I'm an amateur electronic music producer who is trying to get better/more efficient and I have no issue focusing on producing as a whole. My biggest issues related to my ADHD have been 1. Getting started working on music 2. Stopping working on music when it's late and I'm tired and therefore less productive, but I'm having too much fun 3. Finding myself just playing the track over and over without actually getting stuff done because I'm stoked on it and want to keep jamming out 4. Staying on task within the context of a session - while it's not hard for me to focus on producing once I've started, it is hard to have a well structured workflow because I constantly find myself wanting to adjust small things in the project even if it doesn't make sense at that time (such as trying to fine tune a synth sound or drum sample when I'm just trying to arrange the song structure) 5. Not taking breaks when I feel stuck on what to do next with a track - I actually find some of my best ideas come when I've exported the incomplete track and am just listening to it while doing something else, things will stand out for me like "oh I wish it did this instead!"

What I can definitely recommend in terms of producing music - build your workflow so that everything is at arm's length. Not only the instruments. I have my templates set up in Reaper so I won't spend extra 5 minutes setting everything up. I have a MIDI keyboard always on the table always turned on and ready to go. I have my guitars to the left of my table and a cable is always plugged into the interface. I used to have my mic on the stand right behind the guitar stand. But it took me extra 5 minutes to take it off and place comfortably so I could record. Instead I bought a table boom arm. Now my mic is always plugged in and I only need to turn the phantom power on and I'm ready to go. Those little things make it easier to start producing instead of not doing it because you have to do all those preps which may cause frustration and kill the producing mood you were in before. The less potential struggles you have - the more likely you'll get down to work

@@AdamSliger For me it's like my brain is just a room of other copies of me all having different conversations. Imagine the movie Inside Out...but with like 200 people in the control room instead of like 5. I cope with it by thinking out loud *a lot*. Once I pinpoint the particularly important though, the added stimulus helps me reject everything else happening in my brain. Quite a bit, actually. Problem is maintaining it. Eventually I'll stop doing it, not notice I've stopped, and start walking around in circles because I forgot what I was about to do, then keep gravitating toward the next thing that sticks out to me

When you said about “not confusing ADHD with a superpower nonsense” I subscribed. I say to people “If you think a superpower is being chronically disorganised, time blind, not completing tasks (especially if you get interrupted, in which case it’ll take a month to return to it when all the work you put into the task was a waste of time), and having to keep up with life whilst simultaneously having to catch up on the complete destruction that having ADHD (which is the most misleading name apart from the Disorder bit which is spot on)…and having a bedroom full of mouldy plates and the inability to keep a room you’ve just tidied straight for no longer than a week (and that’s a good week) then your idea of a superhero is f***ed up.” 🤣. Before I continue watching…I’m going to do an invoice for last nights gig whilst it’s on my mind…thanks for the reminder.

So whenever I'm focusing I tend to hum or sing a song. I don't even notice myself doing it a lot of times but it keeps me focused on my task and only one other thing versus my mind wondering and trying to do or think about 40 other things. I also appreciate you not using ADHD as a crutch and painting yourself as a victim or claiming. It's a superpower. I have described it as being such in the past, however ,that was before. I really noticed how many things were happening as a result that weren't so great. Meditation was extremely difficult for me to get started with and I'm not consistent but when I have been consistent with it it has greatly reduced the symptoms of my ADHD as well as being mindful of what I'm eating. Thanks for posting this. It's nice to know that there are other people also navigating ( and successfully )the same challenging terrain as yourself. Respect 👊🏼

Great video and something I've struggled with as a Producer, Mixer, etc. for years and didn't know I had for well over 30 years in the biz, until a few months back when I got diagnosed. As a person with ADD, I've been struggling with even the thought that my music ability and the ability to focus on music objectively at the level I do, could be a career and earn money. Awesome of you to put this out there! Because it is very important to be more transparent about it I think. I agree with most of what you said, but because I not only have ADHD, but also "mild" ASD, then I not only have attention defitity, but also sensory disturbances (or whatever it's called in english). So sure, if the background noises are more uniform, and not too "dynamic" with sudden outbursts, then I usually don't mind. But it most certainly doesn't make it easier for me to focus 😅 On the contrary, as soon as it's gone, then I'll notice and feel relieved. But if I'm already up in the mornings, then the sound of life going on all around me actually makes me more energetic and productive. The best decision I did in relation to music production, is to just self release it on Bandcamp without any promotion work or other practical stuff, except for mastering, which I'll just get done online for free. It's definetly not the most optimal way for getting any income at all. But at least I feel significantly more motivated to get any music done, which is the most important thing for me. Then I can always "upgrade" my way of releasing music along the way, when I gradually get more and more used to the different steps. Also, not making music into something that i HAVE to do, but as something that I MAY do (if I feel like it). Because nobody, not even myself gets to decide what I shall or shall not do 😏 But I'm very curious about what you'd recommend for someone with ADHD to do in order to maybe be able to get a steady income from music production? 😁😅

I've noticed a marked increase in productivity when I have other people around.. even just going into a VR space like immersed can help me feel like I'm with people who are all working. My tendency to want to have snacks/drinks with me at my desk makes a lot more sense, but this one is dangerous because it leads me to overeat and gain weight. I'm going to share this video w/ people that I can't seem to explain myself to. It's really a perfect window into the way we try to navigate. Thank you!

I literally had the ‘drop A’ guitar conversation with Myself last week. Turns out an older 6 string guitar of mine had C standard tuning that I had completely forgot about, but it did the job. Bank account safe (for now).

I have hot corners on mac set up to be a blank screen or screen saver or I can quickly listen without visuals and tasks popping out at me while looking through the session. I think relating to artists is one of the best things about ND and producing. Not sure why but almost every musician I've recorded has some kind of neurodivergence. We can relate more and keep each other in check more I think. Get the artist to make a checklist of tasks and try to break individual tasks into timeframes so multi day sessions aren't a rush at the end and you have hard limits on how long it takes you to decide on a mic placement for a guitar cab.

Surpricingly I did really relate much even tho I have ADHD. I do music as a hobby and my main problem is that if I get a musical idea or a track going somewhere, if I don't finish it in the same sitting, very often I can get back to the mood I had and the song feel bland after enough repetitions of the song. I just struggle to work on older stuff and then the song end up dying. Cool video, I liked the multi screen analogy

Wow that works thank you so much. I took my other laptop and placed it on movies or just any crap with dramatization. using my Bluetooth ear buds. then i went to my other laptop and started my music production producing beats and songs. In the past years I havent gotten anything accomplished. However I can make up a song on the spot about anything or the current situation. Plus I can sing in 5 octaves well. No training but I can. Problem ive never gotten anything accomplished with these talents. I kept starting then doing this then doing that but none of it was related to my talents. I mean I can just hear music that has feeling and come up with the lyrics without even thinking. Yet everything turns to shit because i cant finish anything. But when I tried what you said I had lazer focus. I have the monitor headphones over the ear buds with the ear buds turned down. While I make a beat or practice a part to play. AND WHAT YOU SUGGESTED WORKED! OH SHIT!!!! Something told me to listen to everything you were teaching and sharing. And I DID! So thankful to you thank youvery very much! SUBSCRIBED FOR LIFE!!!!!
