We get up close to the original costumes and helmets made for the 1995 Power Rangers movie--a true blast from our pop culture past. Prop Store has the costumes on display ahead of their upcoming Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction (December 1-2), and we get to examine their layered construction and hidden details to appreciate how these costumes were made and used in the film.

I loved the first PR movie from when I was a kid. So this makes me happy to see the OG costumes that the actors themselves/stunt performers wore from the actual movie. But also, kind of sad, that they haven't been kept in necessarily optimal conditions, while in the hands, of what I'm sure are various collectors' possessions, throughout all this time. Otherwise, I believe they'd be in much better condition overall than they currently are.

For 100 bucks it makes a great display piece, and if I wasn't someone with a lot of sensory and breathing challenges, I'd have no problem wearing it. Guess in that respect its hard for me to judge masks, but for a readily available retail helmet at the price toys r us sells em for, I'd find it hard not to recommend.

Full on American production my butt. It was shot in Australia, mostly around Sydney, and a lot of the props were made here as well. I met the prop maker at his house after it was filmed, and he had the buried monster skeleton from the beach scene, _in his lounge room_! Admittedly it was an open plan two story house, and the lounge room didn't have any rooms above it, so it had a two story roof. His company was called 2D/3D Inc. He did the 3D (real props you could pick up a d handle, not CD stuff), and his wife did the 2D (things like matt painting backgrounds, etc). Nearly got a job working for them, and could have worked on Dark City, but I lost contact with them..... 😭

These power ranger suits were made by Robert Burman, a really cool guy. I've spoken to him in the early facebook days and he gave me some great advice on getting into makeup effects. He told me to learn how to recreate real things first, not fantasy or sci-fi. So learn how to sculpt a tiger, or tree bark, anything in nature. Study anatomy of real creatures, how they move, etc. Everything in fiction is derived from reality. Power Rangers was, is, and always will be one of my favorite franchises. Thanks for the video!

Yeah, the metallic suits weren't the greatest, but at least they looked like the original ones. I'd rather they used them in the movie since the toys represented then anyway.

I know someone who still makes these suits he owns an original one. It's amazing how he can recreate what the production company did.

this is so sick. It's interesting to see some cosplay props finished to a higher standard than Hero props in films. of course the outside has worn after 25 years, but I mean more the inside
@SirMorNo
@SirMorNo 3 жыл бұрын
a lot of props, even cars such as one of the original DeLorean used in the back to the future films were left out in the elements for decades in the universal lot, until very recently where it was basically rebuilt. Some people go to great lengths to preserve such props or to recreate them such as prosthetic master Tom Sivanni for the Horror crowed
@Thermalions
@Thermalions 3 жыл бұрын
They only need to be good enough to look good on the screen. Time is money, so a production won't typically waste money overbuilding. Whereas some cosplay props/outfits have significantly more time put into them, partly a labour of love and they will get more up close scrutiny.

@@Thermalions oh for sure, any time not spent finishing the inside of a helmet that'll never be seen can be extra time spent on the main hero suit or something.

The old rubber and old spandex is so brittle that you would tear the suit. It would break apart before you even got it on. The suit was very tough and durable when it was first made, but today you would probably tear it apart with just your fingers with little effort. I've seen old costumes before. If you squeeze hard enough, they literally crumble apart in your hands like jello. They have no strength. The suit can't be be worn by anyone anymore. It literally is slowly falling apart.

I rewatched the movie at the beginning of this year and frankly... it’s not thaaat bad. Sure it’s far from perfect, the script is what it is, but it’s entertaining with a multitude of very memorable scenes. Awesome soundtrack. Stellar costumes.

Man, those costumes have not aged well... I remember seeing those costumes in PR material as a kid and they seemed to be made from leather. Back then I thought they kind of looked "kinky" and I didn't like it all that much. I wasn't old enough to be able to see the movie in cinemas and it's interesting to see them up close now... realising they are not made from leather AT ALL. :D

I like how the Yellow suit's got the variant headlights helmet paired with it. There were two different ones made. The headlights one shown here, and one more closer to the original Japanese Zyuranger helmet.

You could purchase replica suits online if you really want to. But there's no way to repair the suits. It's too old and the rubber literally crumbles apart in your hands like jello if you aren't careful. All you can do is just be careful with them and try to keep them in a dry environment. Or even a glass case.
