One of the best things about Ta Lo are the creatures. They are all mythical creatures belonging in Chinese fables/stories and taught to us when young. For instance the two awesome lions always come in a pair and are guardian lions who would appear on the gates of Chinese families’ homes on both ends. It’s just incredible for me to see Chinese culture depicted well in the MCU. AND the spoken mandarin are actually perfect mandarin!

the comment about the pacing of the movie being like a music, i just want to say that if you're familiar with it, the pacing is very chinese/asian movie. it feels nostalgic for me personally and i don't know why, it felt more like a chinese film with marvel budget for me. and it says a lot for the director who pays attention to the source media and actually bringing all the culture to the big screen for more international fans. the fact that they casted some of asian movies legends there! not just michelle yeoh and tony leung, but yuen wah (the archer master in ta lo) who some people might recognize from the dozens of old chinese movies, it felt rewarding for us asians. on another note; i accidentally stumbled across this channel and i'm loving the way you guys do reviews, it feels so genuine and sincere the way you guys are excited about the shows you watch. thank you so much for the hard work!! cheers from your new subscriber :)

So I gave this movie an 8/10. I thought it was amazing! I saw it on IMAX And I’m not thinks lie when the Marvel opener rolled in with that music I got chills and a little emotional. I missed watching Marvel movies in the theater. Some thoughts: -The music was AMAZING! -The dad was done in such a great way. Like, he’s not a bad guy, he’s just letting grief cloud his judgement. I wonder if it was intentional or a coincidence that this movie came out the same week as the Dr Strange episode of What If. Both make awful decisions based on grief. -The Martial Arts was so masterfully done. They didn’t rely on powers, but used them in tandem with the fighting to accentuate it and I thought it was awesome. -I thought Awkwafina was honestly gonna annoy me, but her character was great! As y’all said, she was the audiences reaction to everything going on. -That dam Koala-Chicken-Dog with wings. I was so uncomfortable looking at that thing. Like WHERE IS YOUR FACE?! -I thought when they were explaining the cave that if it broke down, that maybe it would effect the multiverse? I mean with everything else going on it seemed logical lol. I was wrong though. -That first credit scene oh my gawwwwd that was awesome! Bringing back Banner and Danvers! I loved that! REALLY amazing movie!!!

SPOILERS I liked it. I liked it a lot, but there are things that keep me from loving it. I loved the family drama aspect, especially involving the Mandarin (surprisingly my favorite part of the whole film). Thought Shang was a fine character, but what I didn't like was that so much his character was undefined in regards to how he feels about his heritage with his mom as well as with his dad. I think part of that is because we didn't see the moment in which he killed his mom's killer. We got EXCELLENT understanding of who he was as a kid and the father-son dynamic up until he killed the man, but not as much after that. There was basically no underlying hint of his "inner trained killer" for any moment up until he tells Aquafina about it(we literally had no clue that he couldbe been a killer up until he said which I see as an issue) and decides to kill his father (which he decides not to for kinda undefined reasons other than the obvs moral idea that it would be wrong because there was no resolution after that with him finding closure with his dad). I did like Mandarin saving Shang and gifting him the rings, but I feel that something was still missing. Maybe just need to see it again. I think tho that it's because Shang himself was so undefined. As for the other characters, thought Aquafina was a decent comic relief who was funny at times but also not sometimes. Decent dynamic with Shang and believable chemistry, but missing sense of development toward the end. Shangs sister was probs the weakest part of the movie to me. Before anyone jumps on the wagon saying "you just don't like strong female characters!" Hear me out, it's because she is not easy to connect to. The aspect of animosity toward Shang for leaving and neglect from her father was fine, but what was missing among the flashbacks was us seeing the inciting event that caused her to decide to change (she probably didn't just wake up one day going from sad/lonely to angry and rebellious). There's also the idea that she became as good as Shang simply by self training with no instructors, and no resources either after running away which I don't find very believable without seeing it. We clearly saw Shangs effort and dedication which made us connect, but not with her really. We also didn't see the effort she must have went through to start a whole damn empire of her own or even why she'd want to do what her father did. These are the kinds of things that define a character but they were missing. All we get is her saying she did those things and a delivery that made them sound like it was just easy and no big deal. These things just made her seem wooden and kinda a black hole of a character for me for the whole film, save maybe the flashback of Shang leaving her where I did feel synpathy for her child self. But basically what I'm trying to say is that audiences don't connect with characters for things they did that were easy for them, but for things that were hard for them to do; and we didn't see her do the supposedly hard things in her life. As for Shangs Aunte, I don't think we got enough to see her as anyone interesting. I know she's a minor character, but I think either a flashback or some exposition about her relationship to Shangs mom would've helped a bunch. As for Ta Lo, it was a very visually cool world with cool creatures etc, but we got basically no history of it or it's culture/rules. It would've helped to at the very least have some structure or maybe Ta Lo's best warriors guarding the entrance to that portal thing. That way we could get a sense of who they are through the action they take to guard what is seemingly an important part of the lores history and the Mandarin having to fight through it. The final act was also hit or miss for me. I love me some great action etc, but only if I care for the characters/story involved or know why they are there. The whole other dimension soul sucker plot thing was introduced through such heavy exposition so late in the film that I honestly didn't care for the significance of it. I was so much more invested in the fight between Shang and his father and was kinda bummed when his death just got brushed aside to make way for big flying monsters cgi fight to take up the whole rest of the third act. I mean it was pretty cool and all, but I think the lack of understanding/connection to Ta Lo and its dragon made it hard for me to see what the dragon was to Shang and his sister. There was obvsly a connection, but for very vague and unclear reasons unless I missed something. Basically the dragons fight just felt a bit hollow despite some genuinely cool moments because that's all it was. A cool fight that didn't really add any depth to the third act or really conclude it in a meaningful way. A final act like that is fine for something like a Bayformers movie or Fast & Furious film or even some other Marvel films, but not this one. I'll take the final act of The Suicide Squad over this because it means something: the Squad finding purpose, represented through their decision to ignore Waller and through the rats which represent the Squad themselves as the lowliest of the world, but both in those moments doing something good. Basically there was more going on beneath the surface level of just a bunch of rats swarming a giant starfish. I think that Shang-Chi needed some of this because it was an emotionally deep film about family drama at its core so it needed it an emotional conclusion to go with the cool factor. Maybe by having Mandarin die by sacrificing himself to give Shang and opening to kill the monster, paying for his mistakes? Have the moment of gifting all ten rings to him happen in those moments? And even have the fight against the soul sucker dragon involve some creative teamwork between Shang and his father as they each use half the rings? Have the teamwork they do be the factor which leads Mandarin to deem Shang strong enough for the rings as he gains a sense of his strength outside of just fighting against him? I find this much more compelling than having Aquafinas lucky shot being what turns the tide. As for Mandarin being my fav part of the whole film, it's because of his raw emotional drive for his goals. He's a villain and a warlord, but driven by love for a lie being cast upon him that what was lost can be restored. After us, the audience, seeing that the mother is in fact dead and that it is some magical influence making him think shes still out there somewhere, it became absolutely heartbreaking seeing him so desperate to get her back and wish for her presence. There is one scene in the whole film that made me tear up, and one scene that gave me a real sense of anger/pain. Both with the Mandarin. The tear up scene is of him in his office but hearing her voice and seeing a vision of her sitting just a rooms distance away. Not only is he being manipulated, but he is truly longing for her and in grief. His expressions are what did it, the man can act and was so believable in everything he did and said. The other scene is the flashback of him taking young Shang to beat up a gang connected his wife's murder. I know that he hurt them first in the past, but it's his regret for taking off the rings and showing weakness being what gave his enemies the courage to strike back which truly made his actions understandable, beating when down that gang. It was him just walking straight to the center of the room and snapping, demolishing the table and killing them that made me feel for a second his rage and pain. And, as wrong morally as it is, him killing the man in front of his son felt totally understood in what he was trying to teach his son to be and really illustrated clearly why Shang gained the resolve to become strong(again, makes me wonder why we didn't get any point earlier in the film where Shang is shown dealing with the lerking warlord in himself and the trained killer instilled in him as a child, but whatever). As far as the fights go, the bus fight and the building fight are fucking lit and really are amazing with their choreography and cinematograph, which both felt like they really went hand in hand. The fights and combat involving the "airbending" and the rings at the end were a bit less impactful because half the time it just feels like physics and gravity are taking a nap. Like srsly, there is only once or twice in the whole film where a character gets knocked back like 30ft and doesn't land on their feet because they somehow magically stayed upright despite being hit in either the upper half of the body or the lower half. And ofc, you know my thoughts on the cg dragons fight. Anyway this is my main review of the film overall. I didn't cover EVERY detail obvsly like much of the plot etc. I could cuz there are some really distracting and flawed plot conveniences that I noticed, but I'm more of a guy go becomes invested in character rather than plot. Sry this was so long.. Well, hope anyone who reads it got something out of it and feels free to agree or disagree. I apologize for being the one good/bad review in a sea of good reviews.

The guy who designed all the fights was part of Jackie Chan’s stunt team that’s why he did all the stuff using laptops and objects around.

excellent movie. agree with all your points. simu is front man material. ben kingsley stole every scene he was in. great show of his talent with such few lines and little screen time. a testament to his skill, the director's skill, and the writer's skill.

I didn't know anything about Shang-Chi until I watched some of the explainer videos that came out in the last few months. So I went into this movie expecting something like a Jackie Chan Adventures-style adventure flick, and Marvel gave me that EXACTLY. I loved the callbacks throughout, and I'm even more hyped for No Way Home now, because I know we're gonna get some more goodness with Wong~ Maybe even in Eternals too!

Great action and character development. Possibly the best third act except for Infinity War. The only thing keeping this movie from top tier is Awfulfina. They kept bringing her along for no reason other than...hey...comic relief. When he goes to find his sister, that should've been the end of her arc. The rest of the movie, just replace her with Xialing, who was infinitely more compelling.

I liked the movie a lot but I noticed that I had to suspend belief a couple times to make it work. The biggest problem I had was with awkwafina and her never having done archery in her entire life and then she somehow shoots one arrow and it lands directly into the throat of the stink demon??? It was a little too reminiscent of the random rat the saved ant man from the quantum realm to then save the entire universe. Another one was the bus scene and all that crazy shit happens and not a single passenger gets hurt??? I think thats why I appreciate the catalyst of the civil war movie because it addresses the real consequences of their actions - whether they were done with good intent or not. There is real collateral damage that needs to be addressed. Also some of the darker fight scenes were horrible to watch in theater because the shitty theater screens are just not HD enough to handle the fluidity of the camerawork on those fight scenes. That scaffolding scene was so blurry. Overall I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10. I think I wouldve liked it better on my 4k tv at home where I can see everything way better than in the theater.

The spoiler section start at the bus fight? nothing on the Parent's first fight/ flirting sequence? That sequence was awesome. Cool review, but a part of me wanted to see a reaction video, rather than a review. Love your reactions. haha.

Great movie!! Although there was a slow point for me before the final battle. Also I liked that there wasn’t a heavy handed romantic subplot, Katy’s Gma and the lantern scene hinted at it but that was all. Well I guess the romantic subplot was more Wenwu and Shang’s mother but that was also low key.

I loved everything about this film. The combination of classic actors (Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung) and newer ones like Simu Liu is fabulous: they gave it their all. The best possible combo of Marvel, classic kung fu films, heartfelt characterizations, family interactions, and coming of age/hero origins. Katy (Akwafina) is soooooooooo relatable. Michelle Yeoh is a Goddess. Simu is awesome. And Tony Leung... so much subtle, so much stillness... the rest were mighty awesome too.
