This was a fun video to make. I’m still learning and welcome positive, honest feedback. This lighter is from the 1950’s and has a great wrap of some interesting Asian Gods and Buddha.

New subscriber here. Why? Because of the stupid Dad joke and ACTUALLY taking the time during editing to block-out the drilling process!! 🤣 (The restoration was on point, too). Keep the funny attitude man! We are all looking to watch fun content like this. 👊

It was one of my favorites in my collection. Keep a search open on eBay and you might find it again. I’ve see it a few times, even mixed in with a LOT sale of lighters. Best of luck!

Thank you! I'll do this to my lighter. So you use WD 40 at the beginning for 24 hours? Where did you get the new wick?
@HerrTweekCat
@HerrTweekCat 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, WD40, but I’ve gained a lot of experience since this video. If your lighter is in similar condition as this one, you can soak for a lot less time. Start with 30 minutes and see how it’s progressing. Also only on all metal parts. I also use a dish soap to clean the oil and non precious metal jewelry cleaner with a soft toothbrush. I have a ton of junk lighters so I might pull a wick off one if it has a similar gauge. So many lighters will fit the common zippos replacement wicks.

Hello! I have a very similar lighter with the same geared flint wheel as yours. My only problem is that it won’t spark! The wheel won’t spin when the button is pressed due to the steel pushing against it. When the steel isn’t in, it rotates just fine. Any possible tips?
@HerrTweekCat
@HerrTweekCat 3 жыл бұрын
If it’s a brand new flint, it might just need to be struck a few times so the sharp edge is worn off. Maybe try taking out the flint. Then slowly turning the flint wheel. As it rotates, use a small pick to clean the flint wheel. See the video I did for the USMC Evans Lighter. If this doesn’t help let me know and I’ll make some more suggestions.

@@HerrTweekCat looks like that didn’t work :( I was wondering however, what are the teeth on the wheel used for, if there’s nothing moving them?
@HerrTweekCat

I sold this lighter about a year ago so I can’t look at it, but if memory serves there was a small insert that almost looked like a hand pointing it’s pointer finger out. That pin on the hand would rotate down when you press the action. That “finger” like pin would push the gear over. It’s located under the cap. Take the lid off and see if it’s still inside. If it’s worn down that might be the culprit.

I just bought a similar lighter, but I dont know how to change de wick
@HerrTweekCat
@HerrTweekCat Жыл бұрын
Usually a Zippo brand wick will fit but if you need a thicker wick you’ll need to pull it from another lighter that’s considered junk. Pull out the cotton from the bottom, pull out the wick. Then put the new one in, pack cotton around it as you lay the wick into a S shape inside the lighter. Once the cotton in packed in, add fluid and light. I can make a video if you want, just let me know.

I love the video! Very helpful. What solution did you use to clean the metal?
@HerrTweekCat
@HerrTweekCat 3 жыл бұрын
My solutions vary from lighter to lighter depending on what it’s made from and its corrosion level. On this lighter, if memory serves I first used a gentle mix of dish soap, very little soap, then a small mix of jewelry cleaner but it needed to be for non precious metals. Some of the components were also soaked and cleaned with WD40. You just need to be very careful on what you put on it and how it’s applied. Sometimes what’s good for one part of the lighter will harm another. Hope that helps.

I personally use alcohol (sanitizer) because its thick, and cleans then polish after.

@HerrTweekCat
@HerrTweekCat 3 жыл бұрын
If it’s the sprockets that rotate the flint wheel, you can usually pop them out of another junk lighter of the same or similar make. Sometimes you can find a “vintage lighter lot” sale on eBay pretty cheap. That’s what I’ve had to do. Also, there have been some lighters that I couldn’t fix 100%, so I’ve saved them for spare parts for other rebuilds.

So would it ruin the lighter if I use butane to fill it back up if it's a similar one to this? Or is it better to stick with ronson lighter fuel?
@HerrTweekCat
@HerrTweekCat 3 жыл бұрын
A lighter will only work with a lighter fuel or butane depending on the fuel storage chamber and how it’s designed. If you can open the fuel storage with a screwdriver it needs lighter fluid. It can be this brand or zippo or another similar brand. If the lighter has a special refill valve to add butane, you would need to match the right fitting to that specific valve or refill nipple. Look up the brand Blink to get an idea of what I mean, some of their cans come with several refill valves to match older lighters. Let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions. Best of luck After thought, also look up a brand called Newport Zero, theirs comes with valves to for butane.

@rafaeltorre1643

@@HerrTweekCat Newport zero! Glad I saw you recommend that as it has the best quality tips that you don’t have to tear off and solves almost all problems. So people don’t get confused they are called adapters or tips. Use plastic nozzle butane canisters for better seal. I rarely hear butane spray since I’ve found what works best!
