I respect people thinking about their safety even though sometimes it seems a litle over the top. What i respect even more are people who stay in shape and try to keep a good defensive body and lifestyle, especially in countries where guns are banned.

When you talk to your HOA about securing gates you will quickly find they are far more concerned with the non-HOA-compliant shrubs you have planted and the Non-approved lighting you are using. You will also discover that your mailbox is 2 inches too close to the curb and your driveway will need to be replaced because it is 1 inch too narrow and was not made of the correct color/texture concrete. When you have fixed all that we will talk with you about your siding and roofing.

The burgler I caught under my front steps had jumped the fence where only one neighbor could of seen and they where not home. Because I keep my eye's out and sweep I saw him laying down, dropped my grocery bags and had my Walther PPS sights on him instantly. He peed his pants, seems he was just about to kick in my door. So if people think it does not happen that was not even shtf. I added a cell phone based alarm that calls me after that.

I hooked up a comprehensive alarm system that allows me to monitor camera and window/door sensors after being the victim of a car burglary. Car property theft is one thing, but if someone is in my house and doesnt retreat immediately upon seeing me and hearing the alarm blaring. I think it’s safe to assume they are ready to seriously harm, rape, or kill any member of my household.

Where I live there are a lot of trees and heavy shrubs behind my home , but it is too thick for a person to move through and I keep it that way. I also have black out drapes on all my windows.. We don't open the windows ever so the drapes are closed all the time. There are other things that make it easy for us too tell if there are people on the property that I won't go into.

Security is a tough topic to discuss within rule of law. There are a ton of measures I would put in place that cannot be placed prior to WROL/SHTF. The house shown would be almost impossible to properly secure, too many point of ingress, and too much cover close.

Plant bushes with thorns under each window (rose, blackberry, raspberry, these will keep people from trying to enter through the window. Those hedges in the backyard are too much of a an opportunity for concealment, throw in some blackberry's there also. I have solar motion activated lights around my house and in the backyard. These do two things, they take away the dark as an advantage for intruders, and they can light up the way the intruder ran because only those lights activated will be on. You can also install alarms on the gates, when the gate is opened a loud noise will come from the gate that was opened. Window alarms will work on gates as well, amazon is full of these devices. They can also be used in blind spots as an area denial device. Good luck.

Making sure that everyone in the neighborhood has this homeowners phone numbers and have it so this homeowner can open, close and lock the neighborhood gates at anytime. A quality camera system would make it very tuff for anyone to get near the home. On better systems you can set up alarm zones on every camera that will sound an alarm inside the home then send photos and video to the homeowners phone, mine work at over 800ft. You can also have some camera systems take still photos along with video. This is nice for sending up to date info on intruders to the police. They now have microwave based motion detectors that only pick-up humans and can be hidden inside walls, doors and ceilings completely out of sight. A much needed video thanks for the hard work.

It’s crazy the things I think would be common sense, to me anyways people don’t think about. I have a neighbour next door that doesn’t even have blinds at the front of her house, at night you can directly see everything inside, (no I’m not a peeping Tom). For myself anyways it makes me less of a target as I always keep my blinds closed at night and during the day if I’m not in the room or if I leave the house they’re shut. In theory anyways, the amount of intel someone could get by scoping out the joint at my place should be minimal without living like a paranoid shut in.

I know this is a old comment but think vertically too most of my neighborhood is 1 story I live in one of the only multi story homes in the neighborhood (also higher elevation slightly) there are a lot of undefendable lines from my upper windows into their property.check for opportunities for undesirables to have the high ground.(i.e your upper windows might need blinds too.)
