A very insightful conversation and learnt much from Prof Chin with his analysis of Malaysia in general and Sabah and Sarawak in particular. Indeed Prof Chin has often been sourced for comments by main media in Singapore, but strangely much less from Malaysia. If a much small land mass like Timor Lester with much fewer resources can exist as a independent country, there is no reason why the territories cannot prosper if governed well. Both territories can easily rise to become an important power and country or countries in Southeast Asia. Neighbouring Brunei is a showcase. People of Sabah and Sarawak are no longer lazy to think like their ancestors and let others decide their fate as Prof Chin reiterated. There are many talented and capable people there - one even become a Foreign Minister of Australia! Sabah and Sarawak's independence is long overdue.

Much better if Sarawak operated as a seperate country as it had done in the past. Let's approach this subject objectively from economic perspective. I don't necessarily think Federal government intentionally not focusing on East Malaysia for economic development. First, population of Sabah/Sarawak only represents 20% with population spread around 60% of total Malaysia landmass. Naturally, 80% of population over 40% landmass will take precedence. It's logical approach and nothing to do with race, etc. It's happening in north and south Italy, west and east Germany, Seoul and rest of South Korea, many more. Now I get why Sarawak/Sabah want their fair share of natural resources up to manage this on their own. But why? These resources are finite and I would rather demand the equivalent money (if were to take over resources) and invest in other long term industry and sector with human capital development that could last longer than managing these depleted resources. This way, both Semenanjung and Sarawak/Sabah could prosper together rather than cannibalizing each other. Just my 2 cents.
@arjay2973Ай бұрын
I disagree. The fed are not interested in developing both but continue to plunder their natural resources to benefit the west m.

Go study how the petronas has the right to exploite sabah and Sarawak resources and how much they gave back. Study why Sarawak kept quiet for this long. Study 1976 sabah air gag nomad crash. Then you know.
@FredBaker-l3qАй бұрын
Again, I asked you to think objectively from economic perspective. We can't expect petronas to return all profit back for states even for federal govt. They need to reinvest into the business, building new plants, new ventures to create more value. In fact this is exactly the economic multipliers (often intangible in the eyes of public) that benefit local with quality job opportunities, local businesses (supply chain, construction, etc). So yes, what tangible money returned back to the states might be low, but we need to acknowledge as well intangible values created to the locals. Now my message is simple, demand (tangible monetary value) what you think is right that viable for both sides, then build strategy to diversify states' economy to secure long term future (logistic hub, renewable energy, AI, etc) anything other than already in place o&g ecosystem. The current strategy to replace petronas with petros is low hanging fruit strategy, hence I said cannibalizing each other.
@aljy-u2zАй бұрын
@@FredBaker-l3q Consider the situation where only Selangor and KL are highly developed, while the other states remain underdeveloped. Johor and Penang have their own advantages, making them somewhat wealthier, but is this fair to the rest? For instance, East Malaysia didn’t even have a proper cancer treatment center until this year, forcing people to spend money to fly to West Malaysia for care. The government's financial and education policies, along with its deep ties between religion and politics, create concerns. States wouldn't object if the government made sound decisions, but are they really doing anything beneficial? Look at education-there’s still debate over whether to use Bahasa Malaysia. Halal certification. Prioritizing islam. Sarawak has got tired of these and only now they have to bargaining power to build up the infrastructures. If not now then when?
@FredBaker-l3qАй бұрын
Politics aside (religion, language etc though you can't remove potential stupidity of this equation), I asked again to look into this from economic angle only. KL/selangor forms the largest conurbation with 9 million of population over the land area of 2500km square, hence it's only logical all economic activities and wealth concentrated in this area. It's simply not viable to pour money equally in Sarawak when her population is merely 3 million people spread accross 125,500km square or Sabah with 3.5 million people / 75,000km square. This problem is not unique to Malaysia. I shared earlier example of concentrated economic wealth in Seoul over the rest of region in South Korea, my point even South Korea has land size equivalent to Semenanjung with higher population 52 million, they still have problem all economic wealth concentrated in Seoul. It is just much easier to build economic wealth when people exist near each other in concentrated area, public transport will be much efficient and everthing else will be much efficient. That's why Singapore is so successful since everything can be managed within 700km square area!

Yes. Sarawak is huge in term of land area, but the population is small ( 2.5 million; 0.5 million migrant workers from Indonesia). It will require the same amount of money to develope. The GDP contribution of both S&S is only 15%. If you are running a company, would you invest equally in the two division, or more in the division with more revenue and profits. Oil and gas only contribute less than 10% of both Penisular and S&S GDP. Majority of GDP contribution for Malaysia is service and manufacturing. With the current announcements of FDI investment in data centres amd electronincs manufacturing 100 billions USD will come to West Malaysia because of its safe and strategic location. No foreign country woud invest in S&S due conflicting claim from China, Pinoy and Indon. The area will be battle zone when China US war erupts - it is not worth defending. Another weaknes for S&S to attract investment is immigration rule. While people from S&S can at any time come and stay and work in Peninsular, the same is not accorded for West Malaysia to stay and work in S&S. It require long process to stay there. To migrate there - don’t ever dream. It is easier for pinoy and Indon than West Malasian.

The first thing that Anwar did after becoming PM was to win over the people of Sabah and Sarawak to make up for the lack of Malay support. I see no reason why Sabah and Sarawak would pick PN over PH as they are well aware of the 'problem' of PAS's politics. I have a different opinion from James wrt the need for Anwar to win Malay support at the expense of non-Malay support although I agree with him on the need for the Anwar government to develop the economy so that the Malays feels the economic benefit in a growing economy. PAS's performance in the last GE is not a true measure of its strength because PN had almost unlimited funds, giving them full confidence of winning the GE, yet they lost even when they were the sitting government prior to the GE. Now that the funds are basically "cut off" it's doubtful they could perform as well as they did without the power of being the government.

Yeah. Many uneducated Malays just cannot distinguish between ethnicity and religion. They really think "masuk Islam" means "masuk Melayu" , conveniently ignoring the fact that there are Indian, Chinese, Arab, Turk, European, Persian and black African Muslims. Malay is not even a race, Malay is an ethnicity. Caucasian , Mongoloid, Africanoid, Austronesian, those are races. Most Malays are Austronesian just like Javanese, Filipinos, Thais , Cambodians and many other Pacific Islander groups. While Chinese are Mongoloid as are Japanese, Koreans , Mongols and Native Americans. Indians and most people of South Asian origin are technically Caucasians, they are made of subgroups of Caucasian called Indo-Aryans and Dravidians.

S and S were not independent states at the time of formation of Malaysia. Both were colonies of Britain, and SG was not fully independent because its internal security and foreign policies were controlled by Britain. All three were hustled into Malaysia because the West(UK and US) regarded the Chinese diaspora as potential of not actual communists. Thus they have to be put into Malaysia where they would be controlled by Malays. SG was smart enough to get out and see what it is today. S and S were completely ignorant of their status and future and ended up being colonies of Putrajaya. It is no secret that the wealth of S and S is responsible for the unimaginable wealth of the Malays. After 60 years, things have come to a boil and nationalist stirrings are happening in S and S. As James Chin correctly pointed out, S and S can become uncontrollable from KL and their separation is even a probability. The next GE is crucial. A Sarawakian may even be the next PM.

Telling the truth is NOT instigating. Stop pretending to be a non abdooo Chinese. You should learn the truth that even Peninsular Malaya can be revoked by the British as the British only agreed to grant conditional independence to peninsula malaya as a secular non Islamic country of multi religion, multi racial, multi cultural, multi language country.

Sarawak, Sabah, Singapore and Malaya form form a Malaysia. Before Singapore kick out from form. Nama of Malaysia not only on shoulder of Malaya or Semenanjung Tanah Melayu.

The Malaysia Day was only introduced by Anwar & Team during Pakatan Rakyat time. It was first declared by Selangor, Pulau Penang and after the following PRU Najib/BN declared it as nation holiday. Even the Pan Borneo highway it is also initiated by Anwar in Pakatan Rakyat manifesto and they won only 5 states. Then Najib/BN again used the agenda in BN's manifesto the following PRU too. Being Muslim don't worry about PAS they won't be able to rule by themselves.
