We were lucky that we were not in the kitchen at the time! Be careful using any kind of pressure cooker, including the Instant Pot! Share this video with your Instant Pot friends too. It's a good warning for them to be careful with that product as well.

Most pc manuals mention, not cooking beans, because they tend to froth up and clog the vent. Maybe it was cumulative. With the old style, it was recommended before each use, to hold it up to a light and look through the hole to make sure its not clogged.

In Brazil every single home very poor or rich people has a pressure cook generation after generation, we use everyday, twice a day in average and we don't have these problem. Now here in America we buy fancier pressure cook, and we have problem. Like me I bought new pressure cook and after using 6 times, and started leaking water when the hissing sound start, I had to turn off the flame, before gets worse. I opened the pan, rearrange the rubber, looked, cleaned and and the leak repeated. I tried 3 times. So I had to go back to my old pressure cook. I will contact the pressure cook company for refund or give me another pan. I cooked beans, meat, I never overflow the pan. And the pan giving problem. It makes me nervous. I think I have to import the pressure cook from Brazil.

I grew up in Morocco we had at least 7 pressures cookers since my childhood. No one read their manuals, some of them are without manuals, in Morocco until today, everything is cooked in pressure cookers, we cooked it them 3 times a day, no one single day we had one single issues, even when a 20 years old ones with high flame stoves, all models in Morocco are based the French brand SEB. well designed. We cook beans, soups, everything in them. You did nothing wrong, I still cook beans on pressure cooker, the problem is the design has a big flow, the gasket release system didn't even work in your case, instead the pressure found a weak spot, weaker than the gasket release system itself : the handle mechanism which attached to the cover is not a smart idea. the pressure cooker didn't explode but the handle got ejected before even the gasket release system got into action.

I bought a pressure cooker in a yard sale. It had a rubber stopper that appeared to be a secondary pressure safety release. We were cooking beans and we heard an explosion. The rubber stopper had shot out and nothing else was damaged. When I opened the lid the cooker was empty. I was stunned, where did the beans go? I looked all over and found only a few pieces throughout the kitchen. Then I looked up and there they were all stuck to the ceiling. We threw that cooker into the garbage. I hit it with a sledge hammer bending it so nobody could try to use it again.

The rubber plug is a safety feature and it supposed to pop out when there is high pressure in the pot the main weight that sit on top usually let out excess pressure if for some reason it gets clogged the rubber plug pop out so the pressure is let out of the pot. At this case you just need to change the plug and check the gasket, weight etc no need to put in the garbage and definitely no need for a sledge hammer...

There is no way the Instant Pot can fail once the valve drops. Once that valve drops, any remaining little pressure is immediately released. All you have to do is look at the valve on the lid and see how it functions. I’ve yet to see a truly documented case on an Instant Pot failure leading to injury. Even if the silicone gasket fails, the worst that can happen is immediate pressure release at the fail. The lid is locked to the pot. It cannot be released until the pot has reached depressurization. The release valve will prohibit it. The silicone ring should be replaced after 30-50 uses. The rings are dirt cheap, buy three at a time. If people are scalding themselves, it’s because they’re not using caution when doing a manual release. We’ve been using 8 quart Instant Pots where I work for years, all day long, and have never experienced a catastrophic failure of the units in the kitchen.

Yep... I have the same cooker and over 20 years it may have "popped" twice, each time it has been because I was cooking it with too much heat and both times it "gave way" or released via the gap for the seal. It just makes a popping sound and the pressure releases through the popped gasket. No way has it enough force to move the pot.

The knob that sets and let's you release the pressure. Had you removed that and cleaned the orifice? I clean mine after each use. It could get clogged. I believe fagor has a video on this, but for sure I saw one on KZbin

I have the same pressure cooker... Mine is fairly new so I have only used it about 5 times... I think possibly the gasket needed replacing... they do not last forever. My manual tells to replace the gasket now and then. I have been in a kitchen when a pressure cooker totally exploded so that food was all over the ceiling... It is a very scary and dangerous thing. I would recommend the All American pressure cookers... I have one of those also.

Our Fagor blew it's gasket last night without ever having the first steam release as it usually does. My guess is that it got clogged by gunk (and for the armchair know it alls on here - we clean it everytime), and fortunately, like you both, nobody was anywhere near it when it "flew" off the stove onto the floor, spewing super-heated steam and liquid everywhere. My partner is usually in the corner prepping the rest of our meal right near the stove, and TG he was not when this thing went off. I was sat on the couch in the room adjacent to the kitchen and saw the thing fly off the stove ... the lid stayed on. I think the pressure release launched it like a rocket spewing the hot steam through the tiny opening like a jet engine. Like you Russ, we will NOT be using a FAGOR or ANY PC in the house again, and I too feel like putting the InstaPot outside and banning ALL people/dogs/etc. from being anywhere near it while in use. I'm extremely thankful that no one was anywhere near it when it went off. !!

Wow! Glad no one was injured! I have a Fagor Duo from the early 2000's. Mine has recently started leaking water & steam won't come out where it is supposed to. Fagor is out of business so I had to buy after market sealing rings. I'm afraid of my pressure cooker now although nothing bad has happened yet. Grew up in a home where Mom used her weighted pressure cooker that had no safety vaulve and nothing bad happened with it. I love cooking with a pressure cooker so not sure what to do now. Mine is very clean & still leaks water I suspect what happened with yours is happening with mine...

Yes, be carerful with any pressure cooker you use! You can get some sealing rings on Amazon, but I don't know if they are aftermarket or made by Fagor. For me, I've stopped using it as a pressure cooker and only use the pot as a regular cooking pot. For pressure cooking now, I use an Instant Pot. Good luck!

@@RussIsRight Thanks for your response to my comment, I'm also thinking of getting an Instapot myself now. I thought they were just a trend but sound like they may be safer or have more safety's built into them than a stove top type.

I thought the same thing, but I think it does have a bit more safety to the design of the Instant Pot. Not to say they don't blow up either because I have heard of others that had issues with this too! But, hopefully, the design will help a little more in the safety area. Still, buyer beware. Any kind of pressure cooker requires care in usage. Stay safe!

I worked just as it was designed to. It has three safety vents/valves. the third being the emergency catastrophic gasket is designed to blow threw the lid hole rather than the unit blow up like a bomb. This will happen when the first two vents are clogged fully or partially enough that the heat/steam/energy can't release fast enough to keep up with the heat applied from the burner. This could have happened with: 1) Heat not turned down enough and / or 2) The pot was left unattended Even if the first 2 vents are not clogged, if given enough heat and not turned down, the first to vents will scream at the full capacity as pressure builds, and finally blow out the emergency gasket though the lid cut out. You wouldn't put a pound of bacon in a pan, turn to high, and then go in the other room to tend to the children. The manual PC has to be monitoritored, while the the automatic PCs have electronic controllers that monitor pressure and temp and with measures of safety. I have the Fagor 6 quart, and also have 3 automatic PCs. BTW. My mother paid dearly with severe burns to her hands that summer morning when I was a kid awaiting my breakfast.

Most likely bad maintenance...and maybe putting the word "Explosion" in the title is not an accurate description of the incident. It looks like all the main safety features failed (as a result of probably clogged vent of the pressure regulator) and the gasket pressure release was the last thing to prevent an explosion...and it did that.

I no longer use it as a pressure cooker. Instead, it is now used a a regular pot to cook in. The heavy bottom makes it a great cooking pot but I no longer trust it for pressure cooking. I have an Instant Pot instead now. Still, I have not done much pressure cooking since the incident.
@seansegel3951
@seansegel3951 2 жыл бұрын
@@RussIsRight I understand… It appears most of these incidents of explosions had to do with something not not monitoring, cooker not being cleaned properly, gasket not cleaned or replaced, or areas clogged that needed to be properly cleaned & visually inspected before use . And yes there is always the possibility of a cooker manufacture defect causing this, but I’m not familiar with. There are more expensive models like the Fissler that may be even safer, with the functionally to not build up steam until the cooker is properly closed.

For cooking beans, we use our Buffalo rice cooker which has the slow cook function, this brand is really great because the interior coating is aluminum and it will never chip.
