The most unforgivable sin is the bending in this movie. It was a huge pull of the show and it drove most of the action! So Why does it take like 7 guys to lift one tiny rock? 7 earthbenders could have easily flipped a tank upside down on its head! The bending is sooooo bad! And why nerf the firebenders?! Part of the reason they were so powerful was because they could summon it anywhere and anytime. They didn’t NEED a fire source to bend!

Shyamalamadingdong didn't watch past the first season. If he kept on going, he would've known why Firebenders were able to bend without a "source". Few honest statements. When they introduced Ozai, it took me a while to realize that it was really him. He was so different from the Dark Side Mark Hamill, that I didn't even figure out it who the guy was untill after it was all over. The fact that they cut out Aang "merging" with the Ocean Spirit was an unforgivable sin. That scene was one of the absolute highlights of the entire show, even though the Koizilla looked kinda goofy. But even so, just to see something so massive and majestic, with the entire tribe bowing down to it in reverence, and Aang being granted the power of the Ocean and unconsciously going completely nuclear on the Fire Nation, not even allowing them to retreat, and traveling through water in a glowing pool, and the Ocean killing Zhao in retaliation... it was all an incredible moment in cinematic history. To change it all up just for Aang lifting a giant wall of water... Firebenders being reliant on pre-existing sources of fire was also stupid as hell. Shaym covered up most of it, but it also makes the cartoon Fire Nation look incompetent in comparison: cartoon Sozin's Comet allows the firebenders to go 1-100 really damn quick, or in cases like Ozai and Azula, 1-300. In the film it is downplayed to them simply being able to produce fire from nothing. If that kind of power would allow them to conquer the world, that makes the cartoon fire nation look useless, because that is the power they possess passively. I'll admit, Iroh's reaction to the death of the Moon was by far cooler in the film (in the cartoon, he just throws some fire and beats some Stormtroopers up), but to a cartoon watcher, it just makes for taking something, spit polishing it, and then calling it new and improved. It was a stupid move. The bending itself. In the cartoon, it is decently fast paced, dynamic, and not overly flashy, but still awesome. In the film, it takes a short dance to lift and move something. Hell, even Toph decides that the best first lesson for Aang would be to move a rock, merely because of how simple and straightforward it would be. And yet, in film, it is incredibly slow and drawn out, making you think that people who fail to avoid it are simply incompetent, because anyone who isn't blind would see it coming from a mile away. Hell, even some people who are blind would see it, becuase seismic sense is a thing for the earthbenders. They essentially went from elemental telekinesis to wii remotes with a lag. The film shows Azula as being almost sadistically unstable. In the cartoons, she was almost perpetually calm and collected, and so deliciously evil, only ever momentarily losing her cool on several occasions.
@inciniumz46713 жыл бұрын
Sigh. This movie really, really, really bites. It's as if Shyamalan was trying to be as boring as he possibly could, only taking liberties when they wouldn't make sense. I swear, he really is a talent bender, capable of sucking talent out of the best actors, reducing them to nothing.

While watching the show I never felt like the characters were inconsistent. Both Sokka and Katara have the "I know better" attitude which depending on the circumstances can push them to act rash or careful. Sokka is usually distrustful (Jet, Aunt Wu) of other people and tries to be the chief of his "tribe" (trying to stick rigidly to his invasion plan), but will happily do dumb things if it makes sense in his mind (drinking cactus juice, eating slime from the wasps' nest) or if it makes him feel special (sword training). Katara often thinks she knows what's best for the people around her, on some occasions it pushes her to act motherly and lash out on her friends when they don't do as she says (arguing with Toph about her contributions to the group in se2, disapproving of the scams), on others it compels her to make decisions without thinking if she feels like someone's well-being is in danger (breaking Aang out of ice, helping out the fire nation village). However both are capable of self-reflection and will to go out of thier comfort zones when they feel guilty (Sokka apologizing to Suki and other Kyoshi Warriors, Katara deciding to pull a scam with Toph).

7:53 - 9:46 You're not wrong, but I don't think you're giving the show enough credit. Part of why the show works (IMO) is that while the characters aren't always consistent, a lot of those inconsistencies make sense in context, because none of them are even out of their teens yet and are having to take on way more responsibility than kids should ever have to. Thus, a lot of these breaks can be seen as the characters switching between how the situation requires them to act in a way that makes perfect sense in-universe: they're responsible and adult when they feel they have to be but then will act like normal kids when they aren't under as much pressure. Kitara is _trying_ to be the nurturing and responsible one but if something gets under her skin she can and will react emotionally, and she can be extremely stubborn - the scam episode and the water scroll episode from the first season both show her as trying to take on a mantle of responsibility, but then discarding it out of a desire to be liked and frustrations at her own inadequacies, respectively. Sokka is an even more interesting case because of how consistent his inconsistency is: in the opening episodes he's very much trying to be a responsible, savvy leader because his status in the tribe requires it of him. He's still snippy and sarcastic, but he is very much trying to be a smart, responsible leader. Once it becomes clear that Aang is directing the group, he loosens up considerably, but is still usually the one trying to keep them on-task, even if he's not being totally poe-faced about it. However, he's also prone to dropping the act when he wants to do things _he_ wants to do. On the other hand, the sword master episode kinda sucks for a lot of different reasons, including the ones mentioned. I dunno if this is so much a defense of the series as it is an attempt to explain why I never really found it questionable, but it's what I came up with on reflection.

What I find embarrassing is when people get so wrapped up in their smug perception of superior intelligence over any badly written movie they betray stupidity by singling out scenes for ridicule that were obviously ridiculous on purpose. The Happening was supposed to be scary: it's not; but I've seen people criticize the "Mark Wahlberg talks to fake plants" scene, by showing skepticism or outright denying that it is supposed to be funny: it is. It may very well be the only scene in the movie that was intended to be funny, for all I know, but it is so obvious that if you ever once questioned it then you are not as smart as you think you are. Of course this is different from thinking the scene was not funny regardless, which I shouldn't have to say either but, this is the internet after all.

Yes, but the fact he happened to be there on the day Aang thawed out is plot convenience. I don’t think it’s a big deal, though. Stories often begin because of some huge coincidence, especially when a character just happens to be at the right place at the right time. I think plot convenience only becomes a problem when it used constantly throughout the story, and whole arcs are impossible without it.
@LadyJen134 жыл бұрын
An important thing to remember in regards to the show "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is that everything in the show that happened was to some degree implied to have happened for a reason beyond just because. Zuko being nearby Aang's location when he was found was supposed to imply that Zuko's destiny was intertwined with Aang's. Of course; Zuko interpreted this sign to mean that he was meant to capture the Avatar to "restore his honor". The whole part of higher purpose is better elaborated after Book 1 in the show, and Book 1 of the show better illustrates the function of higher powers than that awful movie.

@@futurestoryteller well the thing is, I don't think it was ever arbitrary, as most of the time, katara did something impulsive because she felt it was the right thing to do, but other times, she could be a bit selfish and indulge in her own desires. I don't think this is necessarily inconsistency, but more so reality, as people generally want to do the right thing, but can have moments of weakness, selfishness, impulsiveness, jealousy, and give into peer pressure. Just because the characters don't necessarily fit in these neat little personality boxes doesn't make them badly written, it just makes them more complicated. And this can be true for most of the other characters as well. Pretty much all the examples you brought up of Sokka and Katara acting "out of character," are actually motivated by an established weakness in their personalities (in the show). For Katara it's the very desire you mention (being the group mom) that compels her to act impulsively for the sake of others. When she sees suffering her goodwill overtakes the common sense she would normally display. Because now she's not in a position where only her group's lives are in immediate danger if they expose themselves. This obviously isn't always smart, but acting like it's inconsistent with what we know about her isn't really true. Same with Sokka and his insecurity. And his "wasting time" most often doesn't conflict with the schedule he already established for the group. It also doesn't place them in positions where they could easily and immediately be exposed (like other characters sometime suggest). It doesn't really have much to do with not being a bender, but rather just being seen as useless in general by comparison. The only example where I can understand your frustration is Katara pulling off a scam. And even that still has some buildup in an earlier scene where she and Toph unwittingly get their home life backstories exposed to the other. Motivating Katara to put aside what she'd normally do in an earnest attempt to get closer to her friend. It still definitely exaggerates her behavior and could have been handled better, but it's not like the writers of the show fell asleep as you imply. Sorry for the nitpicking. I'll return to you making fun of this garbage movie. EDIT: Convenience for the sake of starting the plot isn't an issue. You could call pretty much every beginning to a story "stupid" by this logic. Without an unlikely (not impossible) event to kickstart everything, there's essentially no story to be told. Convenience for the sake of moving it forward is.

8:01 it seems odd that people have this conception that characters must behave like robots in order to stay in character. "Ah, you're the level headed serious one, that means if you ever have a silly moment, you're out of character and are poorly written!" Do you see how silly that sounds? No one in real life acts 100% in accordance with your conception of who they are. No one in real life acts 100% in accordance even with their own conception of themselves. For a character to truly be out of character, they have to to against what has been established as core values or traits for them. The best example I can think of is Luke in TLJ. We know him as hopeful, optimistic, determined, and loyal to his friends and family. He is none of those things when we meet him in TLJ. That is out of character and with no sufficient explanation as to why. That's the kind of departure from character that really matters. And even so, what really makes it bad writing is the absence of a reason this character has changed so drastically. A selfless character can break their characterization and act in a selfish way if it's adequately supported by events that lead them to that point.The examples you provide aren't major character deviations, but even so, they are explicable and supported in the show. Sokka feels insecure about his usefulness to the group, so he tries to find a way to be more useful. Katara, a 14 year old girl, is frustrated that she's seen as a mother hen and senses resentment from the others so she overcompensates and it ends up causing trouble. I can't really see these as going against their characters in a meaningful way, even if they weren't explained. There are absolutely cases where even small departures would be bad, Vader telling Luke a fart joke in the middle of their duel for example, but I don't see that. Which isn't to say Avatar has the best character writing or whatever, but it's pretty good overall.

When it comes to the race talk in Avatar, I usually can't care any less than I already do. They're cartoons, and they don't make race an issue in the show, so it doesn't matter to me. In the movie, however, M. Night shyamalan clearly made the conscious effort to have the characters attempt to accurately reflect real life asia by changing the pronunciation of the names. To then have them portrayed by non asian actors seems like double talk to me. It can't be both so important to reflect real Asian heritage that you'd change their names, and then not important enough to hire Asians, right?
@fattiger69574 жыл бұрын
Hollywood isn't a fan of putting Asian people in prominent roles. That's why Lucy Lieu was the token Asian girl in any Hollywood movie for 15 years. They are willing to bring Hong Kong stars like Jackie Chan and Chow Yun Fat over for a few movies, but they never let them shine and end up paying the American actors more (Chris Tucker got paid more than Jackie F***ING Chan) and never allow the Asian man to romance white women. All that isn't woke bs. That's how Hollywood operates when it comes to Asian people. Even in these woke times, the only skin colours that matter in Hollywood is white and black and everyone else may as well not exist.
@luckyducky78194 жыл бұрын
@@fattiger6957 The issue with representation is all Hollywood's fault; I think I've been saying that for years on this account. The lack of female representation (for an example) is, at the very least, mostly the fault of companies not wanting it hire women, but then people want to blame things like "toxic masculinity" and all of this nonsense for it. Its a shame. In this case, the blame lies specifically on M. Night and the rest of the crew not hiring asians after making changes to pay respect to asians. IMO, if they didn't imply asian heritage was important, I'd be fine with the casting.
@MaylocBrittinorum4 жыл бұрын
Idk, even if Shyamalandingdong didn't want to show his woke credentials with the name thing, it would still have been better that they casted East Asian actors: the entire show takes its inspiration on the cultures of China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, etc., and having everything being Asiatic except the actual actors would be odd, to say the least. It's like if in LoTR there were no European-looking folks in the very Anglo-Saxon scenario Tolkien had imagined. Also, greater representation matters.
@luckyducky78194 жыл бұрын
@@MaylocBrittinorum It'll always be better to showcase the actual race of the people in something based on it. However, I was saying how I personally wouldn't have minded it if they didn't make a big deal with the names. If you aren't trying to make woke media, I don't think you have to play by woke rules because those aren't the rules you're claiming. I'm making a game right now, and while I'd like to hire my own people (african americans), at the end of the day, I need to hire people to get the job done. If that means a white person playing a black character's voice, then I'd disagree with any backlash. However, if I boasted my company being about 100% representation, 100% authentic African roots, I think I'd deserve any backlash that I'd get. And greater representation matters lots. I blame Hollywood for refusing to cast diverse actors.

I know I’m late to this and therefore my thoughts are pretty irrelevant, but I rewatched the show as soon as it dropped on Netflix and I discovered your channel recently and was excited to find this gem of a video. On the topic of the characters flipping personalities, I think it’s easy to decipher once you look a little deeper into their characters. Sokka is smart and clever, but at heart he’s kind of a hopeless goofball. The reason he tries so hard to be practical and serious is because he’s ingrained with a feeling of obligation and leadership towards the group from watching his father leave to fight in the war. He has a kind of “man of the house” mentality that clashes with his goofy personality. Katara has something similar with being motherly, especially since she looked after many of the children left in the southern water tribe. Katara, though, is also shown to be stubborn and extremely prideful, so when she feels her skills or values are being challenged, she will act impulsively and emotionally. I think that’s how we were meant to interpret it. Also, despite the gravity of the story, I believe the characters all range in age from 10-17. This is a common age of being torn between who you want to be, and who you actually are in the moment. Wanting to give off an air of maturity that you may not readily possess (and may not ever possess, but children don’t know that you don’t suddenly wake up and gain extreme common sense one day).

So, the Avatar cartoon, uses more Western phonetics for the Asian names. The movie changed this to be more Eastern. In Japanese, Iroh would be pronounced 'Ee-roh', not 'Eye-Row'. Japanese A's have an 'Aw' sound, unlike the more common 'eh' sound it makes in English. O's are pronounced like the O in 'OK', so Sokka's name would sound like 'So-kah' instead of 'sock-ah'. Still, considering the audience for these movies would be fans of the show, it makes no sense to make the names have a more accurate pronunciation, over having it be like the shows.

I think the reason the kids personalities change and they do seemingly erratic things is because that's what they are. Kids. Well teens. Aang was 12. Katara and sokka were 15 or 16 I think. They are insecure about their place in the group, they make stupid decisions based of irrational emotions, they try to be better but still make mistakes and some of that immumaturity shines through at times. I think its less of having characters act in ways the episode demands and more of a story about young people with faults who don't act like Mary janes all the time because that's not how people are. Maybe in a perfect story they will always act in accordance to their preset handful of Character Traits. But this is a story about imperfect, fucked up teenagers thrust together and into the responsibility of saving the entire world. They won't act rationally 100% of the time, and I believe it adds to the realism and relatability of the story, rather than detracts.

My main issue with this is comparing someone purposely change their behavior to be reckless in order to be seen as "cool" to her reckless friends being the same as literally changing their cautious nature every time the camera shifts in a movie where that is spammed. That's not inconsistent for the plot, that's the normal amount of inconsistencies that humans regularly display especially as developing children. While the other IS inconsistent for the plot, among the NUMEROUS inconsistencies such as something as simple as the names and roles. They can't even say words right let alone keep the plot straight.
@kierangorman30524 жыл бұрын
I disagree with what you said in regards to Katara and Sokka being inconsistent with their maturity as I would argue that since they are teenagers it is realistic to depict them as having a shifting level of seriousness as they transfer from being children to young adults. Additionally it is not uncommon for even adults to be at odds with themselves in real life so I feel that it actually adds more depth to their characters for them to be portrayed as complex and complicated people.
