Fun thing, I have to learn metric, & pen & paper by so I can write down the name of some of your plants. Lol. Like eggplant 🍆 🤪 l think we would have been fast friends in a different lifetime. Good luck. I can't believe you don't have 100,000 subscribers already. You certainly deserve it. 👏

Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Life's too short. I've 3 buddlejas in my garden that give me endless enjoyment watching the butterflies and bee's. This is the time for changes in the garden or allotment, I'm altering the garden to grow my vegetables at home as I had to give up my allotment due to health. I always enjoy watching your vlogs.

Surely to "chitt" or not to "chitt" is academic since your potatoes will "chitt". What you should do is control this by storing them in the cool light place. If not as you said you will end up with the long spindly shoots, like a sack of worms! Try sorting that out for planting.

I'm a chitter not a quitter. Pink fir apple should be very knobbly and produces all sorts of lewd offspring. There is a modern variety called Anya , a cross between Pink fir and Desiree, which looks similar but not as knobbly , so easier to peel . Anya is a second early so you might be able to find out if they're selling fakes if they mature ahead of schedule.

Chitting seed potatoes is the only way ro go. Absolutely nothing to lose and so many yummy potatoes to gain. Next season may I suggest you also try Pentland Javelin. An early potato bred and developed by Jack Dunnett who also bred Kestrel second earlies. Although he has now moved on to that great potato field in the sky, you may enjoy reading about him, start by googling his name.

Hi Jessie, Totally agree regarding chitting the spuds. I always chit mine, can't help myself, its in my blood. The good part is that you get to choose what size of of spuds you want by rubbing off some of the chits for larger spuds or keeping the chits on and growing smaller spuds. Loved the pottery lesson, reminds me of my school days, you've got it down to a fine art. I like your grow light set up, it looks the business.

I believe in Plan B: It looks like you could write the potato variety right on the cardboard tray with magic marker - in case the markers get lost. Also, give those trombontinos to your hens - especially the seeds and guts. Natural wormers. They will hollow out that shell to paper thin.

I chit potatoes because I like to be sure each one will grow before I plant them. That way I'm not worrying. Similar to sprouting seeds before planting. Puree and bottle the tromboncino squash. I don't know what they taste like. Vegetable marrow squash puree is a good replacement for potato in creamy soups. Also good with milk and sugar for a desert.

@@RichWoods23 pumpkin pie uses pumpkin or butternut squash puree, eggs, spices, sugar and milk. Just puree sugar and milk will give an apple sauce type consistency. 😋

The clay in the area is great for turning. Ours is Kings Pottery , our daughter has her own shop. Crystal King Pottery, she started making pots when she was 5 years old. We make dish’s of all kind, but we are known for are folk art face jugs. It was fun watching you turn.

But they only sold minimum of 3kg on some and some only 10kg.

I saw some Caledonian Pearl potatoes at my local garden centre yesterday and remembered you saying they were good. I was really tempted - they look really nice on the front of the pack with their pale appearance - but I had decided I would do Charlotte vs Nicola this year as I've never grown either. Up to now I've only grown International Kidney (AKA Jersey Royals) for new potatoes but I want something more productive. Also I don't think International Kidney are as good as they were when I was younger. Used to taste better - my Mum who is from Jersey always says that too. Think it's something to do with them not using sea weed anymore, so I want to try other varieties. I could no way do all three as I also have 3 main crops and I won't have the containers or compost for 6 potato varieties. So it's Nicola vs Charlotte this year and next year I will try Caledonian Pearl if I can still get them locally.

I'm a chitter too and same - it's not really about them needing it or not, it's about the sense of anticipation they produce sitting there on the windowsill. There's so little else to be doing in winter and if there's space, why wouldn't you want to see your little potatoes coming to life and heralding in the start of Spring! Good advice on the buddleias - I've noticed a couple of seedlings pop up in the fruit tree guilds so I think I'll relocate where they can act as a privacy screen and then do the same and coppice them. Looking forward to ep 200!

Potatoes! ❤ Last year’s harvest was great, but a bag of potatoes was forgotten long enough to start sprouting so I’ll be using them for 2024 growing season. Yes, I CHIT but I chop my potatoes to have 2-3 eyes per seed starter allowing the cut side to scab over. I plant in March, but this year I’m doing more in buckets than the beds to make space for more plants. When you prune you plop things on the ground rather than put them right in a bucket for dumping elsewhere - save time and your fingers. Pavers in the fruit cage - do you worry about pests hiding underneath?

Hi Jessie. The tin foil issue you're right about is when you are using high power grow lights such as HPS or Metal Halide. For your little LEDs you'll be fine. One piece of advice if you don't mind me saying. Move your lights much much closer to your plants. The lights you are using are very low powered and the distance they are from the plants is causing them to stretch as there isn't sufficient lumen levels reaching the plants and they're reaching for the light. Loved your pottery work, that was awesome watching you make those bowls, such skills. Wow 199 episodes, and I've watched every single one! Stu

Hello Jessie, I am so excited we do not have any snow on the ground anywhere today. Last year by today we had 55 inches of snow compared to 7 inches this year so far. Tomorrow we will be 55° F or 12.7° C!!! It is just crazy. I am already adding up the reduction of cost for the winter heating bills. Can not wait to see how much we are saving this winter. I am fighting to not get excited about starting seeds knowing in two weeks we could have 20 inches of snow. We have not had winter yet we did have a few days of daytime highs -23° C for a couple of days otherwise very mild winter. I am very interested in getting some of the Cima di Rapa seeds I have wanted these for several years. I found I can buy some Italian seeds locally so I am getting them. Potatoes: I have all my potato harvest and all the ones that start to sprout will then chit themselves until the day I take them and plant them for the new crop. I do not buy any potato seeds as I just watch them and eat all the good ones and let the rest volunteer to be the seeds for next year. We get 50 pounds every years this is 10 to 15 years now. So I do not know if I chit or not I just plant them and laugh as all the other folks lose their minds at what others are doing. Cya next time take care.
