It's terribly selfish, in a way. They feel as if the son's actions reflect on them (which... they do, to an extent; it varies. Sometimes I did bad things growing up that had nothing to do with my parents, like shoplifting for fun.) So when the kid fucks up, they make the situation exclusively about them. "But I'm not a bad mom! Since I'm SUCH a good mom, I raised a good kid, and everybody else is lying!" And in doing that, they get so absorbed in the kid that they actually forget about their kid entirely. Any criticism against their kid is taken to the most personal level because she refuses to see them as their own person with autonomy. And naturally, someone with that kind of complex CAN'T be a good parent; they're enablers like her. Or abusive. Or both, sometimes! And that's how we get to situations like this.
