Thank you for this reaction. Glad that you enjoyed it. Aberdeen is done in his upper vocal register. You heard some of his lower in Change on the Rise. There is no official music video for the song "Born In California" but he did do one acoustic video from covid quarantine in his home in Tennessee that I can recommend that he has published on his KZbin channel. An older collaboration that he did in layered acappella style demonstrates more of his full vocal range and classical and opera training and can be found on KZbin as Peter Hollens and Avi Kaplan Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair on Peter's channel. It was done for Peter's first L.P. It is a very old folk song from Scotland originally that made its way over to the United States in the Alleghany Mountain area near where Avi lives now. Avi Kaplan is from California but not the coast the central valley. He spent the 6 years he was with Pentatonix based in Los Angeles and was very uncomfortable with big city life. Aberdeen is a small town he used to visit. He had not ridden in years and paid for this scene the next day with sore muscles.

Something Avi has been doing lately is releasing alternative versions of some of his songs, typically stripped back, with acoustic guitar. He'll change registers, taking it up or down depending on the original, and experimenting with how he approaches the song. It's really quite interesting. In his alternative version of "Aberdeen", he lowers the key, sticks with just the guitar, and changes the ending chorus from whistling to vocal harmonies. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4CpXnRso6qVkNE

I love the layering Avi does in most of his songs - in this one, the mandolin that comes in and embellishes. While everything Avi has done is amazing, 3 of them I can initially recommend are (from before he left PTX, as Avriel & The Sequoias) "Quarter Past Four" and, from much more recently, "Full Moon" and "It Knows Me" (I suggest the studio, audio-only versions of those, for the richness and layering).

I think Avi may currently be the leading proponent of American folk music. I've heard that Northern Europe has a rich folk tradition as well (besides Polka, which I'm never drunk enough for). Has Eskobar done any such songs, as covers or originals? With your attraction to this song, would you consider it if not? Heck nothing limits you to just European stuff. Americana would be cool too, perhaps the old genre known as Western -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIjQZop7p9CZnLM ( _Streets of El Paso,_ Marty Robbins)

It's all about the tonality for me too. Not sure if I'm using the correct terminology. The natural sound of the voice. Avi Kaplan and Morissette do that for me subconsciously. On the other end of the spectrum are voices that sound like farm animals which I won't name but have a huge fanbase. I don't enjoy goats and sheep vocalizing it's just not for me.

@@dannytheswedishmusixian1513 no another acappella band, Homefree. Tim Foust and Avi are friendly and both live in Nashville now. They are the 2 big natural American bass singers. There is one more well known bass, Geoff Castelluci (although he claims he is a baritone singing bass) and his band is Voiceplay. Avi collaborated with Homefree for Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire it was arranged for 2 basses and they have fun with it. It was to sell their first L.P. after being on an American competition program the Sing-Off for acappella bands which they won as Pentatonix with Avi had won 2 years earlier.
