As of March 2024, the FDA now allows yogurt to make this statement: “Eating yogurt regularly, at least 2 cups or 3 servings per week, may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes according to limited scientific evidence”. Ta da! This is called a qualified health claim. In a Danone-sponsored presentation at the American Society of Nutrition conference, Dr. Christopher Cifelli walked through the story for how this claim came to be. In 2018, Danone petitioned the FDA based on overwhelmingly consistent evidence from meta-analyses which compiled together many observational studies showing that eating more yogurt is associated with a 14-16% lower risk of type 2 diabetes in the future. It’s important to note that since these were observational cohort studies rather than randomized controlled trials, we can’t say that eating yogurt definitely prevents type 2 diabetes. There’s something special about yogurt compared to milk or cheese - maybe it’s the food matrix, or the probiotics and other bioactives made by the microbes. My question to you is - would reading this claim compel you to eat more yogurt? How do you feel about the “limited evidence” part of it? That’s what science tastes like.
