I’m not sure about the other foods, but, my husband and I have been consuming natto for 2 years now. I know it improved my husband’s health. It is hard to quantify his improvement because it got coupled with less stress when he started working from home. As for me, I definitely can tell the benefit because I was going through a five-year long process to “fix” my periodontal disease. In the 3rd year, I started eating natto and my hygenist could tell that there was significant reduction of bleeding of my gums. Also, I used to get cavities every year. Well due to covid I did not get any cleaning from the periodontist’s office for a year (my husband is high-risk & we decided to put some stuff on hold until we got vaccinated) and I did not see my regular dentist for 2 years to check for cavities. When I finally saw my regular dentist, they did not see any cavities. Natto also contains nattokinase, which is antithrombotic. It is also the highest food source for Vitamin K2, which activates proteins that move calcium away from soft tissues & deposits them to the bones. It is not my favorite food, but, I eat it everyday. I use kimchee to “mask” the natto. Also, I make natto with black soy beans, which actually tastes milder.

i have been taking probiotics (30 billion CFU) for a few years. they help me when i travel, i don't get diarrhea. i absorb food better, and have a peace of mind regarding my gut health, which is also known as the "second brain". i am 40, but i look late 20s. I think this is testament to probiotics, because it is the only supplement i have been taking consistently over the years, apart from Vit C and Omega 3.

I’m afraid to take anymore supplements. This girl, a guest in the show called “The Dr.s”, ended up with a liver transplant because of the supplements she was taking. I’m just going to up my vegetables intake. I blanched it and purée and drink my purée vegetables instead of eating it. I threw away all my supplements. I just eat in moderation and intermittent fast everyday sixteen hours in between. It made me lost 40 pounds and my system reset. My blood pressure went back to normal, my anxiety went away, my eye floaters gone, my varicose veins size of a raisins got smaller and I sleep deep at night. Good luck to all of us , we are always looking to prolong our lives and live healthy. There is nothing wrong with that. BLESS UP!

Probiotics are not the same and not all strains have good survivability getting to the intestinal tract. Studies are done comparing different products and found that very few actually meet the mark. (Yakult is not one of them) Suggestion: Steven should get a Serotonin test by an endocrinologist or neuroscientist. Of course, need to first perform viability study to make sure those particular probiotics are active. Certain studies do show that Serotonin levels do have significant increase after intake. But Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that cannot cross the blood brain barrier. (Unlike probiotics which can have so many different types, Serotonin is just one compound 5-HTP.) But its precursors can. Maybe he can also do a brain imaging scan.

@@NK_Khoo-Malaysian in research, labs will usually identify strains that are bile- and acid- tolerant. Otherwise there will not be any commercialisation value to the final product. Shall there be a need, there are some encapsulation technologies that can protect the product (ie. drug) before reaching the gut. Hence some pills are meant to be swallowed whole instead of chewing.

Adding on, many probiotic strains are not available in your regular kimchi or fermented food. Different strain exhibit various properties, L. plantarum helps with managing IBS symptoms, L rhamnosus GG normalises the gut flora and may reduce diarrhoea, while Bifidobacterium longum and breve might be linked to reduced obesity. These are just some examples. In fact, some doctors prescribe probiotics clinically alongside with treatment to improve recovery. So, having kimchi and other fermented food regularly too help maintain a healthy bowel, but they are not an all-rounder bacteria that does wonders.

The biggest caveat here is that it has been found that the gut bacteria in your poop are completely different from the gut bacteria in other parts of your gut. Dr Paul Mason talks about that. Testing your stool isn't going to tell you how your general gut is doing :) While this appears to be science based, there is no science yet. Only the very early beginnings. We simply have no idea what affect the gut biome really has.

It's very unrealistic how the experiment is being carried out, you take some fermented foods as part of your diet not everything probiotic, your ancestor made those fermented food for some reasons, either to preserve it longer or reduce certain toxin not good for your body, naturally and practically you don't take it for taste and don't need to take it all types but only take a small amount to feed your body some good gut bacteria, and do it gradually with body reaction is being observed over a period of time. Unfortunately, most people are trying fermented food with taste come first, e.g. Kombucha has been made popular and then after a load of sugar fruit juice added afterwards to attract people taste bud, losing the purpose of consuming fermented food, it's kinda a destroying act to what you original intent to achieve, which is, consume natural food to achieve greater health.

i once saw cartons of a fruit-flavoured sweet probiotic drinks left at the backlane of a supermart waiting for someone to bring them in - on a very hot day. You wonder how cold can it be - they will be back in the fridge later but i guess most of the live culture is no more alive.

One should focus on level of prebiotics as well... I.e the food the good microbes in guts actually enjoy eating. e.g onions.

ve been taking probioticst and from my experience there are health benefits but nothing beats eating better healthy food in general. If not backed by proper diet probiotics wont do much

Natto is an acquired taste and needs to be eaten after defrosting. Do not stir-fry it is going to just kill the good bacteria. One of the best way to start eating natto if you can't stand the taste is to eat it with Nori(Japanese seaweed) & rice.
