I listened to the podcast and Tom says Messi should have won it every year since 2009 just because he's a "better player" (which is subjective). By that logic there will always be a generational player with the best "talent" for a span of 5-8 years. Balon d'Or shouldn't be given based on that alone. It has to be based on individual contribution to team success and trophies. Otherwise the so called "best talent" would be given the award without necessarily winning anything which isn't the essence of sport.

Thank you. The Ballon D'or is an award for the player who's had the biggest impact on their team having overall success in that szn/indivdual brilliance throughout the year. Haaland over the course of the szn has proven to have the best szn in Europe individually while helping City win the treble. Yes, Messi won the World Cup and that's great, but other than that, he didn't do anything special at PSG over the course of the szn. Haaland deserves to win it

The ballon d'or is suppose to be merit not who you think is the best. They don't give out gold medals to who they think is the best at running 100m, but who actually runs the 100m the fastest. Haaland has been the best player this season. Messi winning the world cup is great for his legacy, but he wasn't the top scorer or even the best player. Haaland has won the treble as PL record top goal scorer and CL top goal scorer.
