Hello everyone and welcome! In this video I'm going to explaining some of the reasons why I feel the second season of The Walking Dead is better than most people seem to think it is. Hi everyone. I know you were probably expecting me to upload something in response to the news that Andrew Lincoln looks like he is leaving TWD, however I’ve been working on this video for much of the week - so I wanted to get this done first. I will be posting a short video about my feelings regarding this news tomorrow though. Also, I know I that I skipped over talking in depth about Shane being the season’s antagonist in this video, which for me is one of the reasons why season 2 is so good, however as I’m doing a separate video about Shane soon I didn’t want to talk about him too much because I’d probably just end up repeating myself on that video! Anyway, I hope you like this upload, and let know your thoughts. 😊

Massively underrated it literally has 5 of some of the best episodes in the series like what lies ahead, pretty much dead already, 18 miles out, beside the dying fire, and Better Angels it also had good episodes like save the last one, triggerfinger, judge jury executioner, secrets etc and has the best back half in the shows history and was 13 episodes long the only downside was it had pacing issues and the season made them stay on a farm the whole seasons but looking at other twd seasons they have the same problem so I feel s2 is better than most seasons due how great character development is and the quality of great episodes, it's amazing how Amc forced Frank into a pathetic budget and forced them to stay on a farm and he still made a good season wished Frank stayed on the show I feel he would've made this show Emmy worthy

Well they stayed at the farm for the season (13 episodes)but look how long they stayed at the prison.LOL They were at the prison season 3(16 episodes) and season 4(8 or 7 episodes if I recall). But I get that the pacing wasn’t for everybody. The problem when you have too much action is you get desensitised. Matrix 1 is the best in the trilogy because the iconic action scenes stand out because it’s not one action scene after the other like in the 2 sequels that followed.

Season two was why I ended up caring so much about the characters. I also really liked the early "nineteenth-century" feel of the episodes. At the time I remember reading some pretty good articles describing how society was descending by being depicted as moving back in time. Finally I believe Kirkman said that one of his inspirations for writing the Walking Dead was thinking about what if not of the Living Dead never ended,...which of course is one of my favorite movies.

Season 2 is my favourite season of TWD ever, and one of my favourite seasons of anything ever! Shane is just phenomenal (GIVE JON THE AWARDS!!!) and as such he is my favourite character. To be honest I found Rick very unlikable during the early seasons, and I can't put my finger on it. I've recently rewatched season 2 fully, and it is just masterful! I felt the exact same about 'Chupacabra'! Also, I found a lot of the originals a lot more likeable during season 2. I found Lori to be very realistic, Dale didn't piss me off as much as usual and I'm actually an Andrea fan (although killing her off ruined her whole story). I know this contains a lot of unpopular opinions, but this is where I find myself with season 2
@HeyJoshyJosh

Jon was brilliant as Shane throughout his time on the show. I also get what you mean about Rick, I think he was a bit too naïve when he first appeared, it wasn't until the 3rd season he became badass leader (well...minus him freaking out at ghost Lori!). It's definitely a season that begs to be watched again.

@Loophole23742

Season 2 was amazing in my opinion. It’s when the show was at its best. Season 1 and 2 is where all the world building and characterisation occurs. Season 3 was action packed to appease those that felt the show was moving too slow. If you look at where the show is today it makes you appreciate season 2 so much more. My favourite seasons are 1,2 and 4. Wasn’t really a fan of the others overall, though most up to season 6 had some quality individual episodes. When I want to binge watch old episodes during my night shifts, I usually watch season 1-2 or just watch season 2. Games like state of decay and the last of us definitely gave me a walking dead season 2 vibe. It’s what I refer to as classic walking dead. The good old days when I would rush home from work to watch the episodes. Regarding the comics most would agree that the best arc is the prison/Woodbury, well season 2’s pacing was very much like the comics during the prison arc. It’s the group, bonding, becoming a family, doing regular stuff like a soap opera, with eventful moments sprinkled along the way unlike season 3 and many others that followed where its high octane action around every turn. Season 2 had some of the best characters and actors of the entire run of the show. Season 2 had (Bethel)Shane,(DeMunn)Dale, a great selection interacting with each other, made for compelling and grounded story telling, well as grounded as you could get for a show about zombies.

Yes! I loved season 2 so much! It was a season all about character development and the loss of Rick’s innocence to do what it takes to keep people alive. He put away his sheriffs uniform and said goodbye to that man. I really loved watching Shane’s slow decent into madness and arguing back and forth with Rick when he gave some very valid points. “The right choice is what keeps us alive!” It was the season where the group finally came to a morally grey choice about Randell. I thought it was really interesting to see these normal people thrown into a world and still trying to hold onto the old world’s rules. And seeing Sophie was another high point because although I knew she was dead, the look on everyones face when she walked out of that barn. It became more about just finding Sophie and more so the hope the group still held. And I adored watching Glenn and Maggie. They were so fresh and fun and I really enjoy rewatching their love story

The hunt for Sophia is ment to feel hopeless.. When you rewatch the show and realise Sophia is in the barn by the time rick and Carl get to the farm.. It hits different.. Even worse if they didn't suggest making the run to the school, otis would have sat down, talked to Patricia, mentioned he put a girl in the barn and they would have found her ALLOT earlier.. As soon as someone mentioned they where looking for a little girl.. They where litteraly one sentance away from finding out where she was

The writting was great, the acting, the special effects, no filler, no boring episodes, the acting was amazing, the character development (Shane, Rick, Hershel, Carl, Maggie) was great. To this day S2 (and 3) are my favorite seasons but especially 2, I fell in love with the walking dead because of how human it felt. Season 2 was literally JUST the human aspect. No massive war, no caveman junkyard people, no man talking to his vampire bat (even tho I don’t hate all this stuff necessarily), just a group trying to survive and their inner conflicts creating strife
@thedefinitive6296

I thought with season 1 only being six episodes, it made sense that season 2 was paced more slowly and focused more on building up the characters and their relationships. It's part of why I think season 3 starts off so strongly. Season 2 laid all that foundation for us to just be able to jump into season 3 with a bit of a time skip. The absence of action doesn't mean things aren't happening. A lot happens in season 2 that, again, sets up season 3 very well! And the finale! Best finale they've ever done. The siege on the farm was brilliant and the dark note they end the show on with Rick saying, "This isn't a democracy anymore!" and the tease of the prison. Perfection!! Season 2 is criminally underrated
@moge820

One of the things I LOVE about season 2 is that if you told people that the likes of Carol, Carl, and Maggie would've ended up being badasses later down the line they'd have laughed in your face, give it 2-4 seasons and they're huge fans! I know this sounds insignificant and I'm terrible at explaining things but it's crazy to see how far our Atlanta survivors have come since this season, things Shane would've done that everyone disagreed with in season 2, Rick and co. would've been on board with what Shane says these days, it's crazy really, season 2 was also before the annoying tropes of twd, like faking deaths, terrible writing, good characters becoming annoying, and a hell of a lot more. This is why season 2 is my favorite season

Season 2 is without a doubt the best season ... this is where our understanding of each character originated , the pause from action gave us a chance to get to know them . It was good, but it was full of the “smart characters acting dumb” shit that killed the series. Lori leaving Carl with irresponsible people, then wondering where he went, then finding him and being relieved, then leaving him again, and then getting herself into a car accident on an EMPTY ROAD, Dale being a moronic philosopher whose pansy refusal to contribute anything to the beyond some ideas, Maggie... Rick! I loved this season because it had some incredible moments: Shane and the other guy at the field medical facility, Rick and Shane’s confrontation at the school, Daryl looking for Sofia, the shootout with the two guys at the abandoned bar... great stuff! Seasons 6 7 and 8 has more moments of stupidity but far less moments of awesome.

The show never put me on an emotional rollercoaster again like it did with the barn scene. Shane had had enough and was taking action and doing what needed to be done. Nobody else was going to step up. When he started shooting walkers, it was like fuck yeah, KILL THEM ALL (I know, they're dead - as shane points out). The group joins shane in putting down the walkers from the barn, effectively telling rick that maybe his management style needed a little reworking. It was a nice distraction from the real denouement to come - sophia emerging from the barn, snarling and rasping. This reveal was a gut punch while celebrating a victory. I probably watched that scene more than any other on the show because of how impactful it was. It still holds up as one of the best in the series. Great job as always, sir 👍

You're spot on with Shane and the barn. I know Rick was pissed off for him killing the walkers on Hershel's land, but Shane realised that what Rick was doing in trying to capture walkers was idiotic. Rick spent to long playing Mr Nice Guy, whereas Shane was more practical, and like you said the rest of the group seemed to realise he was right when they shot all the walkers Hershel had been keeping. Thank you for watching!

Season Two has a lot of slow moments and a few dumb moments. But it's really a season where it's better to watch it like a movie. If you watched it with a week in between each episode, yeah it gets frustrating. But if you sit down and binge watch the entire season in one sitting. It fixes most of the pacing issues and you can more clearly see a build up in the story. Plus the last two episodes of Season Two were amazing. Rick vs Shane, Michonne's first appearance and getting a glance at the prison? Probably the best cliffhanger the show has ever done.

Why is having a season set at one location a bad thing? Why do characters always have to be on the move for it to be entertaining? And they were at the quarry for the majority of season 1 and the prison for season 3. Yes it was split between Atlanta, the CDC and Woodbury, but why is it perceived to be such a bad thing for all the characters to be in one place, talking, interacting, developing, and building up to some of the best moments in the whole damn show? Doesn't it make sense for them to find a safe haven and to slow things down in the second season to really develop the characters after a fast paced and very short first season? It wouldn't have been the same if they were only on the farm for like 6 episodes and then went straight to the farm. Sure some episodes were slow and fillery, but it still was a "less is more season" and had less padding than other seasons, and even the lesser episodes had important conversations between characters that told you more about their backstory and understanding their point of view about situations, and ended on crazy cliffhangers! Season 2 is criminally underrated and when people say it's a boring season because its all set on a farm, to me they just don't understand good writing and story telling

Such a good video, I'm now considering rewatching season 2. I'm sure you've heard the news about Andrew Lincoln leaving twd; I'd like to see a vid on your opinions on it.

It wasnt boring, I didn't mind the fact that it was all shot at 1 location, it had good conflict but it wasnt great. Yes it was better than s7 and s8 but the budget they had it was almost impossible to make an amazing second season. It was a big step down if you compare it to the first season, but you can't really blame the showrunner. AMC shouldnt have been greedy, it hurt the season. Overall it was watchable but compared to most TWD seasons and seasons from other shows it was pretty weak.

If I was Shane I would have just left with Andrea, atleast there's no guilt in banging her, plus he could train her to be a better fighter like she wanted

Yes! It’s this season that got me hooked on the walking dead, I would watch on a Friday night (in the UK!) and wish my week away to see what happened next, I think it got a bad rep for being a slow season because as you say they were stuck in one place.

I just want to say, your own video beat me to it. I was going to say that you should make a Shane-centric video. Looking forward to it! As well, interesting take on the application of limitations on creativity. Darabont certainly was apt and competent, you've given me further reason to like the work he did on the series.

Thank you, am hoping to the Shane video up on the channel next week. I think most people would have struggled to pull off making a season twice as long as the previous one with a much lesser budget! So, for me Frank did a pretty damn good job with the tools he had.

Thoroughly looking forward to it, there's no such thing as too much Shane discussion. Bernthal is one hell of an actor. Well, I've heard he could've been a bit nicer about production. But, AMC should've tried much harder to keep him around. Even if the writing quality kept the same, at least it would've looked well shot. I've used this metaphor before, but AMC's always tried making a cheap motel looking like an upscale resort. Darabont could've done that.

I've been waiting for someone to make a video about this. The SECOND half of season 2 is underrated. The first half was super terrible and what the characters were doing made NO SENSE. The characters spent the entire first half gossiping and irritating each other over stupid shit because the writers didn't know how to adjust to the extended episodes that were implemented spontaneously. The second half however was when the writers began creating a better flow for the season and implementing legitimate conflict instead of having the characters act retarded. Although there were still questionable logic and mini-plots in it, you could feel the increase in quality and substance. The characters were acting like how normal people were suppose to act, the plots felt necessary instead of forced, and the dialog became quite interesting. I freaking loved it, but that first half was the worst half of a season in TV history. Can't blame the writers too much because of AMC's greed and the firing of Frank, which led to upset actors (Dale and Andrea)

Season 2 I've always thought was either the third or second best season of the show. It had good moments and focused more on the characters and how they changed rather than the zombies themselves.

1. It’s gonna make me sad every time now when you start a video without “Hello everyone, and welcome!” 2. I think it speaks volumes about the current seasons and state of the show if you’re going back at the older stuff and saying “damn, maybe I was too harsh.”

I rarely disagree with you but looking for Sophia dragged the fuck on ,seemed like it took forever. At the time ,I wanted Shane to die long before he did . Didn’t like Carol yet. Lori & Carl annoyed me -so did Beth with her not talking. The walking is at its best when they are on the road & all together -in my opinion. The last 2 episodes made up for all of it.The Ricktatorship speech is one of my fave scenes in the show.

How is an episode ending with Carl getting shot any different from the other cliffhangers? Except for the yearlong Negan one, I don't think it is. It's the same way of ending an episode as Daryl getting shot or John Dorrie getting shot on FTWD

predatoure that's a very good point. I thought it was great when they did it back then, but now whenever they do it now (for example John Dorrie) it just pisses me off. I was trying to figure out why that was any different, and I think that's all it is

Hey man a tip for your videos, when you speak it seems incredibly unnatural because every sentence starts out at a high note but the last word of every sentence is a lower note. Its really hard to explain through text but if you listen its like "I WENT TO THE ZOO AND THEN I WENT TO MY home." Maybe if you try to take longer cuts or extend your thoughts it would sound more natural? I don't think it has to do with your accent either but I could be wrong. I know how frustrating it is to listen to your own voice in playbacks but it makes the video feel really choppy.

Jared Devon I know what you mean. It's because my voice it quite deep so I try to make a bit higher (so people don't fall asleep) however by the end of the sentence it's hard to keep it up. Honestly my voice is just too deep to talk normally

It depends on why you watch TWD - is it because of the action and zombies or because of the characters? Personally I was never into zombie genre, started watching TWD when it was already few seasons in and after short 1st season, it was probably 2nd that really got me drawn in. Exactly because it was about ordinary people dealing with the apocalypse,and more - whole Shane-Rick arc could be easily told without zombies in the background (eg. Rick as a soldier lost in action). Damn, that story alone, about a guy who wanted to save his best friend in coma but couldn't, then felt in love with his wife and even saved their son's life, but at the end had to be killed by that very friend, how much better it is than to watch endless pointless shootings with jumping saving lives tigers and explosions in the background ;) I guess another way to look at it is how easily we could identify with all the characters. Viewer could imagine being one of them. Something impossible with trash people or even normal characters now, as after what they went through they act like doubtless soldiers who on the other hand act completely not like their character would, because of the shitty writing.
@HeyJoshyJosh
@HeyJoshyJosh 6 жыл бұрын
I've never really been a fan of the zombie genre either, and it was the storytelling during the first few seasons that actually made me fall in love with the show. You make a good point about how it was easy to identify with these character initially, again something that got me on board with the first place, however as the show went on the characters became weirder and weirder to a point where I just found it hard to care.

I actually really enjoyed Season 2, and looking back it’s still one of my favorites. What Season are we on now? 10? The show has gotten very over the top with such unrealistic characters like Ezekiel. Seriously? Who talks like that? It’s annoying. I find myself often fast forwarding through one boring-dialogue scene after another. At one time this show was an absolute must-watch for me. Now it’s turned into something rather forgetful and hilarious.
