I think the movie definitely wanted us to see the Illuminati of that world as a bunch of arrogant dicks, who deserved what was, coming to them (with the possible exception of Charles). Everyone whining about how they ‘wasted’ Reed Richards and Black Bolt, etc need to realise that these were always meant to be disposable carbon copies, whose main purpose was to be brutally and easily killed by Wanda. The Reed, Charles and Black Bolt (if he gets brought into the main MCU) of Earth-616 will clearly be far harder to kill, as they will have some of the finest plot armour known to man…

I think that was my bigger problem... firstly, this isn't really a Dr. Strange movie, it was a Scarlet Witch movie. Then, when you look at it as a Scarlet Witch movie, Wanda's story arc was the same... the SAME EXACT story arc from s01 of Wandavision. Wanda loses someone that she loves. She's grief stricken and wants then back. Breaks the world to get them back. Realizes that because she didn't process her grief, she became the villain. Beat for beat. Had they made this a Scarlet Witch movie, it could have freed them up a bit... and Multiverse of Madness could have been a fantastic episodic series.

My takeaway after watching it, is that this movie was the actual finale/compressed, high-budget season 2 of WandaVision, featuring Dr. Strange. The only reason I would see a disconnect between the end of WandaVision and the start of this movie is that WandaVision failed to plant the seed that the Darkhold corrupts the reader, however, I feel like the movie made that abundantly clear (as did the Agents of SHIELD season that features the Darkhold). In my opinion, America Chavez is not developed nearly enough to be anything more than a Human McGuffin, even though the plot heavily depends on the audience caring about her as a character. The only development we do get comes across to me as a teaser/setup for her to appear in another MCU production. Similarly, Dr. Strange pretty much only has the "Are you happy?" subplot which is... never resolved? Unless I missed something, he just admits that he isn't happy and that saving the world didn't make him happy, but he doesn't change his relationship with 616-Christine, he doesn't change his role among sorcerers, and he doesn't change or grow as a character. He just inexplicably gets that 3rd eye from the Other, Other, Other Strange. I think this movie should have been "Wanda in the Multiverse of Madness", and it should have featured her gradual corruption by the Darkhold instead of cutting from the moment she started reading it at the end of WandaVision to her already corrupted state at the start of this movie. Dr. Strange trying to protect America Chavez would still have made for a decent "antagonist" (especially since his final form when fighting her was him dream walking into his own corpse, which can so easily be portrayed as villainy), but it would feel less like Strange and Chavez weren't developed if the film didn't try to make them the protagonists. I have to give the movie props for bringing up a discussion that I felt was sorely lacking from No Way Home, which is how Strange is always on the very edge of what is considered "doing the right thing". I would've liked to see that have a more lasting impact on Strange, especially since he used extremely forbidden magic AGAIN to fight against Wanda.

I saw the "are you happy?" plot as being completely resolved -- Strange admits to Illuminativerse Christine that he loves her but was never able to really show it because he was scared, and she encourages him to face his fears, i.e. don't close himself off from other people and always go it alone (always be the one holding the scalpel, so to speak). And you can see he's taken that advice to heart in his final conversation with Wong, after Wong says he's grateful for his life even with all its tribulations, and Strange replies that at least they have each other to get through those tribulations together. First movie!Strange and/or Strange at the beginning of MoM wouldn't have said that.

I can say that the film has a weak script, BUT, the direction did its job and did it well (with some mistakes like starting already in chaos and also putting a battle of songs in a "heavy" film like this). What that left an entertaining and "watchable" movie. "Why do I have this conflict of opinion in the movie"? Usually this happens when you end up not liking some technical detail. Which in this case may be the inconsistency of Wanda's character with previous films/series, the downgrade they gave to Doctor Strange, or even the lack of more "smart" solutions and endings. It's just a guess.

my main theory for what’s next regarding at least the mystic arts portion of the mcu is that wanda’s destruction of the darkhold in every timeline and her multiversal evil has had some real effects on the fabric of magic itself. she broke her own destiny. i don’t believe she’s really dead but i think she’ll be gone for a little while as Lizzie has said she needs a little break but does want to come back i assume she’ll be revealed as alive in another movie and then get some kind of solo project. and this could tackle the 2015 scarlet witch solo series last days of magic story where she has to travel the world in search for answers and how to fix the fabric of magic all while learning a lot about her own family and past. and basically i think that’s a good way of her atoning for her actions possibly sacrificing some of her power to fix magic so she’s not undefeatable and the family ties thing could possibly retcon her dad as magneto. this is an incredibly ambitious theory i do understand that i’m prepared for the possibility that literally none of this will happen but it’s a direction i think would be cool for them to go in.

But the ride home I thought about the movie more as just a part of the greater whole of Marvel Phase 4, the more I loved it. I was very happy with where all the story arcs went and were resolved. Especially Wanda/SW. I loved how they made her eyes really shadowed like she was physically being possessed by the Darkhold, and you could see that Wanda was gone, this was Darkhold possessing the Scarlett Witch using the trauma and memories in Wanda as the steering wheel. And seeing her genuinely unstoppable, except by herself (and the look in her children's eyes at what she had let herself become). Ugh, perfect.

So... I'll just say this. If we're put this movie right next to the previous one and put the whole Avengers story and Wandavision somewhere in the background - it really feels like there is at least 4-6 hours of story missing between those movies. If 1st Dr Strange is the "first" chapter of a book, 2nd movie feels like chapter 10 or 11.

I enjoyed MoM but I do agree with Adam’s point of this not quite feeling like a movie. For me, it actually was perhaps the first MCU film that felt more like a cinematic comic book rather than what they built up in previous films. It also feels more like a setup film than what most expected. I think allowing more time to let MoM breathe a bit would have helped. Literally from the first 10 seconds till the ending it’s non-stop action and tension. Interestingly, Raimi said his first cut was much longer (by about 35 minutes). I wonder how much of that could have changed the pacing.

My main take away: I genuinely think the future of the MCU might be in television. This would have worked better as a mini-series on Disney+ as a matter of pacing, and so we could have explored some stuff for longer. The best format might honestly be Disney+ Shows as the individual hero stories, and movies for the big crossover “Event” stories. Stuff like your Civil Wars, Flashpoint, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Secret Wars, those things are the big screen, while the shows will let us really get each hero. SPOILERS: Why is anyone complaining about the Illuminati dying? It’s the multiverse! We can find another one, and those characters aren’t dead in the actual 616 dimension (many don’t exist there anyways). Like… who cares? Call me Owlman, but in the end we can just get Illuminati from Earth-555 or whatever. Ultimately I summed it up as this: the pacing in this movie is absolute DOGSHIT. *But* it’s such a FUN movie, that I don’t care. I was more than willing to accept the bad pacing in order to get more of that good stuff within one film.

I don't know if this was already answered somewhere, but Charlize Theron's character is Clea, daughter of Dormammu. In the comics she eventually marries Steven, so she is commonly known as Clea Strange.

I’ve been waiting all day for this review to drop. Before I watch it, I gotta tell a true story. My most rewatched Preview’d video is “What If…?” episode one. The unbridled joy the boys both go through is a true delight, but Adam’s immediate infatuation with Captain Carter as a character steals the show. To wit, as I’m watching a movie out in real life, during Peggy’s demise scene, my brain whispered to me, “oh man. Adam Lash is gunna be furious.”. Parasocial relationships are weird. Welp. Time to watch the Preview’d review.

They call those eyes-on-the-camera moments "burning the lense," it's like the first thing you learn not to do as a filmmaker. It's a rule you don't break, except when you do. Go back and watch the end of Back to the Future again, there's a moment when Doc Brown does it just before lightning hits the tree. In the right moments it really pulls you in, but it's not the same thing as a 4th wall break.

Hi guys! I really enjoy your reviews. The answer to the Charlize Theron question is she portrays Clea who escaped from another dimension and took refuge with Dr. Strange for a while. He taught her the mystic arts and she became a love interest for a time (this is going back to the 80s in the Dr. Strange books). My brother and I totally got excited when she appeared as we never imagined that character would be included in these films. Also, my brother had the same feeling as you both do in regards to the movie being a vehicle from point A to point B for the MCU.

I’d argue Adam’s point, that it is not a movie...but it’s more akin to a TV movie that ends a series. I mean there were reports Strange was supposed to show up and speak to Wanda at the end of WandaVision, that was cut maybe due to Covid rearing it’s head at the time. So I feel like it’s more an extension than a film on its own. I enjoyed it, hell someone I went with enjoyed it that hadn’t seen WandaVision, but I still wonder how confused they got because of how necessary it was.

Maybe Disney/Marvel has streaming analytics from Wanda Vision and What If that is more than we expect that gives them the confidence to start a movie with Wanda at the place she's at. I mean to be honest... I think it's time to admit that we are in a new age of storytelling formats that the gap between a Disney+ mini series (equal to a 3 movie trilogy in runtime) and an actual cinema 3ish movie franchise (i.e. Dr. Strange) is practically nonexistent. People have in home theatres, or insane personal viewing experiences, that on a comfort level rival sitting in a movie seat for many types of people. and Cinema got so damaged during lockdowns that the miniseries caught up in the viewers priorities of "where do i get show/movie at". I even predict that miniseries will eventually get special runs on actual cinema. Like a 5 hour cinema experience of Mando Season 2. Point I'm getting at is I dont think you should be concerned about someone not seeing the show, I think more people have seen the show than people realize. That PLUS we are definitely now in a time where it is WORLDLY KNOWN that jumping in to a marvel movie or show TODAY is an "at your own risk" situation. Like, a random new viewer will understand jumping into marvel studios release #40something, would be like me jumping in to Dr. Who right now, having never seen it, and wondering what's going on and why i don't know all the backstory. So I think in the end this movie is definitely safe to start it out the way it did for a "movie" stand point, because the parameters for these releases are its own new unique thing. A new age of cinema. BUT I'm HIGH as FUuuuuuuuQQ so don't take me to seriously :) LOVE YOU GUYS

The assertion that this was 2 hours of Marvel content really resonated with me. Spoilers There were times when I leaned over to my wife during the film and went “this really is a Sam Raimi joint, isn’t it?”. The zombie, the Shaky Attack Cam (tm), the Bruce Campbell cameo, all trademark Raimi. Oh, and mercing the Illuminati after hyping them up was just *chef’s kiss*. Also, letting the Superior Iron Man rumours fly about as a smokescreen for John Krasinski’s cameo was genius. I’m sure someone else has already said it, but Charlize Theron is playing Clea, who is Strange’s apprentice in the comics. It took me a sec to realise who she was playing because I completely forgot she was in the film. I also envisioned the writer’s room conversation about the fight against Third Eye Strange going something like this: Raimi: “I want them to have a music fight.” Writers: “You mean a dance fight?” Raimi: “No, I don’t.” 😂

I strongly disagree that it “wasn’t a movie”. Every character had an arc. America realizing how to use her powers and become a hero. Realizing that she maybe didn’t kill her parents. And even in that, finding a father figure in Doctor Strange. It’s a real coming of age arc for Miss Chavez in this film. Wanda, coming in from WandaVision completely corrupted by the dark hold, taking the Vader roll. Going full Darth Vader but the film keeps reminding us that she IS a good person. She made massive mistakes. Unforgivable mistakes. The scene when Chavez opens the portal to other Wanda’s home is just phenomenal character stuff for the Maximoff character. And by the end she destroys the Darkhold. And Strange has to come to grips with his arrogance in EVERY universe. Fallout from his own arrogance. He also gets closure with Christine, albeit from another universe. I just don’t agree with it being “not a film”.

I thought it was a perfectly natural progression, Wanda was a radicalized youth experimented on and manipulated by hydra, is the reason the sakovia accords were drafted, traumatized from having to kill Vision, then watched Thanos reverse time only to kill Vision in front of her again, makes a nope bubble and enslaves an entire town manifesting children and a new Vision, is manipulated by Agatha, relents to reality after defeating Agatha, takes the darkhold for herself, is haunted by dreams of her children, finds out what dreams actually are from reading the darkhold, slowly becomes more and more corrupted every time she read from the book, then starts dream walking to find her kids... and ppl are surprised she was the bad guy??? lol Charlice Theron was Clea, a powerful sorcerer, niece to Dormamu, and eventual waifu to Dr. Strange

spoiler comment: . . . . . . my fave scene was 100% the scene where the copy of the darkhold gets destroyed and it keeps cutting between scarlet witch and the dreamwalk wanda with her kids - the quick cutting between the two universes without sound where the shots of her with her kids gradually get rarer so you could suddenly feel the distance between her and her kids and having no fade between the shots made it way more traumatising of how quickly it was disconnecting. it was the scene where my heart truly broke to see her on her knees failing to get her kids where it so perfectly showed how lonely and completely too far gone she was. really solidified how she had zero doubt in her that she needed them

"its not really in movie format" - OMG thank you this is exactly what I was thinking. Loved the movie, love Dr Strange but man I came out just confused and feeling like nothing had been accomplished. 1. Bad marketing - it was presented as changing the marvel universe forever? Nah its more a Wanda and Stephen adventure about their worlds and has nothing to do with anything or anyone else. I expected so much more due to how it was marketed. 2. What happens to all the characters we meet in 828 world : did any of that mean anything? probably not just gave Wanda people to kill. Can we all agree Black Bolt just doesn't work as a character, I came away from that more confused about the future of the MCU than anything 3. I needed more explanation of the idea that in every other of the 73 universes A Chavez had visited Stephen made the WRONG decision and either died or ended up in a personal hell alone. But they never SHOW those failures helping me better understand the narrative arc here that OUR Stephen will make the right choice and not take her powers in the end. I needed a montage scene of all the other times A Chavez had been with a DR S and he made the wrong choice, just like 2 minutes of 10 examples would have made a world of difference. 4. Wanda - there is no way in hell as a fan of Wanda Vision I was ready for her to full villain from the start. The "I didn't tell you her name" scene seemed lazy. We needed more to understand how she used the Darkhold to summon demons and all the attempts she had already made to capture A Chavez before our Stephen ever gets involved and goes to see her. Ultimately my biggest take away was that in Spider Man we got a film where the main character grew as a person and I feel did something accomplished something, something changed with everyone forgetting him and i understood how Spiderman could work in the MCU in the future PLUS most importantly the use of Toby and Andrew had a huge payoff for them in and of themselves to give them a shout out and credit for their great work, it felt like it meant something. In MoM the payoff just isn't there - we are left in the same basic place with Stephen with very little growth or accomplishment other than just avoiding the problem of Wanda and all the extra characters have zero pay off because well they all die so did it even matter? never gonna see them again right? confusion

SPOLIERS......... (Only for people who have watched the film) I wonder if we'll ever see Earth-838 again the universe where most of the film is set. Also find it really interested that this reality has the X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the Inhumans already co existing together while the MCU has still yet to introduce these teams. This universe with the benefit of having Mr fantastic is also a little bit more advantaged than our mainline Earth-616 but i'm assuming it's set in the late 2020s as well as all the characters are around the same age. Maybe What If Season 2 will dive more into this and other universe's maybe even showing the aftermath of the Scarlet Witches attack. You can't expect the hero's of Earth-838 to let Wanda off the hook she pretty much butchered all the Team Leaders. On the topic of Earth-616 now being the MCU maybe the comic universe's were destroyed or isolated in The Multiverse War mentioned in Loki which created a Pre Multiverse War Earth-616 that is the MCU. This could also be the case for the ultimate Universe as well which could've combined with Earth-616 explaining why Nick Fury for example looks like his Ultimate counterpart along with stuff like the origins of certain hero's. Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse also uses versions of Earth-616 and The Ultimate Universe with the Ultimate universe being a little different to it's comic counterpart for example how it's Peter died so who knows how the movies treat these comic universes. I think people just don't think people want the MCU to replace Earth-616 from the comic's which is understandable but besides my theory on the Multiverse War there's no other explanation on how we could have the comic Earth-616 universe and a live action Earth-616 universe.

Charlize Theron is playing Clea, the daughter of Dormammu and the most common love interest/wife of Dr. Strange in the comics.
