Wow, quite a subject to tackle, Shelby--and you did a great job! As a senior person who has in the past, benefited from this "privilege," I would like to add something really important: While there is nothing wrong with wanting to look one's best and even doing things from coloring your hair, to wearing flattering makeup, to having surgical procedures to boost one's confidence, don't forget to nuture your character along the way. Because there WILL come a day when even the best of looks fade and you become somewhat "invisible" to the world, no matter how hard you try. So those, (like you Shelby), who put as much effort into enhancing their character, having compassion for others and always learning, will still feel connected to the world and relevant when that "pretty privilege" expiration date comes around. And believe me, aging hits hardest on the ones who always had pretty privilege. So we'd better make sure our main focus of self-improvement is on the inside!

And one of the saddest realizations one will never know until they might get there, is when we are young, vulnerable and exponentially self-critical, we may not feel we look as pretty as (say) the most popular girls in school as we are "ripening" into our own maturity, only to become real beauties maybe 10 years down the road!

Personality is way more important than looks, just that some people based their insecurity on their physical flaws and then believe that after plastic surgery the world changes and it doesn’t completely, it is only their perception about themselves. I’ve seen girls full of Botox, fillers, flawless make up, perfectly done hair and nice outfits being so pedantic that no one, not even dumb guys want to get close to them.

I lived this! My sister was the pretty one and growing up in a small town I heard on at least a weekly basis, "Is that your sister? She's so pretty! You don't look nothing alike!" It wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I came into my own. Of course I had moved to a different coast, different friends, and learned to appreciate me the person, not just the outer appearance!

Same here... And my sister always told me that I can't be pretty and intelligent the same time... therefore... I felt ugly. But now, many many years later I realized that everything wasn't true. While beauty still lies in the eye of the beholder, I was far from being really ugly... And if we got compared now... Well, I needed years to boost my confidence (which is still broken) but I realized now that my sister was just damn jealous of me, I never got that. I always looked up at her as my idol and tried to be like her... well, as I got older I saw the real person... drug addicted and a liar... never apologized to me for anything she did. But it took years for me to realize that. Sometimes people just follow a beauty standard which might not be even yours and then they are just disgusting by telling another person ugly because they don't fit into their beauty standard. I saw that with many people who were really very pretty in my opinion, be it male or female. I am actually quite happy that I don't look like my sister now =)

I've had a blepharoplasty - my eyelids drooped so bad it was messing with my vision. Most men and women on my father's side have gotten it done because of this. Not only can I see better but I have more confidence in my looks. I'm open about it, but it was done so well and naturally that no one noticed until I show them the before and after. Next, I work in trauma surgery and emergency medicine. Before that experience, I thought plastic surgery was only about cosmetics, but truly I've seen amazing things come from plastic surgery post-trauma to the face or other body parts. The point of plastic surgery is to bring functionality, and or a sense of normality after such an event. Great topic, Shelby!

So the summer between 9th and 10th grade, I turned 15 years old I sprung up from 5'8" to 6'2". My hair and face came together too. At that point, girls that used to bully me were suddenly clearly interested in me. It didn't matter that in May of that same year they were shitting on me. Even grown women would suddenly pay attention to me in a manner that I didn't really recognize at the time. Even today it still applies. People want to please me. I slide through airport security without issue. I'm an executive at work. It's real, even for men.

When I was a teenager I got teased for my nose, and it wasn’t that bad. So I decided when I was 22 I’d give myself a makeover. I did a blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, and breast Aug. I had to have a rhinoplasty revision 6 months later due to it not looking good at all. Now 12 years later just had to get my implants out and from BII autoimmune disorder starting from having them and my, eyelids that won’t stay closed so it impairs my sleeping and dries my eyes out so severely. I had actually thought about getting the lip filler that dissolves cause I have an aunt who got it, but your video alerted me there are consequences to EVERY procedure. So my twenty five cents are love the way God made you as much as you can and realize that a lot of it dissipates when you surround yourself with people who love you for who you are. Trying to keep up with social medias expectations and society is unrealistic and devastatingly unhealthy and has wreaked havoc on me. Is beauty worth stealing feeling good?

Because you can not get a job being ugly. I am Asian (not Korean) but in my country it's the same.Here people judge specifically WOMEN a lot. I've been treated really poorly, I was very below average but nice and well-mannered with people because otherwise they would treat me really bad.I am from very poor family and my parents didn't give me anything,so I had to work a lot to earn money for some facial tweaks.I also lost weight and cleared my skin.The life is completely different.I am still improving myself,but I am not longer considered ugly so yes it is very beneficial.I at least can earn better money looking normal. Weirdly enough it's the same in Scandinavia like Sweden,Norway and Denmark.They all judge by your surface only.

this is actually the main reason they get surgery, job market is crazy and surgeries only boomed during major economic depression so everyone was even more desperate to win a job. FYI they have to submit headshots with every resume…I feel like people don’t know that.

Fascinating, but very disturbing that people can’t be comfortable in their own skin. I don’t think that 20 year olds realize that there is a natural drop off in appearance in your mid 30’s. If they are bothered by extremely small flaws in their youth, they will have a huge psychological problem as they age beyond their 40’s. Excellent video. 🙌🏾

I think everyone ages at their own pace. Some people start getting wrinkles in their late 20s, for some people that's their late 40s. It depends on genetics and lifestyle. We can make generalized comments such as "adults typically lose facial volume as they age" or "skin loses elasticity with age" but I wouldn't go so far as to say certain things happen at (insert narrow age range here). For some people visual aging happens very slow and gradual, for other people a lot of it happens within the span of 3 to 5 years. I heard a story told by a psychiatrist about a woman who looked young until early 50s, then visually aged quite quickly and her mind couldn't keep up with the changes in the mirror so she ended up having an episode of psychosis. I don't know if it's true but it's definitely something to consider. I think we could all benefit of a strong sense of self/identity that is unrelated to our appearance.

Thanks for addressing this Shelby. As an attractive person yourself it will hit harder than if an unattractive person said it. I’ve felt the effects of this for years. I’m overweight but had a brief period where I lost 100lbs and boy did I get treated better. And it stopped when my weight went back on. Whenever I’ve tried to tell people pretty privilege is a thing I get gaslit. So thank you. Also skinny privilege is a thing too but that’s really a part of pretty privilege

Seed vegetable oils degrade in your body bc they are made rancid through the production and need heavy chemicals to strip that rancid oxidation off so they basically build your body with shit that will break down in 10+ years. That plus processed food and meats. Anyone would get fat...lit the shuff is banned in most of Europe. Eliminate vegetable oils and she will loose weight and the skin might actually get done elasticity back

I realized many years ago that racism is all based on standard of beauty. And pale skin fits the standard of beauty for most people from most culture backgrounds. That’s the main reason people with whiter skin colour always get treated better and gain more privilege. Taking Michael Jackson for example.

There's a Netflix documentary called "White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch" that showed how the company became very successful in the late 90's to early 2000's. In a nutshell, they exploited the phenomenon that Shelby is talking about. They would stick their more attractive associates in the front of the store to deal with the customers, and their less attractive associates were stuck in the back of the store where they would organize inventory, returns etc. and were out of sight of the customers. It was a very dehumanizing strategy, but sadly it was very effective.

I think that the fact that cosmetic surgery trends are cycling so quickly now is scary. For a long time it was a relatively limited range of things people could do but it seems like for a while now the options and trends are coming and going so fast but our bodies can't possibly swing from one procedure to the next and be ok over a lifetime. At some point there has to be an acknowledgement that we can't all possibly look the same.

Love this. This is AMPLIFIED in South Korea. Some corporate jobs will offer women “maintenance stipends” for beauty procedures, makeup, cosmetics, etc. so much of socio economic mobility depend on how you look and how people view you during first impressions. The standards are impossibly high and ever changing. For example, right now a “short nose” is trending rather than an elongated nose. So makeup, plastic surgeons, fillers, photo filters all follow the trend and flip flop when it changes. I’d love for you to dig in more maybe in a follow up episode!

I have a small amount of forehead botox and a half syringe of lip filler and I feel like that's all I'm interested in right now, although I am considering in the future having a bleph done. I think anyone should do whatever they want with their face, but I always encourage people to start very small. It's easier to add more than take away. I want to avoid the highly fake look of a ton of filler and botox and other procedures, but the botox and lip filler I have are genuinely some of the best investment I've made in myself because it makes a subtle difference that overall makes me really confident.

I never understood why men stressed so much about hair loss and get a hair transplant. I started losing my hair when I was 18. Shaving my head boosted my confidence way more than any hair transplant ever could. I don't regret it a single bit. It comes from the mindset of just owning it.

I agree it’s best to just own it ☺️But to be honest, some men have funny shaped heads & being bald doesn’t suit their looks. Also being bald makes you look older than you are! And some men may not want that. They want to maintain their youthful looks. Having hair changes the way your face looks to society & it also increased your chances of being matched on online dating. Men with hair are assumed to be healthier. Although we know that’s not always true, but that’s just the assumptions people make lol 😂 so I can understand why men would chose to go through with a hair transplant, but I also think it’s better to just love your bald head and have the confidence that comes from within ❤

People don't understand the risk of a mediocre or bad result. Want a mole removed or a scar made less apparent? There's a 99 percent chance of a good result. But many plastic surgeries onlly fix one problem to create new problems. Take facelift for example, it solves the problem of facial wrinkles by removing skin. The wrinkles are gone (problem solved) but the patient now has an "always surprised" look (new problem).

Great chat Shelby, I agree with all your points. I'm 55 and had botox on my crows feet and eyebrows twice and I absolutely loved it. I feel like my eyes have always been my best feature and it really made me feel like I looked more youthful and gave me confidence even though no one I knew could tell I had it done - not even my partner. I do want to have it again but it's so expensive and at this point in my life I think I'd rather spend money on travel, but who knows, maybe I'll do it again.

Use high quality castor oil (cold press at the minimum, better organic quality). It has to be kept in a dark bottle (a brown) and prefereably most of it in the fridge. The oil is very thick so you need little. It has antiinflammatory properties, is also used on things like warts, boils, skin tags. And I read that it can lighten discolorations of skin (redness, but also age spots). Watched a video before of a woman 74 years (in Vancouver) that used it on those spots and also on a scar on her knee. And she thinks it has softened her crow feets (she has very good skin) and she says she sees a difference after 30 days use. LIkely the oil keeps moisture in. People also report that the face is a bit plumped up (in a good way).

Shelby I think this is one of your best video's yet.. You have opened my eyes to this pretty privilege issue I kind of always knew it but really didn't want to believe it. I was always the chubby but had a pretty face but as I aged in the work place I could see management giving more attention to those who fit that image better. I find this all so sad and pitiful. They other issue you mentioned was the products that were being placed into the body and what internal damage it is doing these folks. I am always getting crap about how I won't get knee replacement because I'm allergic to all metals people just don't want to know what can happen to your insides. Years ago a newsmagazine type show (maybe 60 Minutes) had people go to job interviews. They had the exact same resumes, but some were "hot" and some were not. You guessed it, they offered jobs or second interviews to all of the attractive people. This has been going on since the beginning of time unfortunately.

I had rhinoplasty. My nose wasn’t terrible but it was arched and unfortunately not really functional, terrible septum, overgrown turbines - I couldn’t breathe properly so I was getting throat infections because of mouth breathing and snoring… Because I didn’t really like my nose anyway (as a child I was called a witch because of my nose) - I just went for full nose surgery and I am really happy about it. No throat infections, no breathing issues and I look much better - but I feel that if I would change anything else in my face, I would look like all the IG ladies with the same faces… So I will keep my small lips.

Love that you’re talking about this subject! I find the normalization of plastic surgery to be extremely sad, especially when we know that very young women are taking in this messaging. When I was a teenager, I was very insecure about the bump on the bridge of my nose. Thank goodness the idea of a nose job wasn’t hammered into my mind, because now that I’m almost thirty, it doesn’t bother me AT ALL. The idea of young me undergoing plastic surgery to “fix” something so benign is sickening.

After watching vids on this topic and then this video, it's all i can think about when there's a trend of people starting to get surgery to look the same... so weird and scary, and i remember reading that book as a kid and it really sticking with me!

I had an episode of feeling ugly and thinking of how I would've been so much better now socially had I been prettier, thought that beauty is a natural selection method and that it's ingrained in us, but then I remembered once again how beauty is relative no matter how objective we try to make it, in the end beauty is nature itself manifesting. Certainly when we get old it doesn't matter anymore...

I had Jaw surgery to fix my chewing (ur vids really helped btw, you got urs done a few months before me). After I had a more ‘normal’ looking jaw and straight teeth people definitely treated me differently. I’m a male and before my underbite made me look more scary, I feel like women are much more comfortable approaching me and are definitely much nicer to me now.

I’m a hair transplant surgical tech. It’s not a painful procedure at all. Yes, it’s a lengthy one but we make it as comfortable as possible and you are given a light sedation (Versed) which helps make the time go by quicker. It’s really the only permanent plastic surgery procedure out there.

I have a farm and have employed 100s of backpackers over the years. I observed what you are discussing (pretty privilege) amongst them, the more attractive men and women were more forward, often more friendly. I LOVED that series "Uglies", "Pretties" and "Specials". It's a dystopian series on beauty standards. But with a dark twist - upon putting you to sleep for your surgery they altered your brain composition to stop critical thinking and make you think and accept whatever the government wanted you to.

Great video, Shelby! You said it is normal for people to get veneers and other cosmetic surgery starting at age 18. Well, maybe in your neck of the woods, but I don't know anyone who has gotten much if any work done.

Pretty disadvantage is also real. Male attention can be so intrusive (catcalling, harassment, stalking, aggression). Female jealousy and competitiveness is another thing. The unwanted attention pretty woman gets everywhere she goes gets traumatic unless she learns to turn it to her advantage and protects herself.

19:33 For what its worth, Erin Moriarty has denied ever receiving plastic surgery. The two photos were taken ten years apart, and she's wearing heavy makeup in the second photo which can alter her face structure to the naked eye. Sadly, she received such backlash that she quit all of her social media platforms.

What a great commentary video. I can’t remember the last time i sat through a long format youtube video without fast forwarding at some points. I watched this all the way through. I’m definitely going to check your other videos out since this was my first one. I am average looking and a size 14/16 but thankfully i never felt the need to get surgery. Lose weight, yes, bc in asian culture being skinny = being pretty. But now i exercise for my health and less so to look hot or whatever. People never believe im a size L/XL bc i have learned to dress for my body type. But when i went to korea last fall i did feel a bit down bc literally none of the clothes fit me there. The largest size they had was a L or even more commonly “free size” except you would need to be a size like 4/6 to fit those garments. I was relieved to get back to the US and not feel this pressure to be stick thin. I could never live there. You even have to put a picture on your resume in korea so looks really matter.

Another topic you might want to get into on a future vlog. How Fat people are treated very differently from thin people. Looks cast aside, even just being a certain size will bring you positive or negative interactions from people. Thin people are treated better by society. I loved this vlog. I definitely believe pretty privilege exists. I wish people were just judged by their character.

I agree with you that people should be judged by their character.That being said, fat people who are beautiful still have privileges and are deemed acceptable by societal standards. I would argue that being overweight matters way less on how you are treated than if you are beautiful. Looks triumph body in my experience. It’s not right, but that is how it is.

I cannot tell you how much this video means to me. I went through a period of "pretty privilege". As I've gotten older, I've certainly lost a lot of that. Having a "big chicken nose" has held me back in many ways. Despite the severe bullying that had caused me to almost unalive myself, I've decided to be confident with who I am. This "big nose" comes from my Native American heritage, so I'm going to embrace it! If someone doesn't like it, then they clearly have a narrow view of beauty.

Wow! First, very well-done video! A++! Next, never had any cosmetic procedures done, but I have a deviated septum that I can't breathe through almost 100% of the time (I can occasionally breathe through that nostril, but the rhyme or reason is completely random). It affects my sleep and my mood, and I totally feel so much better when I pull on my face to open that nostril and can suddenly breathe through it - like it feels amazing! All that to say, I'm seriously considering getting that fixed, and while I'm at it, having the end of my nose fixed too (it looks like it's perpetually swollen). And due to my age, I'm also considering a face lift. But it will probably be a few years before I do anything. As far as the alien look - I absolutely hate it. I try not to judge people, but I find that look so over-the-top a d repugnant, it's hard not to judge people. It's as ridiculous as the women who would get breast implants the size of milking cow udders. I also can't stand the way lip fillers look. That whole duck or bubble lips look is just so heinous, I don't understand why women are doing it. And the BBL is creepy as well.

Shelby: #1 - you are a very attractive girl so don't change yourself. You have a natural look to you and keep that. Don't look like one of these people who looks like they were manufactured in a warehouse. #2 - these people who have had multiple plastic surgeries and I can count them with my untrained eye, it goes beyond wanting to look better. There's a body dysmorphia I guess is the phrase that I am looking for that becomes a very dangerous addiction. Less and less people seem to become happy with their natural selves because of social media and its ashame.

I think that addressing pretty privilege is a good thing, as it gives us a glimpse of what our society values, and it easily explains why so many people resort to getting cosmetic procedures done to correct what general consensus as deemed as 'unattractive'. While it has always existed, today social media has managed to amplify this phenomenon, and it is affecting younger people in ways that can really be very negative to their self esteem. One example I can think of is little girls using a barrage of skin products that aren't even manufactured for skin that isn't mature. Additionally, it must be added that pretty privilege is closely associated with age, as looks are bigger driver for people under 40 than those who already start to show signs of aging. At some point, the field levels out, as no matter how attractive a person is, their age will certainly limit dating options and access to certain jobs. That's why it is important to focus on personal growth, professional achievements, learning how to be happy. Surgery is good as long as it makes the person happy, not to please others. Good topic to discuss, I'd love to get some insight from my teen daughter and friends.

I agree with getting 1 or 2 procedures done to improve that thing that has been holding someone back. But this new trend of fixing everything till you look like unnatural, well is just a trend... that sadly, when it's over... people will not be able to reverse.

I 100% agree... I've also had this thought that many people are starting to look similar (especially celebrities) because they are all getting the same procedures done. its definitely rooted in low confidence in appearances. I also think about how normalised it is for girls to work on their appearanes because society does value "beauty".... I've come to the conculsion that the only way to combat this is to love your self and your flaws... its hard especially in this society ... but its the only way to truly have peace of mind... and in the end people love people because of who they are not what they look like and if it is about looks then its not a relationship I'm interested.

I think it’s true for men as much as women. Look at the executive level of most organizations they’re a lot of men and most would be considered conventionally handsome. Years ago a supervisor made a comment about me as a joke “they pop you guys out of molds” meaning over 6 feet tall and 200 plus pounds well built becoming managers and climbing ranks. It fits.

I originally thought pretty privilege was exclusive to natural beauty and handsomeness. I agree with the 1 or 2 things to help boost confidence but I would prefer if our culture encouraged natural remedies, eating healthy, living healthy, to work on self, to work on spirituality, and to be happy. Its so weird to see peopke think that pretty people are nicer, better more good than common people. I had the opposite reaction especially because of where I grew up. All the pretty people were actually mean and had nothing going for themselves except for their looks. Also they were not really nice at all. None of them wanted to be friends with people who didnt want to do what they did. So the girls wore lots of makeup and the guys played sports. If you didnt like either of those things, they didnt talk to you. Even now, no one i know thats considered pretty even cares about common people.

I might use the word bias instead of privilege. I remember writing a paper in college on this topic. This was a very long time ago, but I remember reading that people were more likely to associate mental illness with less attractive people as opposed to attractive people. That makes me think of Ted Bundy as he was considered attractive. I agree with much of this. I just don't like the word privilege. Maybe because I feel we are blaming those who are attractive. Everyone was created to be themselves and we also shouldn't discriminate against attractive people, but it is so true that attractive people usually get so much more attention. But that does not mean the attention is love.

Years ago when I was teen I couldnt look on people with disabilities, with twisted faces, hands and etc, even just quick look on them made my stomach sick...long story in short ....i was forced by situation to spend some time aorund all those people as more than full time job, I had to literally deny myself, overcome my self feelings and with repeating over and over "they just people lile evrebody else". After couple months my all negative feelings and symptoms disappeared. After , again, few months I couldnt even imagine not to be around those people, their inner heart !, their happiness!, their free judgemental attitude, made me feel....i couldn't even imgaine not to work there!!!! All very ugly and disgusting for this world are the most gold heart to those who looking for real relationship! I missed those moments in my life when i never felt lonely. So here are my pennies about "privilege to be trully loved"!
