“Jesus Christ sees people deeply,” says Michelle Craig of the Young Women General Presidency. He sees the individual, their needs and who they can become. In her October 2020 general conference address, Sister Craig shares how each of us can see life and other people as Jesus Christ does.
“The more you understand your true identity and purpose soul deep,” she says, “the more it will influence everything in your life.”
To see others more deeply, she asks herself two questions: What is she doing that she should stop doing, and what is she not doing that she should start doing?
One day, shortly after reflecting on those questions, she felt prompted to put her phone away while standing in a grocery store check-out line. She then noted an elderly man ahead of her who apparently had only a cat for companionship. She engaged him in conversation, where he revealed it was his birthday.
“I don’t want to be like those in the parable of the good Samaritan who see a need and pass by,” she says.
Jesus Christ can give us eyes to see, even when it’s hard or we are tired or lonely. “Through His grace, He will increase our capacity,” she affirms. “With His help, we will see deeply.”

I was once in a queue at the grocery store. An old man in front of me had everything from the cheapest value range, he was then desperately going through his vouchers producing so many. My heart broke, he seemed poor and alone. So I said to him, “do you mind if I pay for your shopping today, I’ve only 3 mins left to complete a good deed for the day (not true but didn’t want him to feel bad)?”. He looked shocked and didn’t speak so I just handed my card to the cashier. I’ll never forget his face, he was so touched. I got so much more from it than he did. His shopping wasn’t expensive, but it taught me that there are many lonely people who need to feel love and God wants me to reach out to them, because God is love and we represent Christ when we take our covenants. People need to feel Christ’s love through our actions. ❤️

This reminds me of a lesson I learned a few years ago, when the Lord put me in a position to brighten someone's day, without me realizing it. I was in line at a restaurant, and got chatting with the lady in front of me. She told me about the really rough day she'd had at work. As we chatted, I got her to smile and laugh with me. I didn't realize until she thanked me on her way out, that the Lord had put me there to brighten her day. I learned then, how the Lord can easily put us where He needs us, even when we don't realize it, but it's up to us to make use of the opportunity. I could have just as easily remained silent, in my own little world. I'm so glad I looked up that day.

My wife Stephanie has this ability of “chit chat” with people/strangers… it constantly makes us late… and I’m afraid to admit it constantly irritates me… I realize after watching this video Heavenly Father has given her eyes to see and it’s something I need to better develop.

My children would get so upset with me because I would talk to anyone around me. Someone on the bus, a clerk at the store, complete strangers I come across. My kids would roll their eyes and I knew they were exasperated with me. I felt, at times, my relationship with my children was hurt by my need to connect to others. I hope someday they will understand that it was a need inside of me to talk to others, to share with others. None of the people I spoke to seemed annoyed by my talking to them, and I always felt I had made new friends out of them. Since the pandemic, no one is kind and open to talking to you. I have come across a couple of people who have expressed the same thing to me. How unkind the world has become and we thanked each other that we were able to connect and talk. It heartens your soul and brings cheer and happiness to share with others. I would be really unhappy if the world turns to unkindness and bitterness. I believe that attitude comes from Satan, and I follow Jesus Christ always!

I'm not a very religious person, and I'm not really sure what I believe, but the one thing that I've always known is that I believe that people aren't races. We aren't opinions. We aren't nationalities. We aren't political parties. We're people. No other division between us should matter.

I’m glad that cell phones exist, I just wish that people would have the discipline and wisdom in using them as a tool. Cell phones aren’t bad, our attitude in how we use or misuse them is what needs to be re-evaluated.

Even without phones we can find ways to become distracted and unaware. Cellphones definitely make things easier of course (though they're still highly useful for connecting us, making information readily accessible when it's needed, etc. if we use it right.) Learning to control the urge to look at our phones is only one step in the process of becoming less distracted and more aware of those in need and the rest of our environment.

Such a perfect message for today. We can't see ourselves or others as Christ sees us, if our heads are buried in our phones all the time. I know it's something I could improve on, especially whenever I'm around my children. Sunday has been a great day for our family to disconnect and re-center on what's most important.

The widow of Nain was such a work of compassion on the Savior's part. He went way out of his way to raise her son from the dead. When we joined the Church in 1971 there were three groups of people: converts, lifers, Wasatch Mormons. As converts we were banished to seven years in the nursery. Never went to Sunday School never went to Priesthood or Relief Society. I found out that Jehovah and Jesus Christ was the same person from a Jewish rabbi. He also told me what Elohim meant. Back then lifers did not talk to converts and would have the same answer to our questions: pray and read the scriptures. The concept that Christ looks at as individuals is a new concept to me and only started being taught about 15 to 20 years ago. My wife is an owner of a large business in Salt Lake and employs about 1500 people. She commutes every week from Texas to Salt Lake. Our decision not to move there was based on our first 30 years in the Church when Wasatch Mormons were so cruel and prejudice toward us. But now things are different. The Church no longer condones prejudice. We look forward to the future where people are individuals and not lumped into groups.

Loving others is hard for me. Not that generating feelings of compassion, sympathy, or empathy is something I cannot do. I can, quite deeply, surprisingly quickly and sincerely. It's that I get hurt easily. Not in the sense that others take advantage of me and emotionally abuse me. It's that tying yourself to another leaves you to hurt when they hurt. I suppose the answer is simple, I should also rejoice when they rejoice, and in that, magnify my own joy. We experience both good and bad for ourselves to better know the good... and so that good can exist at all. Growing love to emotionally bind oneself to another, or many others, is to magnify capacity, to both endure, but more importantly, revel.

This is refreshing. Don't see many churches teaching about being like Christ anymore. I am enjoying this channel and interested in knowing more about this church. By their fruits ye shall know them!

Hi Carolyn, thanks for your comment. Mormons or LDS Church members, properly referred to as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are Christian. We believe Jesus Christ is our Savior, we revere the Bible as the word of God, and we believe the Book of Mormon to be another testament of Jesus Christ. You or others interested can learn more about our beliefs here: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics/are-mormons-christian?lang=eng
