Do you not need to purge the air from the lines and manifold first?

To my knowledge, it is not necessary on a recreational rig. CO2, N2, and regular air all have similar performance in a shock. What you want to avoid is allowing any water vapor into the chamber which does not follow the ideal gas law and is more volatile than other gases. The small amount of water vapor at ambient pressures in the small volume of the air line is not enough to affect the shock in an appreciable way. Using compressed air without an air/water separator in a shock would introduce a larger volume of water vapor into the shock which can negatively affect performance.

I received confirmation from a shock tuner/builder that they typically don't bleed the air lines of ambient air as they have not found that the small amount of air makes an appreciable difference in performance.

If you dismantle parts of the shock yes, like changing caps on the bypass can. Normal refill, not needed. It was a debate one day in the FD pits.
