Im glad i found this. I suffer from crippling anxiety when trying to tank. I sit hovering over the join group button and not pushing it and just logging off instead because i cannot get myself to push that button. I like the tanking classes though and this anxiety is stopping me from enjoying the game. I know it will take me some time to get over this, but im glad i found this video.

One useful trick is to focus target your healer. You see a bold marker on your mini-map showing where the healer is, but also shows the frame and mana bar on your screen, as well as healer's target (usually). I move my focus frame closer to the middle of my screen so it's easier to see with peripheral vision.

Just found this and while it's from a few years ago it's still all good advice. I used to tank for years from Wrath when I started until around Siege of Orgrimmar in MOP. After that, I just got tremendous anxiety and even fear thinking of tanking because I only recently came back to the game at the very end of legion/start of BFA. Everything seems more go go go heavy now and people seem to be even less patient than ever before so it really makes me reluctant to give tanking a go again because I hate "failing" or feeling like I messed up, and people tend to be rude or unforgiving even if you say you haven't done the dungeon or you're new to tanking or haven't tanked in years, etc.

When I first started playing MMORPGs I played as a DPS for the first few months cause I didn't really know what I was doing at the time. After joining one too many group with a tank that couldn't hold aggro, or just made stupid mistakes, I decided to study tanking for myself and try it out, cause I was convinced I could do it better. Since then I've been tanking for 10+ years and haven't looked back. I enjoy setting the pace of the group and leading in dungeons/raids. If you think you'd enjoy that too, give tanking a chance.

This is exactly why I made the switch in Cata from my Rogue to DK. I could either spend my time bitching about tanks like the other players of control the situation and tank for myself. I've never regretted the decision.

Chris Woodward I have to vent. My best friend is a tank . In every other aspects he’s a good tank, but this drives me crazy. He never checks healers mana or if everyone is ready, he just pulls (so I guess not that good of a tank lol). I tell him all the time and he just laughs but god damn it’s so irritating. Hell joke like “haha gotta hurry up bro”. I’m like dude just fucking take a second to check. Sorry that shirt is so triggering lol
@20TheGame095 жыл бұрын
john doe dude you couldn’t speak the truth any better. My gf and I both play and were doing a time walking instance last weekend and the tank kept doing that exact shit, got to one and we kept wiping because he would constantly pull mobs without checking to see if anyone in the group was ready as well as not checking my gf toon’s mana. I (a dps destro lock) ended up having to pull mobs off of him and run my tank pet as well as my infernal since he would die within the first few seconds of a boss. Tanks need to make sure that everyone in the party is ready.

almost nobody will stick up for the pace they want to move at, if you get someone like that just set them as focus or in general keep an eye on them and aggro anything they pull, changing pull size to accommodate them in the future, its easy to work out if you over or under pulled through the first few groups and those groups usually provide little to no risk of a wipe anyway.
@nathanmoon58918 жыл бұрын
A proper pace is simply moving to the next group after you kill the group before. You get all kinds in dungeon queues so you will get people who like to move fast and stragglers who are always playing catch up. The stragglers don't matter to much if they are dps as long as you are only pulling trash but if it's a healer it can be problematic. At the end of the day, they have to follow your pace or they will die.

If I'm on my main and someone pulls (Unless it's something that's hard to skip), they can get fucked. I'm already doing fast, big pulls, and if they're not satisfied with that, they can fuck right off. If however I'm on my alt and leveling/gearing/learning how to play it, I'l be going a lot slower and as a result I'm generally fine with people pulling, as long as it's not silly mobs that we don't need to pull
@Chopstorm.8 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest, if I'm on my healer and I see a tank doing pulls that are a snooze fest for me, I'll pull more. While it's ok to be cautious, in many cases all you're doing is slowing down the run.

@AstolfoGayming8 жыл бұрын
"Too late, they already have their tanks" or "Make your own" Getting into an established guild as a tank is really fucking hard, and the only way you can really reliably replace one of them, is if they're needing replacement anyway (They're shit, they're not there, etc.) Though you can try having a word with the GM/RL about wanting to tank and if there's a chance you can get the spot for something like farm where it doesn't really matter.
@richardmathes43838 жыл бұрын
SaltyMuffin yeah getting into an established guild as a tank is almost impossible. I managed to do it but only because the main tank was wanting to go DPS for Legion so I just replaced him as main tank. Most generally established guilds have tanks already and you're not gonna get their spot unless something comes up.
@nioxic778 жыл бұрын
SaltyMuffin this is my issue as well.. i find dps boring. and healers cant really do much alone tbh if i wanna focus on one spec.. ive been unguilded for a while
@domiflex15688 жыл бұрын
try the hardest way :) keep your eyes open for recruitment from guilds who's looking for members to make a raid squad. every week there are new born guilds who mostly will fail faster than they build it up... but who knows, maybe you picked a good one out. imo i think that the tanks are the hardest spots to keep for a raid squad or not.
@mikekelly19577 жыл бұрын
It may be hard, but if you get into a guild that is sizable there may be many opportunities for you to tank for groups. That way you can establish yourself as a consistent, reliable & competent tank. Then you could be invited to off-tank and finally MT raids. Patience it the key to nearly all success with all things.

great vid preach, i really agree about just jumping in and start tanking, messing up is the best way to get better. Only i would add for all of the dps out there thinking about tanking or healing, is that you need to be able to handle pressure well, and you need to have pretty good reaction time.

Another thing if you're pugging as a new tank: let the group know you're new. It sounds scary, but most people will accept that you stood up to the plate to tank, and they will offer advice. Especially tell them to let you know if you need to pick up the pace/slow it down. 9/10 times the healer will get your back and walk you through it. Healers and Tanks watch out for each other.

As an experienced warrior tank, I can approve of this stuff. Being overgeared in compare to Heroics, I can pull several groups of enemies by using revenge's cleave to multi-bleed groups of enemies. The bleed on it's own can hold aggro for a long time.
@urcle37048 жыл бұрын
Tip for tanks. Don't chain pull unless your healer is okay with it. Your healer might need mana and if you keep pulling with out any chance to drop out of combat he can't.
@kubba0078 жыл бұрын
shadowmeld, also if the healer runs out of mana each pack, you can just go on without him.

Leaffierino Kripperino Rofl. Because everyone plays night elf? "go on witih out him". You only do heroics dont you? Try "going on with out them" in mythic 10 mate.

Most healers roll druid nightelf and it's not like you're going to take pala or disci on 10+. If a healer I pick on 10 runs out of mana each pack it's a deplete, since he won't heal out a boss on tyrannical and even on forti packs aren't that strong, also did a lot without a healer on 10 kiting and doing 300k+ healing helps
@urcle37048 жыл бұрын

Different roles, different perspectives. I recently got into healing and i find i got one of two groups. Either: Smooth run, tank knows what they're doing. Moves at a decent pace but doesn't pull more than they can handle, deeps know their shit and i mostly only have to concentrate on the tank and even then can occasionally throw in some attacks. Or: Tank massively overpulls and outpaces and loses aggro or misses a mob, deeps don't know which way is up. I'm sweating bullets trying to keep up with the MASSIVE amounts of health being lost group-wide while struggling to even keep myself alive due to aggro or missing mechanics because i'm so focused on trying to keep people alive. Unfortunately the latter type is far more common. Tanks after a "smooth run" wind up hindering the run due to taking on far more than the group can handle. This assessing the group thing is great advice that I wish more tanks did. Also, getting kicked shouldn't be the end of the world but there seems to occasionally be this bug where you'll get the deserter debuff even from being kicked meaning a 30 minute wait. In that scenario, ragequitting is practically the only choice. (Except last time with healer I made good use of the time by running trials. Passed up to silver but not quite nailed gold.) What's always terrified me from getting into tanking is people expecting you to rush. When you're new to tanking you may not be confident enough to move at a fast pace and as such you'll wanna take your time and pull smaller groups of mobs.

I've definitely been kicked a lot in LFG / Mythic (no keystone) as a DPS whom is trying to help aid the pace of the dungeon by pulling in a controlled / sensible manner - some people really don't like this happening when they are tanking. In terms of learning curve I appreciate that this 'ninja pulling' is personal preference. I've generally stopped doing this and resorted to asking for an increase in pace or to provide some tips which hopefully will speed up the flow of the action. As a tank main, my advice for improving play would be to time yourself in instances and always try to beat your time for the next run. The key is to not just try and speed through with bad play but to play well and be efficient with your abilities in order to make the run smoother, and usually faster. I also do this whilst leveling, it makes LFG leveling way more enjoyable as you can get some of the later expansion instances down to 8/9 minute times which is super fun to speed through these huge instances.

The only time I'm not taking aggro off the dps is when it's a hunter with a taunting pet. Sure first time it happens I'll ask them to turn it off, and usually it happens, but if it doesn't, 3 strikes and I'll let the mob kill his pet and him potentially. That shit is just triggering me.

a BIG POINT when starting to tank mythic+ is knowing the dungeon, being confident that after that last boss you're going to be at 100% enemy forces. A tank can single handedly destory a keystone run, which may make tanking seem even scarier - but it's really not. Look up tanking POV's on youtube for the dungeon, read a few guides on the different dungeons/skips/%% so you can step in there comfortably, and know that you know your shit. This is also great for confidence, as you can step in a group and be "that guy" who will get you through this shit no problem, and ain't no puny dps gonna tell you otherwise. If you know the correct routes all you have to do is decide which pace is right for the group, and you'll be doing 3 chest runs in no time. Happy tanking!

He is preaching the truth again! Nice baseline guide :) And for all of you masochist tanks out there: Please don't be offended when a DPS pulls something in a heroic dungeon. They probably just wants to get the artifact power at the end. They won't pull too much, since they just want to speed through. While most players won't write in chat, they will still react to what others write. So if the deeps-train is getting out of hand a simple: "Stop!" might just do it. Most people are actually not dickish but just annoyed that they have to derp through a dungeon that drops poop loot just to get artifact power

The best advice i've ever seen for being nervous as a new tank or healer, is to start on low level vanilla dungeons. The mechanics aren't complicated at all, but enough still exist for you to learn how to dodge and pull aggro. The dungeons are also typically small and straight forward enough where wiping isn't a big deal at all. Also starting as a dps so you can see how other tanks and healers operate in the field can help.

At that ilvl you could do normal and heroics in a breeze. The best advice i can give is to just yolo it like preach said in the vid the worse that can happen is you get kicked. best thing to do once you get into a dung is pull the first pack and see how quickly it goes down if its quick then you should know to pull 1-2 groups with little to no problem. Holding threat is alot easier then people think just charge in and use thunder clap with some cleave and you'll never lose aggro. if want some help or would like a healer to help carry hit me up im a 863 mw monk if you want my btag just reply.
@ianamores8 жыл бұрын
I just recently picked up tanking as well. The best recommendation is just to try at it. You won't get kicked trust me. If anything they will blame the healer:) I recommend talenting 'Crackling Thunder' as well, so you help to increase the radius of your thunder clap. It really helps in grabbing aggro. Make sure you use revenge once in awhile. Also if you're using ElvUI be sure to turn on your tank plates so you know when the enemies health turn green you have dropped aggro.
@nathanmoon58918 жыл бұрын
You won't have any issues in normal or heroics. As long as you are rolling Shield Block, a decent amount of groups will have a hard time eating through a full Ignore Pain. Use Shockwave to help give you some time to generate rage and don't be afraid to use Demo Shout for big trash pulls.

don't know why people are talking about normals/heroics.. at 858 you're good for starting mythic+. I guess it's possibly more not wanting to do it in pugs? I'm the same, I hate queuing with randoms. If they're not talking garbage and being abusive, then it's utter silence. Thankfully I have a small guild of friends that we do mythic+ in (and the odd raid if we get 10 people online which is rare) I'd recommend finding a casual mythic+ guild and get to know the people there.. once you're confident in the people you're with, you'll find grouping and tanking far less stressful.

I find the best thing to do in a PUG if your new to tanking or don’t know the route is just say so, say “don’t know route, just let me know which way” and almost every time someone will say “no prob”. I just came back to WoW after quitting during Cata and when I tell a group “Hey, just returned to the game and I don’t know the dungeons yet” they are usually cool about it, they’ll mark and let me know any special mechanics or specific mobs to Target first, etc. A lot of times pugs will expect the tank to take the lead, so if your not comfortable with that just tell them and it’ll be rare that’s it’s a problem.

I really like tanking in Legion, especially with my group on Mythics+ although some of the affixes seem a bit overwhelming to handle them properly. This is really good video on basics, would like to see more on advanced methods.

This is actually really helpful. I came from a shit mmo where a good enough dps could pull threat off the tank, so I never even knew about this threat cap. Additionally, I've been wanting to go prot on my warrior, for the exp and for the faster queue pops (lord knows lfg takes forever to find a willing tank). So I'm hoping it's not as hard in wow as it was in my other mmo

As someone who has 850+ tanking gear just through offspec loot and a fear of dipping my toes into tanking heroics, this video is top notch! BRB - Gonna queue for my first dungeon and get kicked for not handling the first trash pack :D

Brewmaster tanks are the harderst to heal according to my experience.
@animehbkscm8 жыл бұрын
But that's because you try to keep them topped off. Brewmasters thrive with lower health and the damage they take is much smoother than most tanks.

After 6 + years I came back to wow and this anxiety is real. I just had the DPS pull mobs ahead of me and wasn’t offended. I’m getting better with 3 dungeons under my belt lol. I’m so used to the vanilla days where things were slower and more tactical
@eXileLies8 жыл бұрын
You can also increase the speed in a dungeon if you, as a tank, move for your DPS. If a DPS can just stand and press buttons without moving etc., the dungeon will be over faster & a good DPS will notice that. It is basically the first step towards a Raid / Mythic+ Guild - Preach said that before; If you stand out with your play-style - whether you have gear or not - some people will notice that.

How am I supposed to learn my threat cap? Is it something you can look up?
@jakeevans76468 жыл бұрын
hit it like 4 times and you should be good
@ianhorne95948 жыл бұрын
I'm sure its kind of like a guess. You can only put so much threat onto a target. On the target ui, I believe it caps at like 1000% or something like that it will show above their protrait
@kevjp59878 жыл бұрын
Matthew Kessler there's a feature in interface that will give you a % of threat on your target portrait. if that % drops below 90 you lose aggro. I don't know what the cap is I've seen hit in the thousands. activating the target of target display helps too
@iceee4208 жыл бұрын
Matthew Kessler turn threat percentages on in the interface. after that you will have to feel it out. if a mob drops below 90% you will lose threat. highest I've seen my threat at is 20000%ish in a dungeon before the mob died as for exact amount of threat. a melee needs 110% of your threat to peel off you. a ranged needs 130% of your threat. based on your class, gear, roles in group you will get a feel for it very quickly. I'm a blood dk and after a blood boil, heartstrike/marrow rend x2 nothing will pull off me unless I don't hit it for a solid minute

I tank off and on, and will occasionally come across something I don't know. Honestly, I just ask my group, or at least let them know from the get go that I am somewhat unexperienced. these days its really dungeon specific. When I first started trying to tank, I would ask my group for feedback/advice at the end. Most all the responses I got were positive, and helpful advice

Instead of guide for each spec, i think role specific guides are more in line now. Like this. A melee dps ranged dps tank heal guide etc.

Nice to get my own experiences confirmed XD I do still have one problem sometimes: especially with heal druids. Some of them basicly keep their Hot going on me all the time - Which is nice. But can present a problem for me when a new group is added and my AoE aggro skills are on CD or the group is well spread so i can't reach all mobs with one skill (and the other one is on CD). - My best solution so far is to try to walk with them as they march towards the healer which usually works except if it doesn't... like when the healer is already quite close or something like that. - I'm trying to save my skills for the next group but i mess up too often.

I would like a guide on default raid UI for tanks. Like how to split groups. Tank swapping. Off tanking All that. Five mans I understand. Get aggro. Burn down trash. Move boss out of stuff. But setting up 25 people in a raid seems daunting. Any advice would be great. Thank you sir. Always love your videos.

Preach, been watching a while, mostly Drama Friday. Not gonna lie about myself. I'm 30, bad anxiety. Been playing wow for a good 7 years now - you know how it is, moving through different guilds and groups, etc. Well, i've been a ret the WHOLE time. Well, bar part of SoO. I played Ele to bring BL to the table. For the first time i've been actually playing around with Prot and... to a lesser extent, Holy as I have Ashbringer at 35 and figure ''Hey, why not get the others up too?'' To my surprise, i'm actually enjoying prot, almost as much as i've always loved ret. So now i'm starting on your tanking series. One thing I will say is to alleviate anxiety I WILL be bringing pocket heals and DPS from within the guild i'm in... however to make it a little more difficult it WILL be people playing low geared alts. Would you think this kind of offsets that I know the people easing me into it? Or worse, since they know I can be aggressive on Ret, would it make those early runs that bit worse? In any case, if you see this and you read it, thanks man. Love Drama Time, some of those stories are fantastic to listen to while running around with my world quests and stuff. A brofist to you, and to ghost too. :)

Nice vid preach. i remember when i was tanking with my DK in LFR back in pandaland days. and my IRL friend was a pretty substantially geared pally. I'm not sure what boss or dungeon it was but the 1 with the triceratops. i ended up with max stacks because i didn't know i had to swap with the other tank. i thought i was just super bad ass being able to tank without knowing anything. l8r on i realised i got pocket heal carried super hard haha.

this video was rly helpful but in regards to reading certain behaviors, in my experience the people don't rly think too much about there actions, especially in rnd heroics/mythics. for example that ret paly in the video just thought "gogogogo" and not "ok, i can pull this because i can off heal the tank, have serveral offensive and defensive cooldowns, so even if the healer isn't catching up I can controll the situation"
