prefer Paula's version, but wished they did it as a duet or had his background vocals think this would have been a HUGE hit as a single! Think of 90's Paula & Prince slinking around in a video---HOT AF!

I always thought Paula's version of U was a huge missed single opportunity for Paula. I love her version and I also love Prince's. I wish someone would do a mash up! I do prefer the way Paula ends the song.

I am reading these comments and I am reading so much hate on Paula....well I guess I am in the minority....I like her version and Prince's version for different reasons. I think Paula did good with this song and I wish it was released as a single. Spellbound had some gems on it and this was one of them.

After all these years, to hear this is so mind blowing! A complete highlight on Paula's Spellbound album, hopefully there will be a Prince 'Originals - Volume 2' so this can be on it. Thanks for uploading!

Better vocals on this version! Paula struggled with the key.

Ya i agree this sounds more better than paula version but this is a masculine version Paula abdul s version was also enjoyable and awesome because paula did a funky hot feminine version Let us dont compare the arts of male to female In grammy ama etc solo male artists songs are seperated at solo female artists songs So prince and paula s versions of this song are both incridible thank you

This is BETTER than Paula Abdul's version of course, it has more bite although, paula abdul used to really be nasty and bite-ish when she sang back in the 9à's (knocked out etc). The only thing that makes Paula's version better is that you can picture Paula dancing like mad on this (cf. yokohama live performance), Paula abdul's moves and choreographies are the best in the world and in fact they become part of a song, all her songs are so much better with her hand gestures, legs, arms, feet, etc... inspired by jazz and so many influences. Anyway, i'm so glad i came upon this original "demo" by Prince ... and i've been a fan of Prince and Paula since the 8à's and we are NOVEMBER 2018 OMGGG

" While specific recording dates for the released version are not known, initial tracking took place in October, 1987, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. It was sent to Paula Abdul at some point between 1988 and 1990, when she added her vocals at Studio Masters, Los Angeles, CA, USA; her vocals were produced by Peter Lord and V. Jeffrey Smith; who produced much of the album " - PrinceVault.com

It's from an earlier project called the Rebels which dates to his tour with Rick James. Jr was a punk track. He clearly wasn't satisfied with it as he had pulled it out for possible inclusion in the abandoned Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic which was to follow LoveSexy and then not included in Batman nor Graffiti Bridge. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKStg2SwmratsNk
@jasperhalco87111 ай бұрын
This would've worked well on the Graffiti Bridge album, sounds so much better with Prince singing than Paula Abdul's shrill off-key vocals. My only criticism is I wish he'd played a real distorted guitar for that riffing guitar loop instead of that awful synth-guitar sound

I'm going to have to agree. I really like Abdul but Prince was the best vocalist of all time and that's a tough act to follow; she really wasn't suited for such a complex song that demanded such a diverse range.
