POV SWAT Team Raids the WRONG House with Elderly Woman

An elderly woman's home was raided by police after she was suspected of making anonymous online threats against the Evansville police department and Chief Billy Bolin.
The 68-year-old woman, Louise Milan was in the house with her 18 year old adopted daughter when police shattered a glass door and burst in after throwing flash grenades inside.
Police came up empty-handed in the search for evidence about who had made the threatening posts but only after damaging Louise Milan’s house, handcuffing her and her adopted daughter and seizing their computers, according to a lawsuit that has been filed against the city of Evansville.
The FBI later arrested Derrick Murray, a suspected local gang leader who lived nearby in his mother’s house and was using his smartphone to access the Milan's unsecured wireless network.
City attorneys contend that the force used to execute the search warrant, was “objectively reasonable” and that officials are immune from liability.

This wasn't actually a mistake so to speak. The person who made the threats used the unsecured wifi connection that was registered to this house via a smartphone. They later catch the actual suspect. It is sad that these people were victims, but they are not police so much as they are victims of the actual criminal using their internet. My thoughts? Always have a Secured Wifi connection

There are SO many things wrong with this, I don't even know where to start, but the first is, how about even a SMALL amount of investigation before THIS amount of force? How hard would it have been to check this out prior to doing all of this. This warrant was not reasonable in any way shape or form. In this day and age of technology, so many other options were available, and quite honestly, easy enough to spoof someone's router regardless of it being unprotected or passworded. Wow, I just seriously hope this never happens at our house, I would never want my children to go through this, so I hope there is a lawsuit, and maybe this type of force will be thought out more before going forward. Sad.

Wow... just wow. If the facts are true the police detective didn't do their homework. It's easy enough to setup a survey unit to track this kind of thing, especially if we're talking open WIFI. Most competent law enforcement agencies should send a mobile survey unit in for a week (a computer in the trunk of a crap car on the curb unmanned that listens to those frequencies), collect the data and look at the MAC address of the individual device used (which they would've discovered and seen on another AP in the area which is a big red flag all by itself and triangulate the signal when it reconnects). Sounds like what they actually did was check the header in the email, did no homework or survey work and raided a house with almost no evidence. The officers preforming the raid aren't really responsible for the place their given to raid in this case, it's the fucktard who didn't investigate things and the empty headed judge who signed the warrant. Blame the right people, not the foot soldiers.

natastarz5 Never says they had the wrong house. Suspect was using the unsecured wifi network of the residence. When police trace the ip address from the threats it came back to that residence. They should have checked if the residence had an unsecured network before the warrant was issued.
