley was just pure vintage Ryan Murphy fecal matter.

I have never agreed with a viewpoint more. Sarah Paulson and Macauley Culkin were my absolute favorite of this season. She was definitely unrecognizable, I was shaking when I actually realized who the actress was. I hated the little girl's character as well it was not very good. Death Valley was a pass for me, definitely too cheesy and not very original in my opinion.

Asylum was the first season I watched, and nothing has ever topped it for me. Even rewatching it a couple of years ago, I still found it so creepy good!

I remember the moment I found AHS. Part of the way through episode one of the pilot, I remember being like "Hold up, she's old to her, but young to him, what's happening?!?" and then buying Asylum on DVD because by that time I didn't have cable any longer, and bawling at the final episode. :P

This is probably the first time ever that I actually “wanted“ more filler and backstory in the season. As much as he drags most of the past seasons along more than they should have, I’m strangely disappointed with both stories and wanted more from them lol Plus, I was hoping there’d be a Hotel reference somewhere amongst the vampire’s scenes.

tbh I kinda agree! I preferred Red Tide. maybe double feature could've been 12 episodes so Death Valley can have more episodes and not feel so rushed. And yeah the black and white scenes were more interesting to me in Death Valley and as a gay guy, the only part thing I liked in the modern day parts was the relationship between Troy and Cal till they both died lol.

the 6th episode was more of an epilogue than anything. therefore, it isn't the true ending really and to me Red Tide ended at episode 5 "gaslight," which was amazing. currently watching coven (first 4 episodes) and so far i enjoyed red tide eps 1-5 more

Gaslight was one of the best episodes of the entire show, the way it built to a dense and claustrophobic psychological horror was incredible and it was genuinely scary without using tons of gore. And then the finale happened and Ryan Murphy proved for a tenth time he has no idea how to end his stories and just added a lot of gore and death. Ugh.

The whole season should've been Red Tide. The whole Double Feature was interesting but they failed so badly. To me the season ended with Gaslight, I haven't even seen Death Valley and I'm not interested. It's so dumb how they were like "both parts are connected" and by the end from what I heard they didn't promise that.

Such an awesome detail of Red Tide is the fact that the daughter was trying to learn Paganini on violin. Because of his absolutely insanely difficult pieces on violin, Paganini is probably one of the first people in modern lore to have “sold his soul to the devil” in exchange for incredible earthly talents and benefits. His playing was so far superior to other players at the time that he was believed by many to be guided by the hand of satan himself in order to produce the otherworldly, never-before-heard types of compositions that he created. Some even went as far as saying that they saw satan himself standing behind Paganini onstage and guiding his bow as he played. But yeah, it was just cool to see her trying to learn to play what was basically the OG of “devil’s music” on her instrument and only succeeding once she gave in to that Faustian bargain, thus selling her soul. That particular song choice is just such a great inclusion on behalf of the writers. Totally spot-on, and everything has a meaning.

Best seasons for me are Asylum, Coven, 1984, Apocalypse, and Roanoke. Double Feature had so much potential to be the best or one of the best but then episode 6 happened. It’s best to split the season because Red Tide with the exception of the finale was darn good. 1. Asylum 2. Coven 3. 1984 4. Apocalypse 5. Red Tide 6. Roanoke 7. Cult 8. Freak Show 9. Murder House 10. Hotel 11. Death Valley (Probably not going to revisit this season ever because it felt pointless and unfinished)

Coven is still my favorite to this day! Murder house, asylum, freak show, are also my favorites. One of my new favorites is nyc! I saw a lot of people complain about that season but I loved it! A true American horror story! 1984 and apocalypse were great as well. I actually love all of them, except for the double feature and Roanoke. I hated Roanoke but I watched it again and it grew on me a little bit but I still don't like it.

the flaw with Death Valley is the ending. It should have taken an additional minute or two with a future vision, show the world populated with aliens and humans evading and plotting defense of survival (sort of like the Invasion Of The Body Snatchers)

I went into Double Feature fully expecting Death Valley to be my favorite part because I love aliens and space, and it was my favorite part…until halfway through the first episode when it switched to the present day story. Up until that I really enjoyed the stylistic approach the 50’s story took, almost resembling a 50’s alien invasion B-movie, and I was really looking forward to more of that. But come the present day story and I just could not get into it. The way Ryan Murphy wrote the main characters was like he was creating caricatures of people, they just didn’t feel real at all and I ended up not caring what happened to them. It ultimately killed my enjoyment of the past segments of the story when they did come back, since I knew that we’d just be jumping right back to the present day story at some point. I would definitely like to see Ryan Murphy attempt a full season 20th century period piece that stylistically resembles the films of the era the story takes place in though.

Red Tide was partially influenced by Lovecraft's "The Shadow over Innsmouth", I strongly believe. So, Murphy gets partial credit but he used the material in a creative way. Does anyone else see the Lovecraft connection?

I only recently caught up on Double Feature and I will say, one of the most unsettling concepts (thought weirdly goofy in presentation) things I think the show has done is making Kendal just an organic baby machine. Something really did like a pinch and twist to my gut about that. Kind of how the Cybermen aren't necessarily as scary as the Angels in Dr. Who, but they definitely make me feel a certain unease with the violent merging of mechanical and organic. But that big bulbous head did take away from the deeper horror of it and seemed clearly to accommodate her actual head. Still lop off your head and just use your reproductive organs now seems like a social commentary just a few months early on Murphy's part.

Ik what you mean, the end of asylum was so rewarding bc the characters were developed and got conclusions that made sense for them. These characters were so bland and honestly annoying. Well that’s the thing Ryan M only wrote 3 episodes out of the whole season. Episode 1&2 of Red Tide and the finale of Death Valley with 3 other writers. He barely even directed this season. He wasn’t very much apart of the season tbh as he was also filming ACS, Monster, and other projects all at the same time.

The standard Ryan Murphy stuff was all there, of course, but there were so many unbelievable occurrences, unbelievable dialogue, unbelievable murders in full public places. Every few minutes we got someone saying the writer of the season was 'under-rated' or 'genius'. It just was all so hard to watch.

I think the child was intentionally psychopathic from the start when she was counting roadkill for fun, so it makes sense for her to be a psychopath and main antagonist at the end too. She seemed like she never cared about her family and even though it might’ve been a little on the nose, child psychopathy is real so yeah.

i really agree with ryan murphys pacing problems and his bad endings!! i really hate how sometimes the second last episodes of a season would be an amazing ending episode but ryan murphy has to screw it up by adding the final episode. like in murder house, i thought the last episode was rlly unnecessary and not as good as the rest of the season

I gave up right before the red tide finale. Idk. I didn't hate it but it just didn't feel like it was worth my time. I'll admit I was really looking forward to mermaids which is kinda my fault for overhyping it.

I like all of his endings except season 8. I like how in every season the show never comes to a complete end and the torture keeps going on. The murder house and hotel will always have ghosts and will always keep adding ghosts.

I completely agree, Red Tide was super compelling (until the end), but Death Valley was at best kind of goofy camp, it should have been one of the shorts and then Red Tide could have been it.

i think the season was overall underwhelming. my biggest problem was the underdeveloped stories and characters in both parts. great ideas with underwhelming executions and unsatisfying endings in both parts of the stories. aside from season 6 this was the only other season that got me losing interest in it unfortunately i feel like ahs is definately running out of momentum at this point (and needs to end soon before becoming embarassingly undercooked)

I had no idea it was supposed to be a double feature until death valley started playing. By the time I was starting to like Red Tide it was ending. I didn't like death valley and I even came back the week following the finale for another episode bc I didn't realize it ended lol. 5/10 season for me

I really really enjoyed Red Tide, and I do wish it was the full season. The setting (finally outside Cali, no offense), the score, atmosphere, the acting, Sarah Paulson shouting “F*cker!” all the time was just beautiful to see😂🥰 I also loved seeing Lily Rabe as a main cast like she deserves! yeah the finale wasn’t the best, but after rewatching Red Tide as a binge, I actually don’t mind the finale. Death Valley was interesting, I loved the black and white segments, but didn’t like the main 4 friends in modern day, the abducted ones were kinda meh and didn’t care for them. DV wasn’t bad, but I felt they could made the first 2 episodes of season 2 of AHStories about DV (yes, there’s another season coming😅). I’m glad you at least somewhat enjoyed this season! I was a bit worried lol

@@pookeywan I know what you mean, but I’m tired of them just filming in California, as it starts to look the same to me. Yes, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, and Red Tide are the only seasons filmed in different states. And also yes, Cult and Roanoke take place in different states but they’re still filmed in Cali. I want to see some other state’s representations. Coven and Freak Show were both filmed in Florida, and Asylum and Red Tide both were filmed in Massachusetts, and both take place in that state. I want variety of filming locations, bring us out to the Midwest, or the Pacific Northwest would be stunning. Something unique. But that’s why I like Red Tide so much, as it’s a different setting (oceanside winter) and it brought a whole different vibe to that part. That’s all I want😭😭😂

I see a lot of comments blaming Ryan Murphy for the bad story telling and writing of this season. Yet he actually wasn’t really involved in this season as much as fans think. He only wrote 3 episodes and *didn’t direct any of the episodes this season* Still I don’t use this as an excuse for an underwhelming season. I think he’s stretch to thin with other projects. I blame some of the other writers for a bad season.

I think this season is the perfect encapsulation of the show as a whole. You have the super serious first half with dark humor which is indicative of s2,4,6,7. And then the second half which is super zany and out there and campy indicative of 1,3,5,9. AHS has always kind of been 2 shows, so splitting it up like this really represents the whole series.

Great review! Yeah I’m surprised Red Tide didn’t overtly connect with Hotel and Death Valley didn’t connect with Asylum at all. But I agree overall this double feature was a success! I’d like to see some of the characters from Death Valley come back in other seasons.

Loved 1,2,3,4,5, hated 6,7, liked 8 okay, hated 9, loved 10. Maybe getting back to good stuff? I felt more of the unexpected in this past season like the original seasons. I actually really enjoyed season 10. Which is refreshing after a somewhat downward spiral IN MY OPINION. I really enjoyed both parts of double feature.

I actually loved red tide. After I watched episode one I just kept thinking about it all week. I love the aesthetic, setting, the concept of science and creativity together, vampires, and the pale people were fucking creepy. Additionally, as a vegetarian, a lot of the meaty scenes did seem kind of ''horrific'' I guess in that it successfully grossed me out. Meanwhile, death valley was.... weird. I liked all of the historical scenes but all of the new parts just seemed too random and uncomfortable in a bad way.

I find it interesting how literally nobody found the connections from the first story, and the second feature story. I instantly understood the aliens on the second half of the season was the chemist. But how she became the Alien overlord , the chemist eventually became so intelligent in learning the chemicals and biology that she was making herself more and more smarter from her pills in the first half of the season. So she became that hybrid alien and understanding that there's something she needs finding with a particular offspring. And then she is still drinking blood, from app those babies they were going through. How don't anyone see the similarities? Also, the little girl Alma, could been around doing something, I'm not sure on that. But I'm convinced that the little brother of hers. Was that smooth talking suite wearing leader guy. The one that absolutely loves the president's wifes Brownies. Remember at the end of red tide, they were talking bout owning the future. They weren't lying. But in the process .they had to go back to the past to future part 2! JK, but seriously though, they learned time travel and became the aliens. See for me, after watching the first half of the season I had no clue it was a double feature season so when the second half played I literally thought it was continuing off of the red tide season I got the whole season was all one story and just drastically change speed on the story is All I thought was going on. but yeah I thought the whole season the same characters and just drastically changed the story half way through, like I said. What doés anyone think about this?. It's also kind of hard to describe examples of showing the connections and it's like easier for me to verbally sit here and describe the connections then typing it. But I really do feel like the double feature was actually connected all the way through. I was just being sneaky to everyone.

I made videos on all the episodes of this season & I can’t agree more about struggling to get through the end of Death Valley. It’s such a bummer because they obviously can create richer or complex characters (Elizabeth Taylor from Hotel, Mickey and Karen in Red Tide, any character Lange played, etc) so it baffles me how they can create these empty husks of characters like in Death Valley. I really wish it just continued Red Tide (without Alma though hahaha)
