I have taken my car to the dealership (after having spent several thousand dollars on transmission, and engine upgrades, etc. but kept hearing a whining sound whenever I accelerated. Each time, I was told that it wasn't anything to worry about. This was about 4 months ago. Today, when I rolled down my window and turned on the AC, the car stalled in the middle of the street. I was able to crank it again. I called AAA, they came out and used some kind of apparatus to confirm that it is the alternator. If I had known that you existed, I would have been able to inform the dealership. How can mechanics at the dealership not know it was the alternator??? I was able to find a local mechanic who replaced it and gave me a 2-year warranty. Thanks a million for your help and I can now share your knowledge regarding the s/s of an alternator going bad. Be aware, newer model cars use the "smart charging system" controlled by the ecm.. a signal is sent from the battery current sensor, located on the negative terminal of the battery, to the ecm.. The ecm, then takes that information (voltage) and determines if the voltage regulator, on the alternator.. should or shouldn't be charging. Which means.. you don't see a steady 13.5 or 14 volts all the time.. Voltage varies from 12.6 volts to 16.5 volts. There is a mod u can do if the ecm isn't keeping your battery charged. These alternators have three wires, usually in a pigtail harness that connects to the alternator. One wire will read whatever voltage is passing through the battery while running.. The other two wires are from and to the ecm. If either of these wires is interrupted, the battery light will appear on your instrument cluster, and the regulator on the alternator will take over the charging responsibilities.. basically bypassing the ecm, and you'll see a more steady charge of around 14 volts.

Good video, but I would add couple of info bits: Never direct pressure wash to the alternator because the pulley end bearing is not sealed enough for that. The second is that when the alternator starts to fail, it also affects some fine electronics, so one can hear a whine from the radio or the ABS pressure pump starts to cycle at idle because the system thinks that the car has just been started. As the pump motor is a strong one, the problem gets worse fast. Some car tinkerers have also made the alternator seem bad by replacing the battery warning lamp with a led, as some alternators actually need that lamp to work properly. Some, like GM ones could not care less, but some do. Some modern alternators run always hot even when the bearings are OK, as they are now rated about three times more amps than the old, physically same sized ones; the modern cars need a lot of amps just to operate and the alternators are overloaded all the time. That is why they last so short time nowadays. In some alternators replacing the voltage regulator part that also has those spring loaded bits,"brushes", that collect the electricity from the spinning rotor and wear out,can very easily be done, and if the bearings are OK, the alternator can be fixed with just pocket money.

I totally agree with you buddy. We could not detect the problem of the alternator or battery by using just the multimeter. If some of the appliances of the car turn to 'dimmer' than before, that means the amperage lower than it should. About time to replace them.

I just got a replacement alternator on my Camry last month. I just started to drive it and I noticed that my chargers for USB cell phone does not work anymore. My lights inside my car do not light up, and they are not bright. My windows (just like he said) are not going up and down smooth and fast like before. And this baby cost me $150.00. So my guess is to take to another station and have it tested. The amps for me are to low.

Its worth mentioning that if the battery starts to fail it can kill the alternator by overworking it. So you may have to replace both at the same time

I remember when I had the beginning signs of an alternator failure on a 1 litre Toyota Yaris/Vitz/Echo it began to sound like somebody had dropped in a turbo under the hood. Had that 'woosh' kinda sound when going in and out of gears. Subtle but enough to raise a smile. Alternators are expensive parts but luckily for us can be had very cheaply used at breakers yards and online! Nice vid.

@@proclaimliberty2000 returning to this video 3+ years later as I've got a different car with what seems like an intermittent alternator issue! You're top of the lists and rightfully so. My car seems to be losing charge to the battery and then one by one things start turning off, then I get a faint battery light on the dash, abs warning light etc then it's ready to stall. If I give it revs it *seems* to get it back into shape - tonight I was miles from home doing delivery work when it started. Jumped it off a small battery pack I carry and after a while it seemed to be fine again, in fact I drove it for hours with no issues. I can hear a squeak from (I think) the aux belt though, which funnily enough I have booked in end of the week for checking and replacement. It squeaks a lot under load. I'm hoping it's just the belt slipping which is the issue rather than the alternator itself. We shall see! All the best to you and yours from across the pond in the UK.

Not everyone has a Craftsman 82141 DMM. One should always set the meter on the position corresponding to the aspect one wants to measure *BEFORE* connecting the test leads to the points being measured. Some meters have the resistance settings "on the way to" the DC volts settings on the rotary switch. Inadvertantly (even briefly) trying to measure resistance across the battery will result in a smoke show from the meter, which will now need to be repaired. Doing it your way is just bad practice.

That last bit about the alt whining because of bad bearings isn't entirely just bad bearing if a diode shorts inside the alternator one of the poles on the starter will make a whining sound and get hot and smoke as well.

If I've got a 13.xx volt reading on an alternator running with no accessory load, I'm just gonna plan on replacing it. Don't think I've ever encountered that situation where the alt didn't bite it soon after.

bobbofly be sure to check your battery as well. Check it in the morning after the vehicle has been sitting overnight. With the vehicle not running if the battery voltage is below 12.2 it should be replaced so that it does not cause premature wear to the alternator or starter.

I have a 1992 Honda Accord and the grounds for the battery and everything else were connected to the body using a self tapper.... This is not adequate enough especially for the main battery ground.... Please double check these, I've sanded down the grounds on all 4 of my vehicles and now my 2 Tahoe's sit at 14.7 Volts! My Honda Accord still has a bad alternator but will be fixed soon.

You didn't mention about an alternator overcharging. Just checked a 2012 Sonic with the 'battery' dashlight warning. At idle the car is putting out 15+ volts and at about 2000rpm it goes to over 16.5 volts. Seems like voltage regulator in the alternator is going/gone.

During cold winter the alternator on my sister's car started to whine very loud (still charged ok) and I was sure it was toast. Then my father sprayed some WD40 on it (not sure where, presumably near bearings) and alternator has been fine for about 3 years now and my sister drives a lot. Worth a shot before replacing it I'd say.

My 2000 volvo s70 had a battery drain problem. Let it sit for two days, everything was fine. Let it sit 3 days and go to start it and nothing. I checked my battery and alternator. Battery was fine. Alternator was putting out 13.4 volts. Suspiciously low. Turns out it had a bad diode which was pulling juice from the battery. Got it replaced and we’re now up to 13.9 volts. Let it sit 2 weeks and it starts right up.

Two days ago I was stopped at a red traffic light while driving my year 2000 BMW E38. Suddenly, the oil light came on and I lost amlost all power. The steering wheel was so stiff and I almost hit the car in front because the brakes were stiff too. I was wresttlig with the steering wheel trying to control the car. Luckily enough, I did manage to pull over without blocking traffic. I was sure that I did not have enough oil for some reason but when I checked the oil it seemed OK and there were no leaks under the car. When the rescue guy arrived he asked if my battery was OK. I told him it should be fine since I replaced it about 3 months back. Anyway he just tested it and found that it was not charging at all. I was 16 miles from home. He swapped my battery for a new one in his car and put mine to charge in his van. Then he followed me home and the car drove fine. At home he put my battery back on and by that time if had a bit of charge but it was still not charging properly. We are buying a new alternator. It's amazing how much havoc a weak battery can cause in a car. I was wondering why a dead battery would trigger an oil warning light. Turns out that the oil pressure sensor can't do its job when there is not enough power in the engine, so the warning light comes on and the car goes into limp mode.

Hi. Thanks for this informative video. Recently I experienced a bad alternator in my car. One morning suddenly the battery indicator pops up and when I ran the wiper blades the swept very slowly. Hey people, when it does come time to replace your old alternator, do what my old Dad drummed into me, years ago, find a reputable starter/alternator auto-electrical rebuilding business, preferably local, and trade your old alternator in for their rebuilt one with usually a descent 30/60/90 warranty. DON’T rely on a supposedly “REBUILT “ trade in from NAPA , PEPBOYS, AUTOZONE, or other national auto-parts franchises. Old Dad & I Opened a couple of THEM up, only to find a nice fresh paint job on the outside, but worn staters and brushes on the inside! So...bottom line is...rebuilt does NOT necessarily mean REALLY REBUILT!!

@Dimitri Borozny Well it depends on how many miles you put on them, but I bought an Autozone Endurance Gold alternator for my 89 GT Mustang about 15 years ago, and is still going strong, no issues at all...

Over here we go to wreckers and get a decent one for peanuts. They often check out if the parts are good at wreckers here, otherwise they go straight to scrap metal.

I had 3 occurrences when my 2008 Nissan Xterra lost electrical power. The first time I noticed was when I got back to the parking and couldn't start it. Completely nothing on dashboard even the SECURITY LOCK light ( car blinking icon) was not blinking which was the norm . Then TWICE it happened as soon as I came to park at my destination. Then it either comes back by itself or it comes back by some manipulation in the battery. Finally I got STALLED in traffic. I stopped on a red light then the gas pedal was NON-responsive. The engine was still running . The following indicator lights were illuminated: BRAKE, BATTERY, OIL, ENGINE SERVICE . When the police came to help me bring the car to the median "island" to keep me out from traffic, the POWER STEERING was out. The brake still worked but feels a little hard. What do you think is the problem? The auto-shop gave me a probable bill of $2000 (2 thousand dollars). I want to hear your probable diagnosis for comparison.

Another useful way to tell if alternator problems are in your future is... at idle, turn on your dome light and hit the directionals. If the dome light goes from bright to dim with the directionals, your alt's internal voltage regulator is working towards failure.

@@fargeeks It's a good bet the alternator's internal voltage regulator is the problem. I get AutoZone house brand alternator with lifetime guarantee

What could be the issue of a alternator with a higher voltage such as around 15 volts?

I was driving to a job today when I noticed the battery light come on then off, suddenly the a/c, indicators,wippers, radio suddenly stopped working. It had blown the fusible link. I have never had this happen before.
