It was so sweet to learn that these “wahoos” are used in Prairie Dog language for “all clear/safe/good,” so everytime Poppy sees her poppa and hears him say her name, she’s like “SAFE GOOD!!” 😆🥰

The way her wahoo seems to be in response to her own name is almost like a little self-celebration - "I'm adorable and I know it."

It IS largely in response to her name because someone's calling to her and she's calling back. Someone says hi to her and she says hi back. You'll notice she sometimes also initiates it when she sees someone first but that doesn't get caught on camera all the time. I've seen some prairie dogs that weren't as enthusiastic about "yahooing" which is actually the term that Wildlife biologists use when identifying that behavior. I'm not sure how that translated to using the term "wahoo" for Poppy, but I think it's appropriate as it's her own special enthusiastic "yahoo". Also context matters because prairie dog language is that complicated.

He only has one I don't think he researched properly because he's also giving her sugar which is harmful to them because the mainly eat grass in the wild. Like guinea pigs you should have two. They get lonely.

@@MsScarletwings Several years ago, I visited a pet that was selling prairie dogs. When I asked about them, the owner said, it was take them as pets or let ranchers shoot them because cattle and horse break their legs when the trip in the burrows. And my ex brother in law grew up on a ranch in S. Dakota. It was a big family even to go out and shoot prairie dogs, just to leave their little bodies there to rot. They don't even eat them.

There are literally thousands of members in prairie dog communties, it's incredibly hard to understand how social animals they are. These animals have been reported to die in loneliness. Simply put, they shouldn't be kept as pets and if kept as pets, you should have at least two. The agriculture ministry of Germany has lined that the enclosure for three prairie dogs shouldn't be less than 20 square meters, that's a full size studio appartment. Each animal should mean at least one square meter more space both in inner and outer enclosure areas. This is why they are not allowed to be kept in small animal cages. The laws regarding animals and pets in some countries are only for leisure of the people.
