I have a video idea for you, and the timing is just about right - fall application of a pre-emergent (Dimension/Dithiopyr and/or Barricade/Prodiamine) to prevent weeds that germinate in the fall, such as Poa Annua. I am about 100 miles north of you, and I just put down some Lesco fertilizer with Dimension. I've been using it in the spring to successfully prevent crab grass, but for the first time I applied it in the fall a week ago to see if I can't get rid of some troublesome fall-germinating weeds. There's lots of videos on this subject for warm season and transition area turf, but not much on cool season grasses. Keep up the good work.

I just had a 5 foot diameter stump removed from my front yard and I've got zilch experience in grass seed. I bought Scott's KBG at Menards and seeded the bare spot this past mid August. It's been a month now and the grass is coming out (it's about 1/2 to an inch now), it's a light green color. My existing grass is dark green. I'm wondering if KBG will get dark as it grows. Otherwise it's going to look like a light green patch. I live in the Rockford, IL area and I don't know what kind of grass I originally have, but it's a lot darker than KBG. If KGB doesn't get a little more darker as it grows, I might have to try a different kind of seed. Thank you for your interesting videos and information.

Great vid as usual George , Ron and you are my go to lawn experts for tips and info. I also like a KBG / PRG hybrid lawn as a cool season lawn person myself , I love KBG the appearance & color and the spreading aspect is a big plus. But KBG can be a bit delicate - often requires a lot of water , does not like the heat and disease can creep in if you lower your guard. Ntm the KBG germination rate is slow and it is typically late to come out of dormancy. I am in North NJ with typically brutal summers and i went from an all KBG lawn to a KBG / PRG hybrid lawn and seen many benefits since doing so. I like the blend , to me the varieties compliment each other in numerous ways. Through the summer the PRG's color and appearance tend to hold up better and the super quick germination is always a plus. At its peak KBG looks amazing but that peak is very hard to come by and maintain in my / your area , so i do like the benefits of mixing in the PRG. The blend / hybrid option at least for me works best , i would say i am at a 65 / 70 % KBG to a 30 / 35 % PRG as of now ; though as you said George the KBG will take over more and more as time goes on.

I’m in central NJ and have turf type tall fescue. I hate all the bare spots and always having the reseed. I was thinking of overseeding with KBG but wasn’t sure if it was a good idea or not.
@AlexBB778 ай бұрын
@@FixItWithMe theres a lot to take into account. TTTF tends to be a bit tougher / more resilient , more shade tolerant and often maintains a darker green (which is always a bonus, even though there are dark KBG cultivars as well). I like KBG because of the spreading aspect as to not always having to overseed to fill in bare spots. But it can be a bit delicate and a bit slower to come out of winter and summer dormancy. My Perennial Rye in the front lawn been nice and green and lush already so early in the season but my KBG areas still not quite there yet. Still some brownish spots in the more dominantly KBG areas. But soil temps still been pretty cold up here in Northern NJ. Also , have to keep in mind KBG spreads and TTTF doesn't so over time the KBG % in your lawn is going to likely keep increasing. So sort of no going back if you don't like it , unless you want to take drastic measures down the line. Me personally i like having a mix , the Perennial Rye is super quick to germinate and it has a slightly more shimmery / reflective look and blends nicely with the KBG. Nothing really stands out or clashes color or appearance wise. My backyard was mostly Perennial Rye and some TTTF , before i mixed KBG in and it just got tedious having to overseed so often. Since i included KBG back there , really don't have to overseed hardly at all back there anymore. I like to have some spreading grass in the mix to reduce the constant over-seeding. I am actually experimenting with some spreading Perennial Rye this season at some point. But in your case you have to consider a number of factors if you want to do it or not.
@FixItWithMe8 ай бұрын
@@AlexBB77 I just bought this house 2 years ago and had a major septic field repair. Therefore, I got TONS of weeds. I have been using Prodiamine and post emergent control. And I have overseeded the area, which is getting a lot better. I haves 2.5 acres of lawn to take care of, and it seems like when I get one area in control, another area just gets tons of weeds and bare spots. My soil also tends to stay soggy during the heavy rains we have been getting, so I thought KBG will help soak up some of that extra water in my yard. That’s why I wanted to somehow mix in KBG. I heard there’s rhyzomtic fescue and perrenial rye, but I heard it barely spreads. Nothing compared to the KBG. Does ur perrenial rye also turn brown in the summer with the KBG? Do u start seeding KBG in august? And thanks for responding to me!! :)
@AlexBB778 ай бұрын
@@FixItWithMe if its a hot and dry enough summer any cool season grass will turn brown. KBG tends to go dormant quicker and stay dormant longer than others but it bounces back. My Rye tends to be the first to green up out of the winter , stay green the longest into summer and stays green the longest into the winter as well. But that just my experience with it. And i agree out of the cool season spreading varieties nothing comes close to KBG's spreading ability. Though i am going to try a Barenbrug spreading Perennial Rye in a few spots this season just to see. In your case i would mix the KBG in , it will fill in , self repair , thicken up the turf so less weeds. And yes i tend to do any seeding in late August for the most part , KBG maybe a week or two earlier than i would with Rye because of the longer germination time with KBG. I don't even mess with Spring seeding anymore , i feel like the birds are more aggressive being after the seed in the Spring , the soil temps not warm enough until later Spring and then new grass has to deal with summer heat so young. Just not ideal with cool season varieties imo. 2.5 acres is a lot , i don't envy over-seeding or maintaining that. I have about 8000 sq ft combined front and back and thats enough for me. Just can't imagine that large an area and how expensive fertilizer , seeding and other chemicals would cost. Especially KBG with the long germination that could be challenging. Maybe do just thinner spots and where weeds tend to fill in first with the KBG and let it spread from there. Over time will get more and more KBG % as it spreads anyway.

I seeded my new lawn with kbg (midnight, bluebank, & mazama) and cannot believe how quickly it germinated and filled in. I saw initial germination on day 4, and today on day 18 it has filled in very well. There were a few big bare spots (that either I missed or were washed out), but every day I'm seeing more & more grass creeping into those areas. I may still throw down some extra seed, in hopes they will germinate before our first freeze (typically around Halloween). It was my first time seeding a lawn so I must have done something right! :) I believe the warmer sunny weather we've had, along with my hourly light watering has really helped it. Do you think I should apply my second starter fertilizer app at the end of week 3 or 4 (I used the Scott's starter + meso 21-22-4 at the full recommended rate, which should be right about 1 pound of nitrogen)? George excellent vid with so much great info. I feel like i followed a very similar path to you in terms of lawn renos. I did a big reno about 5 or 6 years ago and went all PRG and it was looking great but I wanted to change it up and liked the look and rhizome feature of the KBG so I went all KBG in the front yard. When it is thriving KBG looks great do not get me wrong but in my experience KBG is rather susceptible to heat / drought stress and disease at least in NJ's hot and humid summers. And in general i noticed with certain KBG varieties , Midnight in particular for me (despite other peoples' experiences with it) looked great but seems extra fragile for me ; especially suffering in the NJ summers. About 2 or 3 years ago I went with a hybrid KBG / PRG mix and tend to overseed with more and more pure PRG since which got it to about 60 % KBG and 40% PRG. To me it is a good mix , it blends well color and look wise and the PRG tends to hold up a bit better through the summers (especially the color & look) and is generally less maintenance , the fast germination from PRG is amazing as well. Ntm though some hate on PRG the quality varieties actually look really good , I used a Barenbrug version the last few seasons and it really has a reflective shimmering quality to it. To each their own but I do like a KBG / PRG hybrid lawn , think it works on many levels.

@@PrincessCutLawnCarerye holds up better through the summer in my experience , less prone to heat and drought stress and in general more disease / fungus resistant. Of course all cool season grasses struggle a bit in the summer but for me rye does better than KBG during that time. One downside for rye is the lack of rhizomes , so no spreading , and even though it blends well , the color i can never get quite as dark as the KBG (though not obviously noticeable). That is why i think the mix of the two in a hybrid lawn works really well. Plus with a fair bit of rye in the mix , you will get an earlier green up out of winter and from any summer dormancy issues.

Great informative video.. I had KBG while stationed in Ft. Lewis WA, it rained so much there but I still had to install sprinklers. So I know what you mean by KBG staying thirsty. Now I have Bermuda Grass here in GA, it’s a lot easier to maintain but not as fulfilling to look at.

So I live in Orland park, so not super far from you I believe and used duocide by the Andersons in June to prevent grubs and it didn’t work at all. My entire front lawn is completely destroyed. My question is if I plan to do a total renovation in spring do I just let the grubs finish there work or should I start applying grub killer to get rid of them now. I mean as of now atleast 50-60 percent of the lawn u can lift by hand easily. The roots are gone. Secondly I’m really considering turf type tall fescue. My kbg always looks terrible all summer and i don’t want to spend a small fortune every summer trying to keep it green. And Ryan knorr had a video showing how the tall fescue stays green all summer. What do u think?
@PrincessCutLawnCare3 жыл бұрын
Hey neighbor! Apply grub killer now and then grub preventer next season. If your not reel mowing than i think TTTF is hands down the best seed for our area. I rec checking out united seeds fescue as they have the top rated fescue seeds in the ntep trials

@@PrincessCutLawnCare one more quick question, and I appreciate the feedback. Do u think I should kill the rest of my lawn this fall so it’s ready to go in the spring for a total renovation? I’m just thinking that maybe easier to kill it now then later in spring right before the renovation, since it takes a little time for the grass killer to leave the soil .
@PrincessCutLawnCare3 жыл бұрын
i would not kill it now due to erosion also i would not do a complete renovation in the spring. do you have irrigation? you will be better off making your current grass the best it can be and then waiting until next fall to do a reno. If you do it in spring youll will be dissapointed
@djs1343 жыл бұрын
@@PrincessCutLawnCare yeah, that’s what’s annoying. Is I’m not ready this fall for a renovation. This grub damage took me really off guard . I was probably going to add irrigation at the same time. I guess I’m just in pannick mode. I’m a big planner in general so this massive grub damage is messing me all up. Don’t know if I should remove all the Damage which would involve removing atleast 1000sf of my lawn or just leaving it and having the lawn look like crap all next year till fall

I disagree that Kentucky blue grass seeds don’t have that shiny velvety look, the reason why most peoples grass do not look great is because they cut it too low, Kentucky grass bluegrass should be kept at a certain height during the hot summer climates like at 3 1/2 to 4 inches tall, that way the blades below the grass will keep the grass moist, when you cut your grass too low it will burn out quickly during hot periods in the summer it’s a no-brainer especially with Kentucky blue grass seeds, because this is a cool season grass
