The cuts and the constant switch between very zoomed parts of the node tree make it very difficult to follow The fact that you keep changing "let's do this... or not, wait this would look better... no back to this." also add make it hard to follow you You explains why you use some nodes very well, but the rest of the tutorial is a bit of a patchwork, which is a shame because the end result is amazing Maybe if you could post a screenshot of the final node tree somewhere, because even a couple watch later, I'm still not sure I got everything plugged where it should, and I get nothing close to your own final result

Only one complaint ... the 14,000 times in the video where after an edit, 500 settings were changed and not a word was mentioned about it. Beyond that, what I appreciate most is the presentation. You're very well suited for making these kinds of videos. Some people have the right charisma for it and others don't. You're at the head of the class in that department. As far as technical content, the final result is the best I've seen yet. 6 stars out of 5!

If you are having trouble getting the same color that he is at 25:02 and are getting a regular white instead, he replaced the multiply node at the end of that section with a Vector Math node that is set to multiply off-screen.

For the mixing of the texture with the vector (9:16) I like to put the RGB output through a vector math node, subtract 0.5 from every value and then use "add" in the mixRGB node. This way the distortion happened evenly and not biassed to direction. probably doesn't matter in this example though.

The trick you use at 22:03 is a good idea, but if you use the Node Wrangler plugin (included in Blender, just enable it in settings), you can just Shift+Ctrl+Click on any node to isolate it like you did here. For nodes with multiple outputs, just keep Shit+Ctrl+Clicking on it to cycle through the outputs.

This was a great tutorial, that was far visually pleasing going through the entire process! My only criticism is that it was extremely chaotic to follow along because of the abrupt transitions with quite a few changes made without explanation. On the mix node mixing noise to the vectors, you should set it to linear light. When you mix in noise it moves vectors on average 0.5, the linear light operation fixes the problem. It didn't matter in this project but it might in the future.

Not to be a stickler, but since we are looking at galaxies from the outside, technically there shouldn't be stars in the background, as stars do not exist outside of galaxies. I guess the stars could be seen as really far-off galaxies. I think a good solution would be to randomize the galaxy colors with an object info node then add a particle system with the galaxies as the source. Despite the discrepancy, art if often about how something looks, not how realistic it is, so keep the stars if you feel like it. Or if you like to tick off astronomers.

But practically every galaxy has a dense black hole which emits all sorts of light and could be observed and mistaken from that (hypothetical) viewpoint, for a star.

CBailyFilm: If you create a new object and the option dialog that appears so you can set things like segments disappears cause you click on something else or an empty space you can always bring it back with F9. If you do any operations or other stuff its gone and will not come back. Just an FYI. :)

I take the exact values as You do while stop and go several times through Your Videos. I came to the conclusion that it is different as in Version 2.93.1 that I use I only get Bogus a Galaxie that looks like a Pancake. I will try and install an older version of Blender to proof it. Amazing. It should be possible to Twist that noise without messing with the UVMap, however it might require some tedious math work with nodes. I wish one could just enter a function or formula via python.

The point light doesn't work correctly for me and always just shines toward the view. Doesn't matter from which side I look at it, it stays completely black behind the light source. How can I solve this? You should also show when you change some of your nodes. There is always a cut and suddenly you have completely different nodes with different settings. This makes it hard to follow.

No doubt this man is great at making it up on the fly BUT - It would be nice to see a follow-up that is simplified - I am attempting to combine this with an instanced particle system...which in many ways seems easier, the loading times on this shader is quite annoying. Also since this is a flat plane, its not a truly 3d galaxy. But yeah implement K.I.S.S. - Keep it simple stupid, because I am sometimes really really stupid.

You added stars to the background.. but thats what you would see if you were viewing a planet not a galaxy, since galaxies are literally just stars.. its possible for them to exist but not be created outside of galaxies since the density is so low

Are you piping the colour ramp into a math node? I do it for the emission, but I keep it black and white - if you want to have colours in your ramp node and still use a math operation on them to increase the glow then use the Vector math Node. The math node only works with single floating point numbers, whereas the vector math node can do math on sets of 3 numbers (colors have Red, Green and Blue values in them). Just make a vector math node, set it to multiply and enter the value you want to multiply by into the 3 fields of the node. Or you can make a value node, enter the number you want to multiply with once and plug that into the bottom socket of the vector math node. Hope that helps!

The Emission Strenght is not appearing on principled BSDF I did it by: Color Ramp and Value to a MixRGB (Multiply) And then connected with emission.

Happened to me, however I fixed it. Look carefully you might have selected vertices, check if you see the orange glowing color on one of them. Diselect them, and rotate and scale it with middle mouse button. I had one vertices selected on the brim of the circle.

Around 12m30s you change the Blend mode to Alpha Hashed for transparency. I'm using Blender 2.93 and this didn't make it transparent. Is there another setting somewhere which needs to be changed for this to work? Please help, many thanks for the great video.

I figured it out, my mistake. I had connected the Alpha from the ColorRamp to the Alpha on the BSDF. It's supposed to be the Color to the Alpha. Crisis over! :)
