What a superb songwriter you are Mr McAloon! Profoundly in love with your music and your silky voice since 1982. Too much sophisticated for general public, I’m sure you know you have the unconditional recognition from many and many who dislike mediocrity and lack of beauty. Thank you Prefab Sprouts❤️

1997 was the first year at the university for me. This song was very popular back then and played regularly on television. This was a time when music videos was the main means of promoting music. I had never heard of Prefab Sprout before but this song opened my eyes (or ears), and I listen to them still to this day. Thank you Prefab Sprout for making the world and life more beautiful. Can't believe it's been more than fifteen years ago, feels like it was yesterday. A prisoner of the past indeed!

Adding to a comment I made. After listening to this song many times the words and theme are just so good and clever. This is just so real. To the person doing the dumping, their ex is now nothing but a ghost, a memory or something that you don't want to see. For the dumped, the ex is very much still there and they are following them in their minds, much like a ghost would do. Yet another example of why Paddy Mcloon is a genius songwriter. 😮

A Prisoner Of The Past I'm a ghost to you now, I'm someone you don't really wish to see I'm a ghost to you now, a shadow since you turned your back on me Maybe you'll learn why it was I shook Baby your turn to wear the haunted look This ghost is here to stay I survived the blast Get ready, get ready to say I've found my niche at last A prisoner of the past Anywhere that you go, I'm going to be the welcome there for you Everywhere that you go, be certain that the table's set for two Maybe you'll learn, there's nowhere you can go Baby you'll turn, as white, as white as snow This ghost is here to stay I survived the blast Get ready, get ready to pay I'm taking you at last A prisoner of the past This ghost is here to stay I survived the blast Get ready, get ready to pay I'm taking you at last A prisoner of the past

Drums straight from the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby" which in turn is a tribute to the drums on the Ronette's "Be My Baby". The story line, though, is like a harder edged version of Jerry Butler's "Never Gonna Give You Up".
