Vocal fry is life changing if you use too much falsetto and tend to try to yell notes that are too tight. I can't really tell if it adds compression or takes it away, but fry is absolutely amazing as a warm up. I just sang 10 songs last night in public on no sleep and a couple cups of coffee, and the fry got my voice relaxed and free, and has never sounded stronger or more full. If you have a habit of hanging out in falsetto too often, or worse, whistle register, and you find that trying to pull your whistle registered down into your speaking range has caused your voice to be tightened up like a winch, then vocal fry will undo all of that and make your voice voice feel like a long, tall tube of tone. A few years ago, I went to an ENT and we could see on the monitor that my arytenoids were not closing all the way. It produced a strangled sound, and I was also choking on liquids because the airway wanted to stay open when esophagus was jammed shut via a high larynx. After only a few days of using fry, I no longer choke on liquids because the fry has closed the gap that was happening when I would try to swallow, and now the esophagus opens when the airway closes. I can't believe that another ENT once told me to avoid vocal fry. That led to a preoccupation with falsetto, and I got very unbalanced vocally and functionally. Now it all works again! Fry is awesome.

Eric, after watching all four videos in this lesson, I have started to practise everyday. After about 3 days, I have noticed a HUGE difference in my singing. Major improvement. I could not be happier. The tone is great and my voice is much more powerful. My range still needs work and a notice some strain when I get a little high, but I will continue to practise everyday. Thanks so much! :)

Remember guys, ALWAYS listen to your body. If you feel pain or discomfort with ANYTHING, then stop; you are doing it INCORRECTLY. Healthy technique practice feels good and relaxing to the voice. Despite the harshness of the fry sound itself, the feeling should be EFFORTLESS. This is not the pressured/strained Kim Kardashian vocal fry. To the contrary, this is quite gentle (think "feather light"). As most of you have noted, there should be an immediate improvement in the clarity and freedom of your voice. Some of you have even noticed that healthily produced vocal fry can soothe a sore throat; feelings of the throat being soothed, "loose", or relaxed are excellent indications that you're headed in the right direction. So... If you've tried repeatedly but still feel uncertain, then stop doing it completely. And then set up a session with a certified AApproach instructor, to figure out where you might be going wrong - www.AApproach.com

As a tenor singing mainly opera and classical I used too much of my vocal folds. I knew about vocal fry before discovering Eric but it turned my voice around. It made me really understand just how lightly the folds need to come together to produce sound. I often discovered that it often feels like nothing. It's what I return to when working on a new piece that is challenging. What was also very important for me was doing the exercises without expectation. I spent years getting frustrated because I was not making progress. The light approach has been my saviour. I have my own teacher but I'm always in great admiration of Eric. I've directed several amateur singers to his site knowing how safe his approach is. I needed to SHARE!

Eric Arsenault is the ONLY online vocal training professional my primary vocal coach is okay with me following. After 2 diagnoses of muscle tension dysphonia in 2008 and again in 2017 (Bad singing techniques/stress/cobblestoned voice box from acid reflux) and 7 yrs unable to sing because my vocal folds wouldn’t touch, leaving an airy and inaudible sound, a year and a half of therapy at a voice Institute and additional sessions with a speech therapist, not to mention years of discouragement, his 4-pt warmup helps me tremendously after I do my daily therapeutic vocal exercises! I recommend him to all my professional friends and singers at my church. Thx Eric! You’re the best to provide these videos to help singers and people who use their voices for a living at no cost. Treatment for my condition is $150 per session and insurance doesn’t cover it! So this has been a tremendous help in my recovery journey. After four years of using these videos for my daily and weekly warm-ups I just had to say thank you! I am definitely on the road to recovery and even back in studio. 😭😭😭🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾♥️♥️♥️ Luv n Blessings!

Thank you for your videos! I practised 15 min a day this past week and am feeling and singing with much more range and strength! I can't even believe it because I've experienced straining and pain in my throat usually by the second verse whenever I sing. Now all that straining is gone and I'm hearing this different but better voice come out! My range changed too - I'm hitting the high notes with much more ease and with more practice I feel like I can go even higher!! I am doing relaxing techniques and doing vocal fry and yah yah along with lip rolls - for like just 5 minutes each and this is just amazing! Thank you so much for teaching me. XOXO

I just started them today for the first time in years, and I'll give you some feed back to how my vocals feel by birthday in 2 weeks. Already, from a these few exercises, I feel my voice loose up quite a bit! So, I look forward to more practices and improvements. Great Tutorial!

However, I often brighten my tone when teaching, since many beginner singers hear the pitches more clearly and distinctly that way. Voice classification is ALSO dependent upon where you "bridge" or transition. Unlike a true tenor, I begin to feel a significant transition as early as Bb below middle C (the exact pitches vary, based on vowel sound & intensity/volume of the tone).

I wouldn't recommend talking with a fry all the time. It can actually really mess up your vocal chords if you talk like that all the time.

Thank you. Yesterday I had my first performance in a while, since i'm recovering from badly straining my voice. I feel like your 4-part-series really played a big part in me feeling good about how I did.
