He used 4 different electric guitars in the rain, didn't lip sync his performance like MJ and others, not only played his music but others all in the rain. Was and still is #1 in the ratings of best Superbowl Halftime shows💜💜

He was such an amazing performer that you would never know he was doing this in the rain. This is why he was IMHO the GOAT. It was perfection! His vocals are so on point. He sounds just as good live as he does on studio recordings. This is the best halftime performance to date. The man had enormous talent. Genius… he’s a modern Mozart. Seriously.

For me personally this is hands down the best Superbowl halftime show ever! Great performance from one of the most talented artists of my generation. Magical night especially while Prince sings purple rain in the only Superbowl in history to be to be played in the rain. And to top it all off my hometown team the Indianapolis Colts won the game 🎉

The funny thing is he was upset it wasn't raining harder. They were afraid he wouldn't do the show because of the rain. When they told him. He laughed and said, "Cool, can you make it rain harder?" They were shocked. He was definitely one of a kind genius. " Forever, he will be the best.

There never was and never will be anyone like that man. He personified music. He played the audience as much as he played his guitars.

The Hohner Msd Cat guitar he plays hete at the beginning is one he used throughout his career, and is probably the guitar most Prince-heads most closely associate with him. Kerp.in mind, he is doing this performance in the rain, on a slick stage, wearing high heels, playing incredible guitar solos, and pulls off an all time great performance for the ages. The GOAT.

Yes, it was pouring out! It never rained at the Super Bowl up till this point. The show was almost canceled, nearly 5 inches of rain had fallen that morning. The forecast called for pouring rain straight through the next morning, they asked Prince are you still going to perform . His response was can you make it rain harder? The lightning was real that was not effects!

Your reaction to this was soooo enjoyable!! Especially since you’re a musician. It’s my understanding that the Strat he’s playing is an exact duplicate of the one his boyhood hero, Sonny Thompson, played. Sonny is an amazing musician in his own right and was a musical mentor to Prince. They’re both from Minneapolis. Sonny also played in Prince’s band, the New Power Generation. So, in a way, Prince was paying tribute to Sonny every time he played that Strat.

This is without question the Greatest Super Bowl Show Ever. Prince was told before going on stage that it was raining he said " Can you make it rain HARDER" Prince didn't do just his own songs which is outstanding. This was a LEGEND AND TRUE TALENTED PROFESSIONAL!!! Also a world class Guitarist. It is raining heavy yet it looks like the rain is missing Prince. This is an immortal performance!!!

Its not a Telecaster, its his first guitar, bought by his father from a thrift store for 10 bucks. Its actually a re-badged 1974 Hohner Madcat with a Fender sticker on the headstock. Its beyond priceless now.

The amazing thing is look at the audience. He crossed racial boundaries, black, white and in between. Talent knows no bounds. So great he got to feel that kind of appreciation before he passed.

The lighteningwas after effects. It wasn't raining it was pouring. Prince is wearing 6 inch heals, the twins wore 9 inch heels. Shelby who sang Ptouf Mary with him wore very high heels but she wasn't running around the stage like twins were. He broke so many guitars and got them stolen. I don't know how many he wen t though. He was asked if he wanted to cancel the show, he answered "can you make it rain harder"? Thank you very much for reaction.

This is one of the greatest live performances of ALL TIME! Stop trying to find your style of playing and allow the music and instrument to find it for you, allow the guitar to guide you ask it out loud with kindness and your heart to find it for you. I promise it works once we stop trying so hard God will bless us with our path Amen

There is no one with the ability to sing, dance, play guitar, watch out for the dancers in the pouring down rain. I was in Miami for the Super Bowl that year my college friend married a retired NFL football player. He had 2 tkts to game, but threw a private party to watch outta the rain. The city of Miami was lit.

Prince's original custom guitars, including the original white cloud, were by Dave Rusan from Minneapolis/Bloomington, MN. Later on, Andy Beech of Bellingham, Washington designed 31 guitars for the musician including later famous 'Cloud' and 'Symbol' guitars. Agree that Prince made music for grown folks. Michael Jackson was more popular with younger crowds from his heyday. Prince did have some exceptions, because that's what Prince does. He doesn't limit himself. So some songs like "Starfish and Coffee" for example make great songs for kids too.

As far as I’m concerned he was the greatest to ever do it, and this is the best halftime show of all time. Since you were so into the guitar, I’d like to recommend that you check out his performance of Guitar on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It’s a lot of fun. Actually, this year is the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain. I cannot believe it.

There was a documentary done on this show, and the guy in charge asked him if he wanted to just cancel the show, 100% understandable w/the weather and the risk concerns, not just b/c of the live guitar and rain, but the glass like surface, water and the heels he and the dancers were wearing. He was stressing out during the entire show, meanwhile Prince was out there just rocking and doing business.

Pick ups on the strat are EMG 85/SA ...active pickups..more akin to metal than anything else ..the guitar is from Fenders custom shop .

IMO hes the greatest musician ever and this was the greatest half-time performance. I remember it clearly because I'm a huge Bears fan and we bleeping lost to the Colts😢 You should check out Prince's earlier work first if you're new to Prince. Check out the official video of Controversy next. We'regoing back to 82. Its very funk/new wave/pop

I was in 7th grade at the time too, and I remember exactly where I was sitting when I was watching this live. Lol. My classmates knew I loved Prince, and they always made fun of me for it. And the day after this aired was no different…they made fun of him wrapping his hair and all that. It was definitely frustrating that nobody else seemed to recognize the greatness of the actual performance. 😂 My friend, April, was at the Super Bowl that year and was down by the stage for this performance. She was standing near a stagehand whose sole job was to hold a main power cord to make sure it didn’t get unplugged or fall into water on the ground since Prince insisted on playing live even though almost every Super Bowl performance is prerecorded and lip synced. A lot of performers require these huge productions to put on a show, and P was like, just get me a marching band, a sheet, and a spotlight, and I’ll bring the rest. 😂 The first guitar he plays here (the natural wood tone with the tortoise shell pick guard) isn’t actually a tele. It’s a Hohner Mad Cat, which he played growing up. You can buy the same model for like $300. The keyboardist, Morris Hayes, said in an interview that all of the equipment they played during this show was waterlogged and couldn’t be used again. The symbol guitar he used during Purple Rain is named Habibi, which means my love in Arabic. You might be able to find more information searching for it that way. Dave Rusan designed the original cloud guitar, but he did not design Habibi. That guitar was originally designed by a luthier in the UK and the ones Prince played were made by Andy Beech. 💜

Such a legend. Weird as hell sometimes, which added to his uniqueness. I watched an interview with a VJ who said she'd interviewed him once, and he showed up dressed in an outfit that resembled something a conservative female Muslim would wear, and he brought an interpreter with him. And every time she asked him a question (in English!), he would look at his interpreter, who would answer for him lol. In high school, Purple Rain had just come out, and I bought my girlfriend the tape for our 3-month anniversary. RIP Prince.

It’s actually not a Telecaster but a Hohner Madcat. He has used that, (probably not that specific one) since the beginning of his career until the end. I think it was kind of like an old reliable guitar for him. Here are some others that made guitars for Prince other than Dave Rusan: Jerry Auerswald made the original symbol guitar and the Model C guitar and Cleo bass for Prince. Andy Beech made 31 guitars for him including several symbol guitars. Schechter You should watch the story behind Prince’s Super Bowl performance. I grew up in the 70s/80s & I just think Prince is exponentially better than Michael Jackson. I liked the Jackson 5/Jacksons & Michael's Off the Wal Album, but since Prince's first album in late 70s, I didn't care much about MJ. Prince is so much more talented in so many ways. And don't let anyone fool you, Prince can dance his ass off, too. We know Prince's abilities w/20+ instruments, producing, writing all his stuff & hits for others, his creativity, skills & talent is GOAT level.
