Thank you for your brilliant videos. Years ago I used to have a model railway. Now I still have a bit of rolling stock and a few locos. I didn't realise that you could get them so detailed these days off the shelf so to speak. I would like to get mine set up again, but its all this digital stuff and it might be a bit beyond me. I am very impressed by the chip that can be programmed so as to make the running of the loco look more realistic. On my old layout I used a pulse controller to get similar results. I will have to read up more on all this digital stuff before I start up my layout again and watch a few more of these videos.

Is there a way of when programming a loco to lower the amount of sound that comes out the speakers? I own a Hornby class 43 in LNER livery but the sound it emits from its TTS Speakers is more than vocal!

Nice video as usual- I keep a fine black perm marker pen on hand for new arrivals (window surronds, buffer heads etc) Any visible copper pickups and red wires seen through the bogie sideframes get a quick coat of satin black at this stage also. If pipe detail is broken or missing from second hand purchases etc . Ebay always have new Hornby packs listed for a few quid.

A great tutorial Richard and lovely to see another 50 on the layout. Very strange with the vacuum hose because when I got mine (the previous, older version) the little bag of accessories was complete bar the vacuum hose just like yours - except that mine was bizarrely already fitted! I wonder why they fitted just that when they could have left it in the bag to be fitted by the owner as per the rest of the other hoses - strange. She does look great running on the layout though. .............Graham

A very good tutorial, I have just recently changed to DCC and as such with each new Loco that I buy I ask the shop to fit the decoder for me, now after watching your video and to see how fairly straightforward it is I feel confident enough now to convert the rest of my stock to DCC, the only problem that I can see is that some decoders need to be wired direct and my soldering is not the best, but I suppose with care that can be achieved, maybe sometime in the near future you could maybe demonstrate how to wire a decoder direct.

Huh, snazzy. I recently snagged a few bits and bobs off eBay to get back into things after nearly 20 years. One of them is a Bachmann N-scale 4-8-4 w/ 52' Tender. Got it for $39.99 US, seller said it works but runs slow. I'm assuming that just means it needs to be cleaned and lubed. Any tips for getting that thing apart and back together again? I imagine the side rods on a loco half an inch wide are gonna be fiddly...

Love the videos just a quick question what controller would you recommend for a small layout for running 2 or 3 trains at a time.
@HungryGuyStories7 жыл бұрын
IMO, that comes down to which controller you like best. I use the NCE system because I like the modern look of the controllers (most of the other brands look like 1970s TV remotes). But you won't go wrong choosing Digitrax or Lenz or MRC. Now, some fanboys are gonna flame me for listing MRC for example, or for not listing their favorite system. Others don't like the NCE controllers because of the thumbwheel speed control, while Digitrax has an actual knob speed control. Decoders are interchangeable, so you're not locked into choosing one brand of decoders to match your system. You can even use an N scale decoder in an HO scale loco if space is tight. But controllers are not interchangeable; if you buy a NCE system, for example, you can only buy NCE controllers.

Mmmmppphh. Detail changes in the chassis, as you note, are partially due to Hornby's enforced move from the Sandakan plant, up the road a few miles to the new Piko (ex East German company) plant. Info courtesy of a personal conversation with the Editor of a German modelling magazine back in 2013. One operational note (as I was a BR train driver) is that red tail lights must NOT be left on when hauling loads. The red light is obviously only found on the rear of the train !

I was excited when you said you'd show how you fit couplers, then I was disappointed when it became clear that the 50 had a NEM socket. It's not your fault, of course - it's just that it would have been cool to find out if there was a better way of fitting Kadees than I've been doing. Most of the stock I convert to Kadees is pretty old, so NEM pockets are a rarity.
@EverardJunction9 жыл бұрын
+ReddwarfIV Unfortunately for you almost all my stock has nem pockets. I don't really have any experience of fitting them to older stock.
@ReddwarfIV9 жыл бұрын
EverardJunction If you ever do fit anything to old stock, tell me if you find a better way than using a soldering iron to melt the plastic in a way that lets you shove a Kadee coupler into it. Or melt the plastic in such a way as to allow you to attach a coupler-box to it. I'd rather not do it that way, but I haven't found an alternative.
@thebritfarmer9 жыл бұрын
+ReddwarfIV what Kadees are you using? I have had success gluing #5 s to the underside of some wagons. Some I have been able to just screw in. there isn't a standard for items without NEM pockets you have to just treat each piece of stock as a one off and rig the kadee tomfit. Generally though a #5 will work.
@ReddwarfIV9 жыл бұрын
Scott Malcolm 5s and 20s. Bear in mind that for much of my rolling stock, I have to remove a huge tension lock coupler. Also bear ind mind, I'm mostly referring to carriages and locomotives - fitting the coupler to the underside would be useless - it needs to be attached to the bogey.

A decoder gives each loco a unique address. That way you can have one controller driving loco #1, and another controller driving loco #2, and so on and so on. You don't have to worry about selecting power blocks as your whole railroad is one big block with each loco being controlled by its own controller.

With all the detail one gets on modern models, it begs the question as to why no manufacturer incorporates a driver? Not all modellers want to fiddle around adding to their model - some of us just want the joy of running the engine, straight from the box. Real engines will not be going along without a driver (HOPEFULLY!) so why should models?
