I adopted the Starch Solution Diet three yrs. ago: I lost 20 lbs., my cholesterol went from 273 to 176 (no meds). Sugar level was in pre-diabetic range, now normal. Since I feel satiated (not hungry, after eating potatoes, lentils, corn with veggies, as much as I want), I feel this is sustainable and long-term. One of the best things I’ve done for myself, thank you, Dr. McDougall!

@@louisepotts1806 Louise, this is a good question, as in my case, it was not immediate. First year, cholesterol went down to 210, second year plateaud (I was frustrated, but kept going, as other benefits outweighed this), then at end of third year, finally hit 176! Apparently, some people go down fast (in mths), but about 2%, go down slowly, like me. But I’m so glad I stuck with it, as my mother now has late-onset dementia (she’s 88) & a vegan diet w/ normal cholesterol levels has decreased my chances of getting it significantly (apparently 50%+).

@@sk.n.9302 , Thank you so much for your reply. I go for a cholesterol retest next Wednesday. It's only been six months for me. My original number was very close to 300. I also carry the gene for the potential early onset of dementia. I am encouraged by your story. I won't give up if my numbers haven't moved as much as I hoped in these six months. If I can achieve anything closer to 150 I would be elated. I dread having to go in a statin. 🙂

We are pescetarians that grow about 95% of our yearly food supply in one of our 7 (10,000 SF total) garden plots, greenhouses, etc., here on our mini-farm/homestead in East TN USA. "Tators" take up one full plot (about 1,200 SF,) usually red-skinned potatoes. We mainly eat them for breakfast, about 4 times a week and love them! We are very healthy and happy! @@ginac7235 I learned here on KZbin how to grow them. Here's a good tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goHRo3V8i892a6M .There are many! I used 5 gallon grow bags from Amazon plus one 10 gallon container. 2 seed potatoes per bag and 4 in the container. Left 2 sprouts on each potato. Layered: 4" compose, taters, 4" compost. Wait for sprouts to appear then add 4" compost and so on. I live North of Seattle and grew Red Norland, Latona (White), Russian Banana and Russet Norkotah. All have outstanding flavor. This is my first year growing and I'm surprised at the success of them all. Used G&B Organics, Harvest Supreme compost. Simple leaf compost works great too. Red Norland was most prolific. Adding purple next year. And using larger bags. Enjoy!

I started eating more potatoes after watching this, and now I finally realized why I have kept them to a minimum over the years and why I usually only eat them in the evening. Potatoes set up a craving for more food. It must have something to do with blood sugar, as starch turns to glucose in the body. I get the same problem with corn and peas. I like to make a soup out of organic cooked peas or corn while they are still hot from boiling, by blending them using my Nutribullet machine. I definitely noticed a spike in blood sugar after consuming them and then an extreme blood sugar drop after about an hour or so. Consuming them with other foods does not change that, at least for me anyway. Just sayin'
@martykerns3802

It’s the blender. Blending anything will cause the food to be absorbed into the body’s system way faster. Hence, the hunger cycle because the stomach empties out quickly when food is blended.

The problem today is that all grains and potatoes (and other foods) are saturated in herbicides and pesticides (particularly Round up) which is causing so many of our autoimmune diseases. I will only eat and grow organic (and no wheat) for that reason. It is hard to find organic corn as 90% is GMO and grown with glyphosate. Organic eating is costly? In the Northern States of America, the 1800's Agricultural Census showed what the earlier people were eating and growing, Most had typical small farms with a small diversity of animals and a focus of Oats, Buckwheat, Corn and Hay for Feed. But everyone grew 1-2 acres of Potato's, and the bushels per acres are obviously much higher than the rest of what they grew. Hashbrowns and Eggs were on the Menu for sure. The first thing most poor people invested in were Chickens or a Milk Cow, than maybe a Sow to slaughter once a year. Animals were Equity in older times, no refrigerators and fresh food storage. Eggs, Milk, Butter, Cheese and limited Preserved meats like Salt Pork and Bacon, made up their animal products. Oatmeal, Buckwheat, Hominy, Cornmeal, Potatoes, Peas, Beans, and of course Bread was most of what they ate.

My 4 year old doesn't eat enough vegetables but he loves potatoes, I'm a lot less worried. I always feel inspired after listening to McDougal. The thing stomping me from going full vegan at the moment is mild food addiction. I can only go so long then have uncontrollable cravings for UPF crap. I think i may try a two week all potato, (and green smoothis ) diet, see how far I get.

It gets cheaper than that when you grow your own 👍 😁 grow them in pots , bags , garden beds , on top of the ground covered with straw or dry grasses , very easy and organic no pesticides. 🌱

I had the same experience of not liking meat when I was a kid. Did not like beef, pork or fish. Chicken was ok because we were allowed to put honey on it. Hot dogs were also good because we could put ketchup and mustard on them, and they came in that tasty bun. The first thing on my plate I always ate was the starch- the potato, rice, pasta, or bread.

My family grew up on starches. We couldn’t afford a lot of meat and the expense of salads. We ate hamburger in stews, mixed with rice or noodles, tomatoes were the primary salad veggie and lots of potatoes and beans.

As a potato loving vegan, I take it he's basically advocating for a high carb, low to no fat diet? I inadvertently was doing low fat, and I got very ill until I started integrating a healthy amount of fat.

It's a adequate fat starch based diet. It just seems low fat to the greasy hamburger, fries, chicken eating people of America. *Smiles*. He usually says something like you weren't eating enough fuel for your body and Fat has more energy/calories and it's what made you feel better.

@@Sam, thank you for saying this. He does advocate for a very low fat diet, but I think we’re all different. My genetics show I do well on both carbs and fat, and I smother my potatoes in full fat coconut cream. I do well on it, and it maintains my weight. I tried nothing but plain potatoes for 2 weeks. I didn’t enjoy it much (and I LOVE potatoes meals), and I started having a weird rash/eczema on my hands that cleared up once I brought fats back in. Potatoes only doesn’t work for me!

I stopped eating meat at 5 because I found out what meat was. I have been brought up on beautiful beautiful starch and I was pretty dang healthy, (apart from some skin issues that vanished after I cut out the dairy too). I only found out that "starch" is actually a whole category of food and that it's so vital to a diet. I fucking love starch.

Very interesting.. Here in Sweden for the last 3 years we have been growing about 10 or 12 varities of very colourful potatoes.. We get such a great harvest year on year.. We also save our seed potato..we also grow sweet potatoes and just about everything..there is literally zero inflation when you grow your own food and save seed..

I am a type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed later in life (in my 30s). I liked bread and roasted potatos, but I noticed something that I could not understand. I was hungry all the time. I felt like I had a painful hole in my stomach, but as I grew older I found out that eating protein was quite satisfying. I was extremely overweight. I began to eat bacon and other meats in small amounts and I noticed that I was not hungry. I sometimes forgot to eat. Long and short, l do not tolerate high carbohydrates as they spike my glucose levels. I do eat some legumes, but any simple carbs and I am thrown into a tailspin of hunger all-day
